the Free Hypnosis Social Network
Last year we put out our first hypnosis census. It was very brief, but gave a quick insight into what is happening in the field of hypnosis.
The results were great, and the conversations it started were, I think, very valuable. The overwhelming response, though, was that you wanted more questions and more information. We kept our questions pretty focused on two issues: Training and Income. We did this because they are so easy to measure, and we wanted the census to be easy for you to take.
Based on the feedback, we want to make the 2012 Hypnosis Census more complete. I'd love to find out what questions you guys are curious about. What kind of anonymous questions should we ask? What do you wish you knew about the industry? What do you wish you knew when you got started?
This thread is a brainstorming session. I hope that people will post questions and ideas that can be researched first and discussed further after the data is collected.
Looking forward to your responses,
Scott

Permalink Reply by James Hazlerig - HypnosisAustin on January 12, 2012 at 2:46pm I would love to have an idea of what kind of different techniques people use. Do most hypnotists stick to a single approach, or do they vary it? How many use rapid inductions in the office? How many read scripts verbatim, work from sketchy notes, or improvise on the spot?
Scott:
Before you get into questions why not ask for broad categoies.
Demographics. Business Methodology. It will be easier to focus questions if there is a direction

Permalink Reply by Donald Pelles on January 12, 2012 at 3:06pm I'd like to know how people manage their practice: make appointments, handle intakes and intake forms, keep client records, follow up with clients, manage referrals, requests for referrals, and thank yous for referrals. Do you send out periodic or seasonal greetings? Do you send out a newsletter? How do you build and maintain your email lists?
Permalink Reply by Lena Prokopenko on January 12, 2012 at 4:13pm Since I just started my hypnotherapy education, I'd like to know what education other people have, where they got it, how long they trained to be hypnotherapists, how many courses/workshops they took and which ones were most helpful.
What people are trained in. For example:
Check which of the following you are trained in and use in your practice:
_ NLP
_ Regression
_ Parts Therapy
_ Life Coaching
_ Past Life Regression
_ Life Between Lives (by any name)
_ EFT
_ Gastric Bypass Hypnosis
_ Other
etc
I agree with Bob Brown that segregating the census into broad categories first would make it easier to formulate better questions and better questions lead to more productive answers.
When I was right out of training I did not know that most hypnotherapists practice part time or that many, maybe most, people who get trained end up failing at building a full time practice. Had I known that I'm not sure I would have ever have developed a full time practice. So, sometimes, what you don't know can be as valuable as what you do know. After 20 years and a few hundred CEU hours each year there are still practice areas I could improve upon. How do other people who practice full time balance promotions (new client acquisition) with seeing clients? I get busy with an over flow of clients and do not take time to promote myself. How do others structure their sessions? What are other people's favorite go-to techniques? What are their most successful tips on attracting new clients? Does more education correlate with greater success rates? What are other people's success rates with their clients? How do they judge "success?" There are many things I'm curious about how other people do this business/job.
Remember to ask questions that looks at now, one year and 5 years. i.e. Are you certified... planing to get certified.
Permalink Reply by Lisa on January 12, 2012 at 6:44pm Hi Scott,
I would like to know what percentage of hypnotists and hypnotherapists have themselves been clients/subjects. What percentage use hypnosis/trance/meditation etc with themselves. Id like to know how many feel they have never experienced trance or hypnosis themselves. If they include live video conferencing in their practice and what percentage it is compared to their live face to face sessions. I'd like to know if they are planning on getting more training in the next 6 months or year. Do they practice alone or with others in related or same field.
gentle day,
Lisa

Leading on from Suzan's points, one of the questions I'd like to know is:
Once qualified, what are the CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programmes that you as a hypnotherapist would most like to undertake? Even if you have previously undertaken them which ones were the most valuable to you?
Maybe give a list of categories as suggestions - eg:
- How to Build a Successful Practice
- Day-to-day Practice Management
- Search Engine Optimisation (Optimization for you US guys!)
- Marketing Strategies
- Working with Children
- Corporate Performance Development
- Sport Motivation and Performance
- Motivation and Performance for Students
- Advanced Goal Setting and Motivation Techniques
- Advanced Induction Techniques
- Advanced Smoking Cessation
- Advanced Weight Control
- Advanced Approaches and Techniques for Phobias
- Advanced Approaches and Techniques for OCD
- Advanced Approaches and Techniques for IBS
- Advanced Approaches and Techniques for Trauma (PTSD)
etc etc, plus any others people can think to include
This could potentially show a pattern of shortfalls in initial training courses, which I accept can't always cover everything in fine detail and would also give trainers an indication for providing appropriate ongoing CPD courses.
We all need education and training, even on a continuing basis. I'd like to think that the profession could be best equipped to provide training that is relevant and required.

I am not at all surprised that hypnotists are lacking in business and marketing skills. Many health care professions never get even one business class. Your Hypnothoughts.com Webcasts in 2011 went along way in addressing this concern and getting out high quality business education tailored to hypnotists. Just got Craig Eubanks new webcast list - well done, spot on. End of discussion. Thanks again. Dave
Permalink Reply by Kathryn Beck on January 13, 2012 at 12:02pm I've learned from conducting surveys in the past that you need to be very concrete sequential. Having questions about methodology is going to be difficult to collate. If we are looking for averages among practitioners, then we need questions that have concrete answers that one can easily tabulate. For example, What state do you practice in? This question provides a certain amount of concrete answers. (But of course it might be better to ask country, then state if in the US).
I agree with others, you really need to decide what you want to gain from doing a census. Once you have a concrete idea, then it is much easier to come up with questions.
I think the questions last year were great, and should be on this years too. I would like to know the breakdown of male and female hypnotists.
I'm glad you are putting this together. I think it is a great way to learn about how we are all doing in this profession.

Annual income

Packaged Services vs. Ala Carte Services
How many hours scheduled in a week for admin
How many hours spent a week (or month) in professional networking
How much their entire family weighs
Solo business or have an office admin
How often they refer to health care professionals
Hours spent a year doing charity/donation services
Hours spent a month interacting with their local hypnosis community
