Hello,

I have a new client that would like help with not being short with people.
As he put it "In other words a attitude problem". This would be the first time I have work with this kind of issue.

This group really has some talented people in it. I am looking in to tapping in to this wealth of knowledge and ask for your input on how best to help this person with this problem.

One thing is critical is that the type of work he does is very stressful and critical.
The client's job is 911 communication and I am sure this is why he is seeking help with his attitude. I don't have the all the details yet but this is my first impression I get from him.

Any advice on how to approach this issue I would be grateful for your input.

P.S
If you have a script you would like to share on attitude problem that would be wonderful!

It is probably likely that he has two things going on. Firstly his body is conditioned to be a stress receptical. Teaching him how to relax on a regular basis is helpful. If you have your own CDs or recommend others he can use after his sessions with you it would be helpful.

Secondly it is likely that he is carrying a great deal of emotional baggage such as anger or sadness or fear or more than likely a combination of all those with guilt thrown in for good measure.

He may other underlying problems connected to those negative gestalts. My approach would be to get him to be specific about his problem then release all of the above and teach him self hypnosis supplemented with a recording for him to listen to regularly.
Hello Sidney,

Back in a previous life, I was a police dispatcher. While this type of work is extremely rewarding and exciting, it is also fraught with emotional stress: imagine being responsible for people's safety and lives, not just the public's but the police officers' whom you also serve.

Brian is right: teaching your client how to decompress and release that stress during his work shift will be of huge benefit. One of the other contributors to his self described "attitude problem" may be that the general public may not be in the best of moods when they contact him. They are dumping all of their fears and anger on him (hey, not unlike being a hypnotherapist!). You can teach him how to keep from taking on these negative energies. I'm attaching a process that I would use with such a client to do just that.

Your client does a very valuable and under-appreciated service. Be sure to let him understand how important and appreciated it is. When we feel that we are taken for granted, it's easy to be surly. Perhaps you can anchor a congratulatory or thankful message that repeats each time he handles a call.

Best wishes,

Kelley

PS ~ My best 911 call ever was the citizen who phoned in that someone kept dumping dirt on his lawn. He was very irate. I sent an officer over to his house. 15 minutes later the officer reported over the air, "Complainant has moles." har har

I would ask him the following first

What people specifically does this happen with? ( Family? Friends? Co-workers? Everyone?)
What is the frequency?
How does it (attitude) manifest itself in his behaviours?
What is he feeling at that time?
What triggers it?
When did it begin? (What age)
ect.

Once you have more information then you can formulate what to do with the client in hypnosis.
Wow..tnat is a stressful but, rewarding job.
I would work on his stress level and show him how to do self hypnosis to help him at home and on the job.
Remember we are all creatures of habit...so by showing him its possible to relieve the stress.. he can see
some hope and maybe learn to relax. He probably takes his job home with him so by showing him to let go
of the stress his home life will be better also.

Hope this helps...
Change behavior pattern, reframing and some downtime for him self. I would also suggest anchoring a type of phone(headset, or whatever) he uses to good feelings and use the quick phobia cure, but in a different way with some reframming and anchoring in the context of what he specifally does at work and do that five times. Not only would it take away from all the stree from negatives in his job, but the negatives would turn to a positive for him, so he would enjoy his job much more. The quick phoia cure is to set up the change pattern, before you start the anchoring and reframing. Then followed by the change behavior pattern, more specifically to add to the anchors and re-enforce positive feelings to his job and hence eustress..
Hi Sidney,

Not sure when or where client wants to improve his attitude problem -- May or may not be work related -- Many folks give their callers their best and have attitude problems with every one else.

I suggest you help the client create a resource state - the client's heart is happy, their mind is peaceful, and their spirit is playful and they feel so good they are able to give every one their best -- Blah, blah Blah -- Anchor it and give the client a cue to go there if necessary...

Warmest regards,

Michael E.

Wow!

What great advice...
I really do appreciate everyone’s input.

Thank You
Sidney
I have not made my own cds yet. Could you recommend where to buy one at?

I have learned the Self-Hypnosis 3-method through the NGH course but I don’t like it.
Could you recommend another way of teaching a client Self-Hypnosis.

Thank You

Hello Sidney,

I suggest this protocol to develop an awareness in your client:

1. Assessment: Pay attention to how your client is breathing.
2. Objective: Teach client how to control breath with self-hypnosis.
3. Session Work: Associate control of breath with control of anger while client is in hypnotic state.

Recommended reference book: "Science of Breath" by Yogi Ramacharaka

All the best,

You could try the Betty Erickson method. Or look up Erickson's uptime/downtime inductions, which translates well into self-hypnosis.

Hi Sidney,

It also sounds to me like your client isn't doing a good job of separating his "I" from his "R" (his "i" being his identity as a human being, his self, vs. his "r" meaning the roles he has, including his job.)

If you have a solid enough "I", it matters much less what you have going on in your "R" realm. There's an aphorism that illustrates this really well, a saying I've heard used by Christians: "Hate the sin, love the sinner." I think it's a healthy form of compartmentalization. I don't know how you address this with hypnotherapy, though.

Another tool I'd recommend is The Work by Byron Katie. It's life-changing. Again, it's not hypnotherapy, but it's awesome nonetheless.
