Several weeks ago I posted a discussion concerning Hypnotists on stage frightening certain people and hurting the profession of Hypnotherapy by in some ways making a mockery of a powerful healing tool. I was amazed at some of the responses I received as quite a number of "Professionals" seemed very defensive and all I did was throw out a topic. What's going on, and why the defensiveness? It's the same as a surgeon playing with body parts in a way.

Respectfully,

About time someone ELSE noticed what harm stage hypnotists do to therapists! Every day I have to go through the same rigmarole with new clients that I am not going to make them cluck like a chicken. Stage hypnotists have destroyed peoples trust in the therapeutic benefits that can be derived from hypnotherapy. If stage hypnotists could also be seen to apply their knowledge to healing and just perhaps use the stagey stuff for fun on the side we could all benefit from increased public trust..
Thank you Art, I was quite taken aback with all of the defensive remarks to this discussion. I too must make clear exactly how Hypnosis is able to help people by doing low cost intros where people can "safely" learn the benefits of this way of bypassing limitations.

Art:
I see myself as a hypnotist. I prefer to work with clients one on one.
That being said I have no problem with those of us that engage in stage hypnosis.
I believe you are comparing apples to oranges.
Granted that stage hypnosis is entertainment and some may be in better taste than others. That “same rigmarole with new clients” as you put it, would remain as long as clients have questions about the process we call hypnotherapy. The stereotype of clucking like a chicken provides an opportunity to allay your client’s fears.
I believe that we all owe a debt to the stage hypnosis of years past because they are part of the foundation on which modern hypnotherapy is built.
