That is one of his trance effects, and is very easy to do. I have come to understand that trance is when the body (read that as subconscious or unconscious mind) automatically reacts to outside input. In the case of hypnosis, this input can be suggestion. Suggest the subject feels drunk, and long term memory aids the imagination to enable the subject to experience it. They aren't really drunk, they just feel like they are.
he also makes a persons feet stick to the floor and without hypnotizing him
I did both those effects on Sunday with another member of this site who wanted to experience them. He is a student of hypnosis but not personally experienced, so I ran him through things like those.

Derren Brown is a very experienced and well trained hypnotist (in addition to many other things).

Ankit, allow me to demonstrate my amazing Derren Brown-like powers on you Without Even Meeting You!
We are going to glue your eyes shut for a full 7 seconds. read all the instructions twice, THEN follow them from memory. If you do exactly as I say you will be unable to open your eyes for exactly 7 seconds.

What you will do:
1. take a deep breath in, as you exhale close your eyes.
2. Imagine each muscle in your eyelid is becoming as relaxed as a wet towel, nice and heavy, comfortably relaxed. (take a few seconds to really imagine this and feel them getting relaxed)
3. Imagine a window at the very top of your head.
4. With your eyelids still relaxed and closed, roll your inner eyes up like you are looking through your brain, through that window, up at the ceiling.
5. As long as you are looking up you will be unable to open your eyes. The harder you try the more they will shake, but your eyes won't open until you go on to the next step.

6. Finally, look down at the tip of your noes and your eyes will open.

Read this twice so you remember it all. As long as your eyes are looking up through that window they will be glued shut. It should last around 7 seconds.

No hypnosis necessary.

Enjoy,
Scott
Other than it being physically impossible to open your eyes if they are rolled back up like looking through the top of your head, nice misdirection!

Look up recreating drug states nlp, and waking suggestion foot stuck. I agree with the comment about editing, with enough time virtually anyone can be taken in to a deep enough state to experience almost anything. Both of these are tried and true stage hypnosis bits. With very little practice you can do them too.

Also Derren utilizes mentalism and magician skills in many of his routines.

Scott nice ... I call it the Bruce Lee technique--"look at the moon, not at my finger" (3 points for the first person to get that reference)

Derren Brown is a good hypnotist, but don't make the mistake of thinking that just because he LOOKS like he's using hypnosis, he is. The man's a trickster, and he employs a lot of misdirection and clever camera work.
thank you very much what about the name amnesia which he performes casually
hi scott thats nice . i also have one pseudo hypnotic effect
1 ask your spectator to sit on a chair and relax and just calm down .
2 tell him that you are going to take his enegy from his body .
3 then put your index fingers on their for head and tell him to imagine that he is getting glued up to the chair and then tell that you will count from 1 -3 and after that all their power will get lost
4 tell them to close their eyes and count 123 and then with their eyes closed tell them to stand without taking the support of chair.
just use suggestion at the beggining and rest is mechanism
Exactly.
Derren is combining a whole bunch of different effects: Mentalism, hypnosis, NLP, close up magic, camera tricks, editing, etc.

He is very good at what he does, but that isn't always what he says he is doing.

Watching Derren Brown was actually one of the catalysts for my deciding to study hypnosis--yet the more I watch him, the more I think about how easy it is to look brilliant if you have a good editing team. :-)
Hi,

I guess we have to define hypnotized- in that sense "waking-hypnosis" is an oxymoron -- But in real life people are hypnotized in and out of "conventional" trances--
In my opinion, if a person is told that their feet are stuck to the floor and the person's feet stick to the floor - they are hypnotized!
If a person is told your eyes will be stuck for exactly 7 seconds and their eyes are stuck for exactly 7 seconds - the person has been hypnotized

It is enlightening to discover that conventional entrancement is not necessary for a person to be profoundly hypnotized...

Me, me, me....

"look at the moon, and not at my finger" is from the teachings of the Buddha...
