NGH, AHA, APHP, ASCH, ACHE, IMDHA, CCH, ARCH...am I the only one who is confused and lost in this sea of associations?! (Forgive me if I excluded your favorite, it's totally due to my ignorance, and please, add it to the list.)

Which association to you belong to (if you do belong to one), and why? How does it benefit you personally and what do you contribute to it?

Or, are you a free-wheeler...that independent type who likes to operate on their own? Inquiring mind wants to know...

Kelley,

I'm a "free-wheeler" all the way.
Always have been, always will be.
There might well be some good organizations out there- but I value
my total independence above all else.

Hi Kelley,

Participation within these organizations is how one distinguishes him or or herself within an organization and within our field. There is huge pleasure, satisfaction and practical benefits in having one's work recognized and honored. I support my membership in the groups below in the spirit of inter-dependence - We offer them credibility and they offer us credibility. When Every One Wins - We All Win-

Hi Kelley,

I belong to the IMDHA. Writing their exam was part of graduating from my hypnosis program in BC Canada. Last May, I attended their conference in Daytona, which was well organized and quite inspirational. I feel Robert and Linda Otto are very dedicated leaders, and are attentive towards their members' needs.

I am not so familiar with the other organizations out there, other than the NGH. I've been considering membership with them. I live in a more remote area of Ontario Canada, so more than anything, membership and attending conferences gives me the opportunity to meet other hypnotherapists and share experiences and learning.
Hi Kelley
I have belonged to IMDHA & IACT for years. I also belong to IHF (International Hypnosis Federation). I have been a member of ACHE, NGH, ABH and a few others. Consistently IMDHA & IACT have met my professional needs. Students of my school receive student memberships for IMDHA. My school is also approved by IACT & IHF.

HypnoThoughts has filled much of my need for an association - but I do feel there is a need and benefit to the live personal interactions that occur at conferences.

Kelley,
I'm always torn between being a free-wheeler and wanting more 'ready' information at my fingertips. I like associations that leave me alone, for the most part. I want to learn, quietly and without the politics.
The problem with associations is the tenure/click/politics issue. And it happens with any association (in and out of our field), some worse than others. One of the reasons I have stayed away from one of the top associations is because of bad press surrounding its 'click'. It could be hearsay, but I live a busy life...I simply don't want to throw my energy toward something that may or may not give me the same energy back.
I mean, don't get me wrong.... nothing is wrong with the click if I am in it ~evil grin~ so.... if anyone is involved with an association that has a top click, and you want to let a 5 year old in and are willing to think I'm awesome, too... call me.

I have been with the AHA for about 3 years - it has many videos and recordings. I like that. I get motivated to learn about different things I may not have been aware of prior.

My current sights have been on the NFNLP association and the IMDHA.... basically, for the same reasons - I seek ready information and good energy.
I have talked to W. Horton and he gives great energy back...that attracts me. I haven't talked to anyone about the IMDHA - but it has good press and the people involved with that association all seem happy... it deserves a looksee... in my book. Do these have clicks/politics/etc. too? probably... but I don't hear the bad press about them.
So, hey.... keep me in the dark about how ridiculous you are and....I'll give you money?!

Hypnothoughts is one of my favorite organization/association. It fits all my criteria. It has great information, I can get involved when I want to, I don't have to deal with the politics, it has good energy...some days great energy - and any bad energy I can ignore. ~grin. It has been of more benefit, to me, than any other association/organization.

What I contribute: Well, I suck at contributing to these associations. I pay the fees required and then I go to my corner to learn. I will be better at contributing this year. One of my new year solutions is to show the love to those I love best.

~D.
Kelley,

I choose IMDHA. My training was under, Founder, Anne Spencer. I choose IMDHA after researching a number of other organizations. I got a very real sense of integrity from the organization and Anne. The training was a good mix of lecture, reading, discussion, and experiential practice (both as client & Hypnotist).

I think a diversity of organization is important to the development of the profession. And we are at an interesting point in time with the internet and sites like hypnothoughts. It think it will only accelerate the evolution.

I’m reminded of the following book that made Fast Company's, list of The Best Business Books of 2009: "Create Your Own Economy" by Tyler Cowen.
From the review: At first glance, our time communicating with friends on Facebook, Googling, organizing photos on Flickr, and other social activity seems like a waste of time. But Cowen, an economist, provocatively argues that they are all forms of economic activity and we need to account for the internal production inside our minds.

Michael
Thank you, everyone for your replies! I see how many of you are engaged with your chosen associations and I imagine that you enhance their membership greatly.

Donna, as I read your post a sympathetic bell rang for me: in another lifetime I owned a retail business in a busy tourist town. I served one year as the president of the Chamber of Commerce, the next as the president of the co-op preschool and finally as president of the Kiwaniis and I think I finally burned out, especially on the politics!

At this point I want to be a part of something bigger than myself without losing myself in it. The comments here have given me some direction and in the meantime, I agree that being a member of HypnoThoughts is affordable (free!) worthwhile and fun and I'm grateful.

Best wishes,

Kelley
