Hey Everyone

I have recently run into a situation and would love the advice of the hypnothoughts family. A possible client has come to me with panic attacks. She calls it a fear of driving alone, but her old doctor in Atlanta labeled her. She has had them for 10 years and has finally decided to try another route, which for hypnotist is usually the last resort. :)

Well I told her I would require a medical referral from her doctor, but since she is no longer living in atlanta and has just moved to Columbus she doesn't have one. She hasn't been under the care of one either for the last few years.

So me being new to the medical referral I told her to seek out a new doctor or get in touch with the old one in Atlanta. Well the one in Atlanta told her they couldn't give me a referral without seeing her again which would require her to drive 2 hours just to get checked out. So she decided to seek out a new local doctor, but the response she got was very odd. Everyone of the doctors kept telling her they can't give referrals unless it's for insurance purposes? Not sure what this means.

They asked her what exactly I needed from them. I thought I just needed a referral, but they wanted to know did I just need them to sign off that they approve hypnosis for her or that they don't see why hypnosis would be a problem. I guess I wasn't wording it write. I talked to a few hypnotist and they said I need a good medical referral form that I can just fax over that explains everything to them. So, in this case would my possible client have to get rechecked out and get test run again? how would all of this work?

So I guess my questions are what exactly do I say to the doctors so I can get my referral or what should my referral request form say. Would anyone be willing to share with me their referral form so I can get a idea and create my own? I'm not very good with that type of stuff.

If the doctor doesn't sign off does this mean I can't work with the client? Does she have to pay for getting re checked out? Columbus Georgia isn't a really open town when it comes to hypnosis, yet their is a market for it. i really want to build a good relationship with many of the doctors. I would love some input and advice on this situation and if anyone can help me correct my mistake this would be great.

If you are interesting in sharing your referral form please send me a PM. Thank you and look forward to hearing your advice from everyone.

Youre welcome to copy it.
I have a book that walks you through getting medical referrals and it contains all the forms I use both for a release to treat Iwhich Is what you need) and a prescription form for those who want to file medical insurance. It's $35 and you can order it off my website at www.tranceworkers.com under the section Products for Professionals. It's called How To Get Medical Referrals. Not only do you get the forms but it tells you how to build a full time business and keep your calendar filled all from medical referrals---without expensive advertising costs.

Thanks for the links to the forms and Melissa are you from Ala? If so, I'm located in Columbus Georgia. Howdy Neighbor!! As soon as I get paid I will check your book out. Do you still have hypnosis meetings and if so how far are you from Columbus?
Yes, we do have hypnosis meetings. I think we are 3 hours, maybe more from Columbus. I'd love to have you but, geez, that's a long commute, especially since we usually have wine with our meetings (for medicinal purposes only). I'm going to try to hold a Sat. meeting sometime in early April. That way we can all get together without having to worry about commutes and late night driving, etc. That would be fun.
Darn, 3 hours away. Keep me up to date on the Sat meeting in April. I'll see if I can make it :)
I suppose you would need a medical referral if you are planning on collecting insurance reimbursement - but - what if she just pays cash?

If you are not a licensed mental health professional or other state certified medical professional - you will not be treating her for a mental health or medical condition - because that would technically fall outside of your practice domain in most states - but instead you would be teaching her essentially vocational / life self-hypnosis skills for handling situations that make her nervous or uncomfortable - as opposed to treating a clinical diagnosis of panic attack or generalized anxiety like a psychologist or counselor would... Right?

Do you have to have a medical referral to help people quit smoking or increase self-confidence or stop biting their nails?

If not, could you just treat this case like those above - do a detailed assessment - find out what bothers her when - develop appropriate suggestive scripts - and have her pay cash for the session.... ?

I know it may appear to be a matter of semantics - and I would certainly not want to encourage you to practice in ways that are against your state's rules (which I am unfamiliar with) - but to me, this just seems like a possible easy solution.
