Hey Red Crow-
Look under the "Discussions" tab at the top. In that drop down menu is the option for "Chat Room."

The mini chat room on the right side of every page is the same thing, so anything you write in the main chat room will be displayed to the entire site. Once you are in a public conversation with someone you can move into a private discussion, although sometimes people don't see the request if they aren't actively communicating with you already.

Cool. There used to be a separate button on the top, but it "Disappeared" now I know where it went.

Also, for the OP, if you look on the right side of the page, just below the box with your settings and stuff, is a small window for the ongoing chat. (Its the same chat room as the main chat, but just in a much smaller view).
