I had a discussion with a fellow hypnotherapist friend about rapid inductions, the sort you see the likes of Derren Brown do on TV where he seemingly puts someone under deep trance with just the shake of the hand. Another example he did was having a portrait of himself depicted as the devil painted on a fence with a hole in it, members of the public where curiously drawn to look through the hole after which they walked off, but one of these people upon peering through the hole immediately dropped to the ground in a trance. What I want to know is this, do these rapid inductions require priming before the show giving the person suggestions, or is it possible to hypnotise someone by these rapid techniques with no prior preparation? and if so can anyone do this with training or is it a knack/art that only a few can do?
Great questions...
Yes rapid inductions are real and possible. John Cerbone and I even did a video teaching Speed-Trance, and yes anone can learn. Search on youtube for speedtrance or speed-trance and you willl find a lot of people who have used our techniques and posted demonstrations of what they have done. And other forms of rapid and instant inductions are quite possible.
That being said, I have little doubt that what is demonstrated on television by a variety of performers, is not always as it appears in reality. That would include set-up, possibly confederates, and certainly a great deal of editing. TV is for entertainment, that is the primary goal of the producers, actors and participants, and editors. So while speedtrance is quite possible, I think the presentation of similar methods on TV is how they want you to percieve reality, rather than reality itself.
Absolutily! I am still studying hypnosis, so at the moment the speed trance is before me. But Richard has 100% hit the nail on the head. You cant always believe what you see on TV as TV is there for entertainment. Though I have seen these speed trances performed in life and it is amazing.
As someone who has worked with Speed-Trance Inductions and uses them all the time, yes, under the right conditions, as Lee Darrow posted on this board someplace, Speed kills. . . Audiences - in other words, people are blown away.
Richard and I shot the Speed-Trance video and there are clips on YouTube, I even put them on my personal page here for review. See the one where I drop a student in our class, initially, yeah, going slowly, I was demonstrating, LOL
I hosted a show this past Friday in New Jersey, and dropped a Freshman girl out in less than a second ice cold, freaking out the audience, staff and the Principal, Vice-Principal, etc. One wide-eyed parent came up to me afterwards and asked me, "Does the goverment know you can do this?: I told him I wasn't sure I wanted them to know, LOL.
TV, is another story. Some years back I dropped 2 interns Speed-Trance wise on live TV, Fox's Good Day Philadelphia, FOX 29. I was clocked at around 2 seconds and 2.5 seconds, OK, I was taking my time, it was live TV and these 2 young women were nervous, as the Anchors were supposed to be my volunteers and they chickened out.
The lone male Anchor was so freaked out, he took me out to breakfast and told me he didn't feel I understood why he was so freaked out. He went on to tell me TV is all retakes and cuts, camera tricks, etc. For me to do what I did going out LIVE with a 2 second delay, in front of 5 black robotically controlled cameras, he felt, was nothing short of a miracle.
A well known TV Magician on an episode, caught an arrow flying past his hand some years back. On the out-takes and bloopers show, we later learned it took over 200 tries to do that.
So yes, some of what's out there are pre-Hypnotized people, and sometimes possibly actors. But if you ever see me Trancing someone super-fast, and it's just a second or so, shoulders to knees, it will be real and what you'll see is really what you'll get. ;-D
I believe it's about being convincing & congruent (and modelling a bit) when explaining what's going to happen, then delivering it with that same conviction, expecting it to work.
For me, the whole point about rapids is that they're rapid, and don't need a whole load of set-up.
Hi Craig...
Yes I understand about rapid induction that all hypnotherpists are trained to do, but what I am talking about here is the super rapid induction that I and others hear about where by you meet someone for the first time and simply by shaking their hands you can put them under, is this a myth? or is it possible.
Join the HypnosisGurus group on this board. John and I have taught many people on this board (and elsewhere) how to do this. We also have a lot of clips posted in the video section from our last Las Vegas class. And we are teaching speedtrance again in Manchester UK and San Antonio, TX this winter. So not only is it possible, it is easily learned.
ok, what your talking about is an instant or shock induction.
yes, it can be done..i have performed it many times on the street and stage.
shaking a persons hand and going into hypnosis is called a pattern interupt.
there are many ways to do this, but this is the most popular one (having many variations).
so a basic recap- rapid inductions are 4-5 mins max,
instant inductions are just seconds.
hope that helps ?
Craig:
I agree completely, but VERY few hypnotists do rapid inductions, and almost none of them do the super rapid inductions. Every time I speak to a group of hypnotists I take a poll to see what type of induction they use. My very unscientific poll shows that 90% of all hypnotists use a fractional/progressive relaxation induction. The reason? PR is safe. There is no testing involved and so long as the subject is polite and keeps her eyes closed, the hypnotist can delude himself that he has her in hypnosis. But then, I'm just preaching to the choir with you. :-)
Another point. I most often do not test people I'm going to Hypnotize, though I know a great many of us are trained to do that.
In a show enviornment, if you get somone running up onto a stage, from the 10th or 12th row, you are likely not going to know how they did anyway. So for me, and your milage might vary, any inductions, most especially Speed Inductions, stand alone if your technique is strong, solid, or fluid as needed and adaptive.
Part of this is developing skills and some of it has to do with projecting intent and desired outcomes, and then stepping into those results.
