I have a close relative that has recently suffered from bouts of nausea. She has been hospitalized, EGD, MRI, & Ultrasound have been done. The only finding was a "cyst" in her stomach. The GI Doc has drained the cyst and she has had no real other side effects, other than continuing nausea. She's getting to the point she won't eat, (other than a couple of bites of ice cream) and is afraid to try as "everything I eat comes right back up".. Has anyone had any experience with nausea? I would think this is also a problem with "Chemo" patients.. Ant ideas or results for relief? Thanks, Paul

I work with cancer patients and yes nausea is often one of the side effects from chemo and because it is a direct result of the treatment, I use relaxation, breathing techniques, self-hypnosis and direct suggestion etc.

These same things could be used with your relative but it might be worth knowing exactly when this started, has she ever felt this way before? What happen before she started to get this nausea? I suppose what I am saying is could this be an emotional issue as opposed to a medical one? Are you involved in her recovery/treatment, if so perhaps you could try and tease out some of the answers whilst teaching her self-hypnosis etc?

I hope this is useful? I do have a script I think it maybe on my PC , I am using my laptop to write this if you want a copy let me know and I will try and dig it out for you?

On a practical note peppermint tea or a ginger infusion are also good for calming the tummy!!

A couple of thoughts:

Although not the same as nausea, i have worked with a number of client s with motion sickness, and perhaps the same approach could be used here. Just as with motion sickness it may be that the body is simply out of balance. I use hypnosis to suggest that the client go into their control room in their body / mind, and much like the volume control on a stereo, turn the motion sickness / nausea down, until finally they have turned it all the way off, and the body can reset itself.

Nausea is often connected with anxiety. Given the seriousness of the extent of the problem, I would agree that it may well be an emotional issue. I would consider using parts therapy and/or time line therapy.

I frequently use the control room visualization with a separate control for nausea. Have them turn the dial up and down during the hypnosis session so they can feel in control after the session. Visualize healing the stomach. Explain to her that the stomach lining has new cells every 7 days, so she needs to practice visualizing the healing. I always explain the true connection of the mind to the body as this increases the belief system which will increase the effectiveness of the visualization process. Our thoughts, quite simply, make for chemical signals and reactions in the body.

Thanks everyone for the tips!.. And yes, I'm afraid a lot of this is triggered by anxiety. It's tough to get her calm and to cooperate when she has been an "anxious" person most of her life. She has gone back in hospital and they have found a little GI bleeding, so more tests are going now.. We have tried some ginger-ale.. And she tried a couple of peppermint candies... So far, I will wait until Dr. knows more and feel I can help.
Hi Glynes...
I could certainly use any script ideas if you can share. If needed, you can email to psutton35475@aim.com.. There's a general reply to all down below, but I'm waiting for further tests to make sure what we are dealing with here. The anxiety is certainly an issue (emotional). I want to make sure the MD is satisfied that he has found all the problems before I offer to do much. I'm not real sure she will be receptive to even "self-hypnosis" but have been making suggestions as to how well "ginger" helps some people, and suggested she sip on some cool ginger-ale. This did help some, but other findings are generating further medical treatment and tests. I do apprecate any ideas & help.
