I am having a hard time establishing myself as "the hypnotist"
When it comes up, I have often gotten the scared responses of "I don't like hypnotist" followed by them walking away... This is fine, I generally laugh to myself, knowing that misconceptions out there have paralyzed parts of sociaty, when it comes to hypnosis... Yet when I tell my family, I get that "yah right good luck with that one" expression.... I have friends who, except it, and are thrilled to give it a whirl, and some who are still skeptical... In a previous forum I posted, (starting street hypnosis soon) I have recieved some very great advice. And due to some persistant health issues and othere inconvenices I have yet to get out there! My question is... How does little 5"3 young 21year old me (a female) convince someone twice my age that I am infact a hypnotist, without them looking at me as some young punk kid, who has no direction in life, and why is she wasting her time on hypnosis??? I have the confidance, but it seems others including family don't have the confidance in me....
How can I approch the situation and prove them all wrong>?
Also someone had mentioned using magic as a starting point... Well first things first, I SUCK at magic, lol! but how do you make that transition from wanna see a magic trick to wanna be hypnotized????
Thanks all for your previous posts on Starting Stage Hypnosis SOON!
Hope to get some more great advice on this one!
Thanks a Million
Amanda
No Sheila you did not misread my post.
What you did do was fail to understand that the term "street hypnosis" applies to any situation outside of the hypnotherapy office and certainly does cover "licenced situations like fairs etc with signage, cameramen and security" It also covers anywhere from church halls to a tent on the front lawn.
I was definately not advocating that Amanda should stand alone on a street corner accosting passing men.
I repeat safety is paramount.

>> and I hand-made a bunch of "Are You Ready To Stop Smoking" matchbooks, that locals bars let me leave for their customers. I'm starting to get calls, and NOW I'm starting to get some respect.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!
Truly, a genius marketing idea - 10 Kudos,

I know this advice may be coming a little later, however I felt the need to respond...
I starting my hypnosis training when I was 22. I was the youngest in my class... the oldest was 83... It dosen't really matter what age you start as long as it's what you love to do...
One day I was out promoting at a fair and came across a lady that was nasty to me ...she said "aren't you a little young to be a therapist?"
I simply told her " I thought I was to old not to know what I wanted to do with my life. "
Move past the people that try to hold you back...
Love your life and do what feels right for you!!!!

P.S. you are never to young or to old to do what you want!
You have to have confidence in your self once they see this everything will become natural to you...no need to feel insecure you will gain confidence no matter how old, how tall you are...just go for it....
This is mostly about hypnotherapy, but most of it applies to street/stage hypnosis as well.
As I see it, the issue you've identified is credibility. So how do we create credibility? What most hypnotists do is create a 'story' about their credibility. The elements of the story are of course true, but they have to be arranged and delivered in a way that's convincing. Elements of your story can include: how you first became interested in hypnosis; what your education has been; what successes you've had with hypnosis. Your story should be delivered in a calm, competent way, as if to say: I want you to know I'm a competent hypnotist, so we can get past this crediblity stuff and get to work solving your problem.
Another tactic is getting people to talk about their issue of presenting problem. This is a way to demonstrate credibility - to actually show it. If you can listen, and reflect back to somebody what they are saying, then you gained a great deal of credibility. This is because most people in the world are poor listeners, and simply listening to somebody is hugely theraputic (you know this already). Listening and reflecting can take some practice however. Again, I reccomend Non-Violent-Communication as a starting point. If you can demostrate this kind of sensitivity, it goes a long way to making your age irrelivant.
So, practice your story. What would you want to be told about if you were appraoching yourself? I find that if I hold the attitude that people want to believe in me, I just need to give them the reason, then I'm successful. And I think this is true for the most part; if people show even a little bit of interest, they want to be convinced of hypnosis, and of your ability.
Also, it can be slightly helpful if you're younger to put a slight spin on your image. Think of yourself as "gifted," or a bit of a "hypnotic prodigy." and that's why you're a pro at such a young age.
Finally, pay attention to the trappings. If you can swing it, a good looking office, and a printed intake form and any other paraphanilia of the hypnotherapist can help. Details such as always looking in your appointment book when you set up an appointment, even if you know the next week is clear. And getting a substantial fee up front, even if you feel shaky about asking for it. All this will increase the success of your therapy as well. It's that word again: expectation.
Again focus on your story - practice it. Practice it in the mirror until you can reel it off in a casual way.
I hope I'm not rambling. I know you can do this Amanda.
Mozart, van Gogh, and Ellner (=^..^=) all demonstrated mastery at a young age and so can you!
Think your talent for helping people help themselves as an in-born gift and discover the fun and joy in developing and expressing your talents and abilities - Recognition will follow!
I agree with Bruce -- One way to speed up the process is to
develop your story telling skills and abilities and begin weaving your story into your family lore...
"Amanda demonstrated the skills and abilities to be coached by the finest hypnosis practitioners and educators in the profession - She has that much promise at 21 years old...Blah, blah, blah..."
Always nice to hear from another prairie dweller.
Being from Winnipeg, I cheer for the Bombers...but the Riders are a very close second for me....and Sask fans are the absolute best.
I don’t know what kind of printed material you are using, but don’t forget that marketing includes ‘packaging’ and ‘branding’.
I am in the fitness business, and I can tell you that you can get people to eat and drink the most appalling things if they are packaged properly...everything from the font to the colours on a bottle of a “sports drink” are geared to influence the buyer/client. Also, printed material allows you to slip some hypnotic/power words to sneak in a little influence.
Try pimping your pamphlets and business cards...they are more influential than most people are aware.
What I did was use some of my local connections to start with local parties got it on tape then showed the Family once they saw I actuly could hypnotise then the attitudes changed some for the better other are faced with misconceptions
and then I found a local party shop and singned up as a hypnotised and they found a few gigs that finaly got me started
I am still working on getting to the big stage but mange well with the small groups and special events in my erea. For the age issue use a script or patter that starts along the lines of would you like to help me with an experement i am studying hypnosys ........
Hope this helps
Most people don't understand Hypnosis so if you try to talk to them about something unknown to them...All you need is to have the confidence and show yourself you can do anything you want and feel good then the ones that have told you negative things will see just how good you are and they will start to understand what your doing and then be there to support you...Believe in yourself first and don't worry about others,,,you can't please everyone just please yourself.
