Hi, I am back again, with another question. I have ventured out into the world of hypnotism and had my first session yesterday. I had a couple of sessions before the first session to go over the issues that I want to address, to try to get to the core.
What I experienced was what many people experience in their first session. I was aware of everything and didn't really feel like anything happened, only that when I was told to open my eyes, I felt a little strange like I was still somewhat sedated. What I am wondering... is that when I came home, for hours later I felt this same spaciness. Like I was still mildly sedated, like things were going on around me, I was aware of things but everything was a little 'off". I had a discussion with my husband over an issue that has been bothering me and I felt so calm, surprisingly calm. Almost as if there was a calmness buzzing inside of me that is similar to something that would be similar to taking a sleeping pill and then trying to have a conversation. Is this normal for a first time hypnosis experience? I am not alarmed by it, it wasn't anything negative, only surprised. It is mostly gone today only I still sense something a little different. Thanks for any feedback on this. I hope this isn't too silly a question to ask. Rose

Hello Rose,

One of the great side effects of being in trance is the loss of all the day-to-day tension, stress and anxiety that each of us normally has stored somewhere inside of us. In order to relax completely enough to experience a trance you have to release all of these negative pressures. The experience you had after your session was what life feels like when we live free of all of these daily negative pressures. For someone who may have had alot of stress and anxiety, the loss of these things can make you feel almost "high". Even if the hypnotist does not give specific suggestions of wellbeing you will still feel better because of the complete state of relaxation achieved through hypnosis.

Since I first started entering the trance state a complete transformation has come over my character. I am calm in the face of things that in my past would have set me off. I have patience to an extent I never thought possible. Things that at one time in my past would have loaded me with stress and anxiety simply don't anymore, but even if they do I release it all with my next trance. In essence, the positive side of my being has become stronger through my experiences with trance states.

Hope this helps...

Oh, and the only silly question is the one you don't ask, and therefore never receive enlightenment for.
Anyone else care to comment on this?

I am but the student, you are the master...
Chuck said it quite well. I think one reason I'm a trance-junkie is that it just feels so good and the feeling stays with you.

When I was in training I did a research project in which my volunteers listened to a pre-record hypnosis session every day for a month. At the end, one of them said that even though the suggestions had nothing to do with being calm, he had experienced a great easing of anxiety and was thus better able to perform at work.

Welcome to the wonderful world of feeling better!

P.S. The first time I underwent hypnosis, I was aware the whole time. Now I often black out for large parts of it. You'll go deeper with practice.
This is normal for all sessions not just your first. It is not a state where you have LSD trips or go unconscious, you her and remember everything butwake up feeling as if you have had a full night's slepp.

Thank you for replying. I love your response! It was very encouraging and meaningful . On average, I do not think of myself as being under stress, my life is fairly good but...at times I have "moments". I think I have fallen into the scenerio that when everything is fine, I'm fine but when something happens to upset the boat, I want to jump and this is why I wanted to try hypnotism. I have been doing whatever I can (reading, meditating, visualizing, etc) to be more patient, loving, etc. I have been pealing at the layers to get to the underlying issues but I couldn't seem to reach them by myself. So this is why I am trying the hypnotism.
From what you say, about my experience with the first session, then I can't wait to go through the next sessions.
Thanks again for your responce.Rose
Thank you for responding. From what you are saying, I get the feeling that this is something I have to do everyday for an extended amount of time. Would you be able to tell me how long does it take to be able to notice any permanent effect?
I felt great for a day or two after my first session but then I got really upset over something and then a couple of days later, something else happened where I got really upset (and felt terrible about getting so upset) but my level of being upset actually seemed to escalate. It's almost as if I resent being taken out of my state of calmness. I get the feeling that I have been tormented, conflicted over old behavior and thought patterns and new suggestions that I can't quite put into effect because they are not strong enough.
Is this a possibility?
Thanks you so much for your input,
Rose
Thank you, I will mention this experience at my next session. I will be more "educated" for my next session and will now know what to expect. I enjoyed the calmness. It is amazing that you can experience this without being drug induced. I think there is so much in our world that we have not tapped into.
Thank you
Rose--I find it is helpful and very pleasant to practice hypnosis several times a week. I don't manage an hour-long session every day, but that would be ideal. Some hypnotists teach their clients a quick self-hypnosis technique to be used many times each day.

Suggestions get stronger the more they are repeated, so you'll definitely see more results if you repeat and reinforce your session. How much varies from person to person. I've worked with some who made major changes in a single session, and others who took ongoing reinforcement over a period of time.

Also, don't forget to bring conscious effort into your change as well. You didn't surrender willpower in order to enter hypnosis, and you still have it as a tool to use. Fortunately, your willpower shouldn't have to work as hard with your unconscious mind working with it to make the change.

Best of luck,

James
Thanks again!
Thank you Chuck,
I must say I have been feeling a little more "perky" since my last session. I can't quite put my finger on what it is but I just feel like I am in a better mood. I still feel a little iffy over some things, like I am still doubting myself but all in all things this week have been good.
With my second session I didn't feel spacy. I remembered everything and I came home feeling like nothing had really happened other than I had been really relaxed but I do feel more upbeat, etc. I hope this is working!

Thank you again,
Rose
