I have a client in her early 40's who has been constantly bulimic for over twenty years. Looks healthy and appears to be in good physical shape except for her teeth that have been effected by her purging. She knows how to eat healthy and does, but also binges on "bad" food then purges each night after a few hours sleep. At the moment her personal life is difficult but the bulimia started long ago. A couple of sessions in, absolutely no progress. Not a great subject either, finds it hard to let go, but is quite desperate to stop her bulimic behavior. Any one had any success with long term bulimics? I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Daryl
I had a client who had been bulimic for 20 years - a French lady in the beauty business and a lot of pressure to be "perfect", even her husband did not know. She ate one meal a day and threw it up afterwards.... to look good for the ladies in her profession - it was "a requirement".

Regression took her to a past life aged 17 where her town was under siege, her parents dead and she was hunting for rats which were to be given to the soldiers so they could eat and go out to fight. They lost and the "enemy" came in and told all the women to leave. She was terrified because she always been told to never go beyond the woods and didn't know what was out there.

As they passed through the dead and dying soldiers, the blood, pain stench was almost palpable in the hypnosis room. One of the ladies said "strip the bodies, we must find food for the journey - can you imagine he repulsion for food even as she searched for it through the dirt and sweat? yes, she was throwing up bile.

AS she was going through the clothing of one soldier she yelled in pain, her hand went to her right back (kidney area) ... I stayed with it and I asked what was happening. One of 'the enemy" had shot her with an arrow. She died in excruciating pain looking for food and throwing up as the other women moved away.

I did the LBL stuff, she took her learnings from that life and chose this life .... she has never thrown up again.

Voila! Sometimes we do regression - but don't get the ISE - in which case as Gerry says ... go back further.
Hello Daryl,

It is normal that the person with bulimia feels too fat and usually dissatisfied with their physical appearance. The bulimic person becomes preoccupied with food and eating. They will have episodes of craving for food and binging, which they do it secretly and immediately after that the feel guilty to the point that will make themselves sick.

Women with eating disorders, especially bulimia, suffer from depression and they will be recommended by their health care professional to be on antidepressant medication.
However, there is no "magic pill" for this disorder to go away, but you can be successful helping your clients by teaching them self hypnosis, because in most cases, they don't like to be controlled and if you do it, they will never come back, unless you start with let me teach you a cool hypnotic tool of self hypnosis, and start the hypnosis, making sure the person understands that this is how it should be done, so they can do it well when they are alone.

It will be s success working with your client with self-hypnosis and every time tell her, when you come back, I will teach new tools... make sure you tell her that if she doesn't want your help, that's fine, but she must understand that people with issues like her, end up being in a hospital anywhere from three to six months treatment, and she will make the decision to come back, because she doesn't like to be in control... make sure you don't sound like threatening her, but just informing her... because you care and that you believe she can help herself.

Now with hypnosis, you induce her into a deep relaxation so your client can allow her mind to become focused... then give her suggestions to help her make the changes that she was not able to make before...

Teach her to control her physical responses, with breathing, muscle tension, relaxing her heart rate, eating when she is hungry, being in touch with her feelings, gaining self esteem and self control and..etc

Bulimic clients have much higher hypnotizability than the average clients. Because they are easily dissociate from reality when they are binging or when they purge.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, I have worked with bulimic and anorexia .. and they are very easy clients..
At first they have a hard time to open up, so start with hypnosis, and slowly they will open up and you work your way from their...

Hello Doreen, Thanks for your contribution to the discussion. You are so right on a number of points, however bulimics may have a higher hypnotizability but this one is very resistant. When ever she feels her self getting into the "zone" she pulls herself out. I have been in practice now for many years, and never have a problem with inducing trance with willing clients but this one freely admits that she finds it very hard to let go. Today I am making a recording for her which she is keen to try. Maybe if , as you say, she doesn't like to feel she is being controlled, she will respond to a recording in private where she is in total control and can choose to press play or stop.
Dear Daryl,

I was going to recommend the recording for her as well, but I will recomand doing the session one more time with the recording only when you are in the office with her, tell her you want to make sure how she responds to the recording when you are in the office...

Also in your recording don't say anything like your eyes are heavy or close your eyes... just say something like, you may keep your eyes wide open staring at one point and concentrating on the sound of my voice... and only if you feel comfortable you may close your eyes, but you really don't have to, so for now keep it open as long as you can... and continue with long slow relaxation... and then with the suggestions... ( I will add a nature music to deepen her more )
I would not touch her or snap my finger or do anything then just seat and see what happens, in the end ask her questions... that should do it, I had the ones that didn't close their eyes until the end.. lol but eventually they have done it.

If she says, I am willing to try it, say to her aa-aa, you are not trying, you will do it, that is a command :) be playful... with big kind smile... and when you talk to her, look into her eyes and give her that sleepy blinking tiring eyes, that will give her another hidden suggestions, that she should rest her eyes...

Good Luck, Doreen

Hi Daryl,

I'm curious to know how things worked out with this client.  I am currently working with a client who binges and, just found out, that she purges as well.  I am gathering as much information as possible before our next session, and found this thread here.
Thanks!
