HI, I am very new to all this and would be very greatful of any help and advice. I have recently been on an NLP practicioners course and would eventually love to become a hypnotherapist, however the NLP course has left me more confused than when I started. I would love some advice on which is the best path to follow for therapy, NLP or more traditional hypnosis. Any advice on material I can learn from book/dvd's etc, what is the best structure for a therapy session, courses/qualifications I would need to do, what insurance and things I would need to do to get started. I know I am basically asking to know everything from start to finish but I don't know which way to turn and the NLP course has realy set of a spark in me to learn about all this to eventually be able to help people and make a difference in their lives. Many thanks in advance for any replies. Dale.

Hi Dale,

It is OK to be confused in the beginning, it will come apart as soon as you become more familiar and ready, as to which path you should take first, in my opinion, NLP is a great tool, and I don't have it yet, I am a Certified Hypnotherapist and I am doing well, when I could take NLP while back, I wasn't ready and there for waited until now, almost 6 years later...Now, I want to add NLP into my practice, I hear allot of good things about NLP.

How long are you taking the NLP, are you done or what stage are you at?
Where are you located?

Now, you should go with what ever is easy for you to start, since you are already in NLP, I think you should be focused with NLP and if time permit, you can take hypnotherapy as well.

As to Insurance and all that plus hypnotherapy, you can check HMI where I was graduated from... you can also find information about insurance in their website.
feel free to contact me with any other questions.

Hi Dale,
I hope in telling you my story, you find something of value.

NLP courses do not teach therapy.
Although NLP helps you achieve your learned therapy.
NLP can stand alone without hypnosis and still achieve successful positive changes.
NLP combined with hypnosis, or even better yet, NLP combined with hypnotherapy works miracles.
Hypnosis and hypnotherapy both use hypnosis but there are a lot more instructions and understandings required for the therapy part.

Hypnotherapy is not as simple as: “you will close your eyes and when you open them all your problems will be solved”……..and yet if you are very good as a hypnotherapist with NLP, you may understand how to make simple be really powerful.

I too was bit by the NLP bug in the beginning, not even knowing nor ever hearing of NLP and yet I still knew I needed to know what the hypnotist that was speaking, knew.

I think I was attracted to the NLP because it could do what I had been trying to do, with ease. Before any training, not knowing anything about hypnosis or NLP, I simply tried to help people who had a hard time making decisions, who couldn’t figure things out, who were stuck, who needed hope or even a nudge, just because for some reason I had a more of an objective view than they did.

I took a year course of hypnotherapy, not because my goal was to become a hypnotherapist, but because I wanted to understand this phenomenon of how we function. It amazes me everyday.
As I was taking my training, NLP was something I was looking forward to learning when I was ready, and waiting was they right choice for me, I am still digesting it. I still look forward to the master practitioner course and the master time line therapy course and I have a ton of NLP books, Ericksonian books, and related material that I read everyday because it makes so much damn sense to me. We are such powerful beings without an operator’s manual and most people are happy to stay stuck.

My life is constantly changing for the better, and people around me also find themselves changing. No one “tries” around me, they either do or they don’t. No one “can’t” anything around me, they either don’t want to or don’t know how to, when they ask how I am, some of them already know and say so, and to some I say, “I’m wonderful,” and when that puzzled look on their face appears, I say why not, it’s a choice, I chose the opposite for a long time, didn’t know I had a choice, some I tell that in the beginning I thought I was faking it til I made it, but now I understand that it’s the thought that creates it….and there is no more faking it. I know with imagery I can remember any joyous time if I want and with NLP I can see, hear or feel the images or symbols that are associated to the things I love. But really, just knowing all of this makes me happy.

I didn’t have a goal, I had a direction, and there was no turning back and there is no way to get in my way…..I have a dream because I now know that a goal has a date of completion on it, so I have a dream that I will practice part time, then retire from my day job and either continue part time or full time….my ideas of retirement never included doing nothing, it includes doing what I love.

My advice is to seek out hypnotherapy training in your area, I don’t recognize where you are from, from your profile, but I don’t think it’s southern California and the links on Doreen’s comment would be a good place to start gathering information.

I don’t know what you want…..but I think you are headed in the right direction.

Enjoy
Steve
Hi Dale. Hypnotherapy gets the NLP you have learned and makes it 100 times more effective by putting the words into someone's subconscious mind. For instance I can tell positive words to some one with low self esteem 1000 times and they will never believe me. If you say these words once to their subconscious, they will believe them and instantly begin to help themselves.
Hi Dale sorry to hear you are feeling this way.Why limit yourself to traditional hypnosis or NLP. There are some fantastic trainers out there, you will find many on HypnoThoughts there must be a training discussion on here.
Richard Bandlers new book Get the Life You Want is fantastic, I strongly recommend it, great for the beginner to as no NLP jargon, simple straight forward book that we can all follow .These are strategies that make dramatic changes in people's lives. A great introduction to how NLP can be used for those who might be interested in further study and thirdly it is a great refresher book for those who have gone through practitioner training. Reading this book will hopefully let all you have learnt fall into place
Hi there Dale.

I know I'm only young but, I'm eager to learn and love to help new people.

It's a shame you feel this way, but I'm sure you will find so much help on Hypnothoughts, i know there is so many trainers on here one being my mum Gerry which is brill at NLP another being Johnathan Royal but there are so many others.
Well I have learnt so much from a guy called Richard Bandler who seems to follow the Ericksonian method, he's amazing but i don't see why you should limit yourself to just one style.

Im sure in you will start finding t so much easier and creating your own style.

Take Care Chloe-Marie. x
