I am currently an RN practicing in the state of Michigan. I make approximately $60 grand a year, barring overtime and shift differential. I know it's a personal financial thing, but honestly, I'm wondering if I could at least match my income if I choose to go into hypnotherapy? I am sincerely interested and I feel like I have helped patients inadvertently, doing "hand-on" healing - which I now consider is a form of hypnotherapy? I love to help people and my job as RN is very rewarding. What is everyone's take on this? I am not interested in making money with out TRUELY assisting folks? Honestly, I'm getting very tired of working so many weekends and holidays. If anyone could assist with hospice care sort of issues, I would be so gratefull (sp?) thanks so much and God bless you all in your personal and professional practices.

Dear ShantiShanti...I hit $100,000 in my private hypnotherapy practice in 1996. My income stayed between $100,000-$138,000 a year until I closed my practice in May of 2007. I worked part time, made a great living and helped to make the world a better place. I highly recommend it!
All my best, Zoilita
Anyone with a little marketing savvy, a professional presentation, professional office, and professional manor of communication should be able to hit 6 figures in hypnotherapy with ease. I would imagine that an RN would have a serious edge. The nice thing about hypnosis is people WANT to by hypnotized, they WILL pay out-of-pocket, and they will refere to you. We have a DVD and workbook for marketing private practice at our website that would be useful to you. www.SubliminalScience.com (and we are an approved provider of hypnosis CE hours for nurses).
I agree with Zoilita. Go for it!
Hi Richard -

Thank you for your reply. I did check out your website, I'm sure there is $$ to be made with teaching/instruction as well, another thing to consider, another option for professionals, though I'm not much into teaching myself at this point, in any profession. I'm sort of burned out on hospital-based nursing after almost 20 years, but not even near ready to retire yet.

I do understand the importance of advertising/marketing as well as networking. I think to get one's name out in front of the general public, then, as you said the word of mouth advertising/referral is important. I'm glad to hear that you'd think an RN would have an edge - I like to think that nurses are highly trusted as a profession by the general public. I can tell you, the vast majority of RN's, I'd completely trust as a patient/client.

I'll certainly consider your DVD and workbook when the time comes, and it may not be in the VERY distant future - thank you for the recommendation and your kind reply.

Thanks so much for your reply. I've read a few of your comments on other threads and do value your recommendation!

ShantiShanti....I have actually run four different private practices in two countries and three different states. All of them have been highly successful. I am not as much in to marketing as most of the folks on the site. Of course, I do agree that marketing is important, but I have been raising kids most of my adult life and never had much money to invest in it. So I built my practices through referrals. I loved my work and never worked more than 22-25 hrs of client service per week. Let me know if there is anything that I can do to help and support you.
Blessings to you, Zoilita
Thank you Zoilita, You're so nice to offer me help - I'm very happy I found this group, what a wealth of experience and knowledge! Hearing from the "been there, done that" folks is very encouraging.

Sounds like you have moved around quite a bit. I suppose once you had set up one practice, the following ones were not as difficult.

I'm still raising kids, one left in the nest here. He is another reason why I'd like to be able to stop working so many holidays and weekends and still make ends meet. Not looking to get rich, I am looking for better quality of life for myself - working 12 hour midnights is just not getting it.

Thanks again and blessings to you as well!

ShantiShanti,

You didn't say where in MI you live but I was discussing this very subject with a coworker (I am a RN), she just recieved her MSN and wants to work in a holistic setting. She suggested I look into Ann Arbor Hospice. Get hired in as a RN and work your other skills in. Massage would be a good compliment to healing touch/reiki and hypnosis.

I know Henry Ford has a holistic branch, called complementary care and I think Providence in Novi also has complementary medicine. A RN might have an edge setting up hypnosis in a hospital setting.

Another suggestion might be to work part time as a float pool nurse. We make more per hour (no health insurance) and I basically dictate my hours. I work 2 days a week, one weekend day a month and one holiday a year(in the hospital). I made a decent chunk of change but short of the amount you stated. This type of job would allow you to transition if money is your concern and for me reduced my stress level.

The infinity institute of MI and/or the IMDHA has some good sources of setting up a business and has a mentoring program. Good Luck and follow your dreams. Michele
When starting a new business, though, be sure that you have enough money set aside to keep your bills paid for at least ONE YEAR. Also, make sure that you are aware of and follow all of the legal requirements regarding seting up the practice and are aware of and follow the rules regarding the use of "restricted language" in any advertising, promotional materials and even in discussing your practice in conversation so that you don't cross the legal lines with regards to the laws about practicing either medicine or psychology without a license.

Michigan can be a very tough state when it comes to those regulations and, as a former resident there, I speak from experience, indirect though it may be (I saw several friends in the field run afoul of those regulations, even though I, myself, did not).

If Spectrum Psychological Services near Ann Arbor is still operating, you might want to contact them as well. Michael Brown and Dr. Stan Wollenstein, who ran the place when I lived there back in the mid-70's sponsored the 1st World Congress on NLP for one thing and co-authored a book on Transactional Analysis that is considered a classic in the field as well. I took several excellent workshops and seminars there, including two with Steve Lankton during that time, so, if you can connect with anyone from there, it would quite possibly be to your advantage. They had a great facility, a wonderful staff and great support for them as well.

If you get good at it and like to teach it you can always just teach other RNs, former RNs and disenchanted RNs to do what you do.
Hmm, your name sounds pretty familiar for some reason... I work for the DMC (HVSH), used to work for NOMC. I don't work too much overtime, but a bit.

I used to work float pool contingent a few years ago, but now I have to be able to carry insurance for myself and family. That is apt to change anytime, so that could be an option in the future.

I suppose in one way, I feel like I've gone as far as I want to with nursing - tired of working holidays, weekends, not getting the vacation time off I request, injuring myself lifting, getting sick from people sneezing on me, etc. etc. - you KNOW all the drawbacks!

So Michelle, sounds like you are in my same area. Where did you take your hypnotherapy classes? Still shopping around.

ShantiShanti
Thanks for the heads up, I'll see if Spectrum is still in business at all, though A2 is a bit of a hike.

I can understand how some people could cross the line with the legal requirements if not careful (or just shady). Not hard to do I'm sure! As a professional, one should stay well-informed in regards to laws regarding the profession (to me, that's part of being considered a professional).

I am thinking I'd definitely need to keep both jobs for a while - would mean working extra hours/days, but there would be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks again!

ShantiShanti
