Do you do any type of lecture demonstrations in your practice? Do you visit social service organizations, civic groups, church associations and the like and sometimes "do a little demonstration" of your work as a therapist, or even of simple suggestions and susceptibility?

If you do, then your current insurance may NOT cover you while you are doing it!

Malpractice coverage, as is usually written in the United States, covers what goes on in your office or in another clinical setting, as defined in the policy. Most policies either do not state, clearly, whether demonstrations of an educational form are covered or they actually EXCLUDE such things, very specifically, including ANY demonstrations done on stage for an audience for entertainment purposes.

This means that, if you do any demonstration of hypnosis with a member of the general public that is not part of an actual consultation that the client has come to you to get, you may NOT be covered by your insurance!

Always read your policy, carefully, obviously, to determine any exclusions or limitations in coverage that it may contain and call your insurance carrier and ask if you don't understand anything contained within the policy.

For anyone who does do lecture demonstrations - and this could include classes and demonstrations/workshops at conventions, I would strongly recommend that you review your coverage and, if there IS an exclusion for demonstrations, GET A POLICY THAT WILL COVER YOU!

Justin James, along with myself and others, has been leading the charge to make sure that hypnotists who do demonstration work will have affordable coverage available to them, which is now available. There are other sources out there as well.

Do the homework, read your policy, make SURE you are covered and, if you aren't GET COVERED.

All it takes is one slip-and-fall or one volunteer who abreacts to cost you everything you own.

Hey Lee-
Thanks for the update. I'm glad you guys got together and figured out how to set all this up. I now Justin James found the new under writer, which is great news.

My question is this:
Does a Group Session fall under the category of demonstration? I know my therapy insurance is around $300 a year, what is the performance insurance going for these days?

Talk to you soon,
Scott Sandland
As far as your group therapy sessions being covered, you are going to have to read your policy to find out whether they are or not. As an educated guess, I would say that they probably are, especially if the people coming to you are clients that you have "signed up" and if the sessions are being done in your "usual place of business."

Otherwise, it may be wise to check with your insurance carrier - call their customer service line and ask for policy assistance or policy information. They will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the information Lee. I wasn't aware of this issue and it's always nice to stay on top of this stuff. Thanks

Josh
