Scenario: The "client" has no previous experiences of hypnosis and is interested in being hypnotized.

Here is a little script I wrote, please could you tell me if this pre-talk would be sufficient for someone to go into hypnosis?

Hi there, (Name). Now before we begin, I'd just like to explain exactly what hypnosis is. Hypnosis is a natural state that happens many times throughout the day, for example when you are in a lift and you are watching the numbers and the lift stops and you think "Is this my stop?" That is hypnosis. Another example is when some is talking to you at a lecture or a party and they are just so boring, you feel like you are drifting away and their voice just fades away into the background. That is hypnosis.

Now I'd like to say that contrary to popular belief, during hypnosis I can't make you do anything you wouldn't normally do. In fact it would be easier to make you do something now. It is purely a state of high suggestibility. Also you can't get stuck in hypnosis, Zen monks pray for it and try for years to become The Buddha but with no success so far.

Finally, do you have any fears or inhibitions about hypnosis? (Wait for reply and clear up misconceptions and fears.)

Another thing for me to say is that when you hear me say the word "sleep", I'm not referring to the kind of sleep you do at night, I'm referring to the hypnotic sleep like in the lift and the lecture or party.

Right, let's begin!

(Then move to the arm drop method)

Also, I see these videos of people being hypnotized without a pre-talk and the hypnotist uses the word sleep but he hasn't told them that he means hypnotic sleep. Would this work?

Hi Conca
This pretalk has all the standard boxes ticked, however Reg is spot on.

Posting an example here with just the words is like me writing out the script of a conversation and saying 'if I said this to someone on the street would he be my friend?"

Hypnosis is an unconscious process, thus the best pretalks, inductions and suggestions come from your unconscious.
Check out the video http://www.hypnothoughts.com/video/how-to-do-an-instant-hypnosis where on slide 2 or 3 I discuss some useful pretalk tips, hope that will help you clarify this.

Cheers
Nathan
oh, and read Reg's article, he hits the pond on the head... (ok bad pun, but do check it out)

Conca:
First of all, let me say that I agree completely with my friends Reg and Nathan. They know their stuff! I like your pre-talk and I think it will work fine.

Just for a little variety, here is my pretalk from my student guide for the street hypnosis course:
I only do instant and rapid inductions, and I find that this pretalk works very well with cold walk-ups.
A sample pre-talk

"Let me tell you about hypnosis. First of all, it’s not sleep. You will not be unconscious or “zonked” You’ll hear every word I say and you will remember every word I say. It’s a natural state that we all drift in and out of many times each day… very much like daydreaming or like the way you feel at night just before you drift off to sleep. It’s very relaxing and everyone says it feels wonderful. It just feels good. Let me give you an example of a hypnotic state you’ve probably experienced. Have you ever been driving down the highway, lost in thought and suddenly realized you had missed your exit? What you were doing is concentrating so intently on one thought that you blocked everything else out. Or how about this, have you ever been engrossed in a book or magazine article and had someone come into the room and say something to you, but you did not hear them? That’s another example of a light form of hypnosis! Now let me tell you about the three most common misconceptions I hear from people who don’t understand hypnosis:

1. Loss of control. There is no loss of control in hypnosis and in fact, instead of losing control you will actually be taking control of a part of your mind that you don’t normally have control of… your subconscious mind. Hypnosis is a 100% consent state. You would never do anything in hypnosis that you wouldn’t normally do. You would never do anything that was against your moral, personal or religious values OR anything that you just didn’t feel like doing. When you are deep in hypnosis, if I were to ask you to stand on your head, you would shake your head and say, “I don’t think so!” It’s just that simple.

2. Telling secrets. If there is a secret that you would keep in your normal waking state, you will keep that secret in hypnosis. You will not give the hypnotist the pin number for your ATM card. (Laughs)

3. Getting stuck. Sometimes this happens in movies, for instance “Office Space”. But it’s impossible. In five thousand years of people getting hypnotized, nobody ever got stuck! So getting stuck isn’t a possibility either.

It’s easy to go into hypnosis and anyone can do it. Anyone of normal intelligence, so we have no problem there, do we?  So that’s everything.
Do you have any questions before I hypnotize you?"

The last line is especially important because it presupposes that the person is going to go into hypnosis.

Best Wishes,
Sean Michael Andrews

How about just suspending with the explanations about hypnosis since they are already interested, and saying instead:
"In a moment then, I will enable you will experience a wonderful hypnotic trance. Just follow my instructions and you will be very surprised at how good it feels! Is that okay with you? Good. Are you ready?...

Arm Drop induction.

And to answer your question: The term "sleep" is used because the reactive mind already knows what it means, and will make the body comply automatically. (Notice that I said body, and not mind) So, the explanation is unnecessary.

So someone who has never been hypnotized before would know that I meant to go into trance?

Conca,

Even if they have never been hypnotized before they will go, if they are willing. Remember hypnosis works because the individual is willing to do it.
In all reality you simply want to bypass the "critical factor". The word "Sleep" does not have to be used, but in most cases it is used because we have "conditioned" ourselves with that word, so it works.
If you have done everything correctly and built rapport and trust, and they are willing, they will go. In fact I have seen people enter trance and the word “sleep” was never even used.

Conca,
Trance is just a state for us where we automatically react to outside input. Hypnosis takes advantage of this state by realizing that the outside input can be in the form of a suggestion.

When you say sleep, the reactive mind is responding in the only way it knows how, to put the body into the condition it has when it sleeps. It just has to first know how to react, in order to do so. This is why you have to explain the effect that the numbers will have on them when you count them, before you count them, so they know how to react when you do count them.

Sleep is a universally understood concept. It is just an easier and more understood way to say "go limp" like you do when you sleep. Your command itself is not taking them into trance, they are reacting to your suggestion while they are in the trance state you created, by the confusion/surprise or for that matter, normal induction.

Trance is not the effect, trance is the state that enables the effect to happen.

I hope this is clearer for you.

Thanks guys you have really cleared this up, I'm going to do my first instant induction today hopefully. (That is as long as I can find a friend who also has a free period today.)

I'll let you know how I got on and I'll remember to be confident!

Conca

P.S. I'm relatively new to the website and I must say that you are all brilliant and helpful so thank you again.

Have a nice day.

I haven't had chance sorry, I've had so much work from college but I might do it tomorrow because there is a girl who wanted me to hypnotize her and I have an hour off tomorrow so I'll let you know.

Thanks for the interest though!
