What suggestions are you giving yourself? It might be the wording that needs to be corrected. It might take more time, i.e. 30 days. Or you might need to work with someone who can do some deeper work to change the initial sensitizing event, if there is one.

Yandos,

I would recommend actually seeing a hypnotist. They can see what's going on, give you the suggestions you need and custom design a take home CD for follow up. Generally, you would write out your suggestions and then record them onto a CD to listen to instead of doing the suggestions "in your own head" as you put it. Remember, those suggestions must meet some criteria to work. They must be: simple, measurable, believable (for instance, you can't give yourself the suggestion that you're going to leap tall buildings - it just isn't believable), positive, present-tense and should carry a reward.

These are things your local hypnotist can help you with. Please go see one.

Well You have a stage hypnotist chuckling.. Yandos. We are not doing fears and phobias on stage.. The suggestions we give are in fun not as corrective work... Please do not compare what we do to what you are attempting to accomplish...

Please tell us more about these situations with crowds.. What type of reactions are you getting and when... Perhaps you can be given some suggestions on wording for a self hypnosis tape versus just attempting to fix this via self hypnosis

Hi everyone Thanks for all the prompt replies :).

Katherine, I tried the phrase my suggestions as positive comments (using "you are X", instead of "you are not Y"),
such as "you feel comfortable with new people", "you feel friendly and relax meeting new people everywhere" and "you enjoy standing in front of a crowed, feeling natural, funny and relaxed".
Every session I do is about 30 minutes, where about 20 is for relaxation (it really takes me a long time until I really feel relaxed) and the induction I use is rather simple (counting back adding relaxing statements every few numbers), and paced imagination (can I pace my own imagination?).

Woodrow, thanks, I had a feeling that this should be my next step, maybe the suggestion is stronger when it is being told to you in a recording the when you say it to yourself? So that if will do. About seeing a hypnotist - I guess it's really a good idea, maybe he will make everything simpler. I actually have a hypnotherapist neighbor :).
Thanks for the list on how to phrase my suggestions - I will definitely use it...

Justin, well you really surprised me here... I don't know so much about stage hypnosis, but is it really simpler to suggest someone with a funny stage suggestion then an everyday rather un-conscious reaction such as the pressure i feel when i need to give a presentation to some 30 top managers in my company?
Indeed you have a most amazing profession...

I tried to read allot about this subject, but when it comes to really using the knowledge in the field itself (me on myself) it seems that even when the technique and basic information is abundant and easy to find - the real use of it requires really high expertise and experience...

Ok I am going to give you some places to go.. Hypnosis with a competent person will work fabulous however.. Toastmasters and Dale Carnegie training will do wonders as well as give you a better foundation of the basic skills.. A hypnotist can assist with the discomfort.. However they can not give you the skills you need to speak in public..

Hello again Yandos.

Having your suggestions played back to you on a CD lets you focus on deepening your relaxation (I'm assuming you are using a relaxation type induction). You are letting the voice on the CD direct you and it just seems to work better. I've tried both and find the CD is much better. The hypnotherapist can direct you as to how to properly do self-hypnosis and help you formulate suggestions that meet the criteria I spoke of earlier. That's the benefit. You get instruction and feedback - two very important parts of a session for self-hypnosis. I think you will find that your hypnostist will make it much simpler and you won't have to worry about whether or not you are doing it right. That's their job.

If you need further assistance, feel free to contact me, although it's not wise to help a client using this kind of medium. A phone session or walk-in session is the way to go.

Hi Yandos,

When you over doing it, your brain shuts down, won't except the suggestions, when you say 12 times what period of time, every few hours? few days? how?

If you are an analytical person or cannot except a direct suggestions, then you may use inferred language.. That will be a little different, focus on confidence, seeing yourself acheiving the goal, the tasct...
and each and every time you see with your minds eye doing it with an easy, say to your self, Yes, I am good, I am capable... ( don't use the word you feel secure )

Hope that helps... If not, you may want to have a hypnotherapist work on you in this case.

Justin, thank you for the references, I learned allot from some of them, and some of them used before... great stuff and really recommended to everyone actually...

Woodrow, I'll definitely use both your suggestions - use a CD for now, and will consider going to a specialist - it might make everything simpler... I'll make sure to message you when I do that...

Doreen - I did those over a period of almost three months... it took me a while just to feel that I'm in the right path to the correct level of relaxation, and then I started with the suggestions..
I'll try rephrasing the suggestions the way you suggest, and will report back on how it goes...

Hi Yandos,

I can understand your situation. Many think that self hypnosis is very powerful and I find that hypnosis by others is more powerful. I have used self hypnosis to heal from cancer and to control a one hour surgery I had to experience. Can it be done? Of course, but it's easier to simply record a session for yourself and then simply play the recording. Using this path once you close your eyes you don't need to use your conscious mind to remember or say suggestions. You can just let go and allow your sub conscious mind to accept everything on the tape or CD. Yandos, in addition to my clinics I entertain with stage hypnosis weekly. They are two different worlds and you can't compare them or the results they create. Hope I have helped. Don

You sure did help, now I understand that recording yourself gives you some of the benefits of being hypnotized by an outside source, allowing you to relax instead of thinking about the induction itself, which actually requires quite an effort for an unskilled person such as me...

Maybe you are giving yourself the wrong suggestions. I had a client that had fear of speaking to a group of co-workers. Upon further investigation, his "real" fear was that he would be judged by these people and get fired for doing a bad of presenting. So once we gave suggestions surrounding being ok with his co-workers negatively judging him and they probably aren't anyway and suggestions about his ability to find a new/better job if he is fired, and worked on the perception that his boss has about his speaking, then his focus was no longer on these irrational fears and it went away very quickly. For all I know he is the worst speaker in the world, but he is able to get up and do it without fear now. So what I am saying is that maybe there is a little more to uncover here than just having the crowd thing, maybe there is something more specific that you can give suggestions about. And maybe you can do some visualization of being in crowds and behaving perfectly normal, or however you actually wish to behave.

There could be an underlying issue such as a secondary gain that may be working against what you want to accomplish
