the Free Hypnosis Social Network
Suggestions needed a.s.a.p. I just received an email inquiry from a lady asking me about athletic performance.
Her words; "My question is this, my daughter plays on a club volleyball team, very competitive, and there is this team, well more than one, but this is the top team around here & has been for years, the problem is when the girls have a tournament & they see they have to play these teams they automatically assume they will lose & they are pretty much beat as soon as they walk on the court. I thought hypnosis might be a way to help them to just go out and play their game no matter who they are playing?? Can you help us with this"?
Honestly, I've never worked with any kind of athletic performance, much less for a group. I'd love to help this lady AND to be able to do it in a groupsession for the team. However, I need some ideas so I can put together a basic plan as to how I would approach this before I respond to her.
If you received this email, what would your hypnosis program "plan" be in order to be successful with these girls in a private session AND for a group session(s)?
I know some hypnotherapist specialize in sports and athletic performance; I've just never had it come my way .....
Thanks in advance for your input! :)

Permalink Reply by Barry Neale on February 1, 2012 at 2:12pm Hi Wanda,
I have done quite a bit of this in the past. Typically one on one but I have worked with quite a few teams also.
Many of the techniques that you use in one on one can easily be adapted to groups.
The first thing I do is get them to see the value in what you are about to teach them. I will ask them questions along the lines of, "what percentage of your sport do you think is physical/ what percentage mental?
Most times they will say quite a high percentage is mental. I will then point out that they spend many hours practising and training the physical but how much time do they practise the mental?
This normally gets them to see the point of what you are about to do.
Its a good idea to scatter your presentation with motivational sports quotes. Here is a good place to start
http://mymotivationalsportsquotes.com/excellent-motivational-sports...
I then talk about resource anchors. I then show the group the New Zealand rugby team "The All Blacks" performing a "haka" at the beginning of a match and then ask them what sort of mental state the all black are in when the finish the haka. Watch this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdMCAV6Yd0Y
Then I set up powerful resources anchors. bring one person up front and demo it and then lead the group.
I then run them through a closed eye process where they visualise the game/match and fire the resource the anchor and have them imagine playing the game feeling "this" way.
its a good idea to use music at this point. I favour the theme from chariots of fire.
Another great visualization to use particularly in the situation mentioned is a technique used by Richard Bandler.
What you do is have them imagine the other team down below them in a valley, small and weak, either side of the valley are mountains with lightning crashings all around, they are standing their looking down on the other team and they start to rise up into the form of a gigantic 40ft tall black puma and they paw the ground...and they say to themselves in a forceful voice, "YOUR A$$ IS MINE" . Around the valley there are gospel choirs singing, YEH, YOUR A$$ IS MINE.
Really lay it on. A scripted version of this is in Bandlers, Time for a Change.
If I have time I might pump them up and have them right down all their limitations on a board and then do a board break. This is really powerful with a group and can get them really pumped but only do it if you know how.
Future pace them firing the anchors before and during the match.
Also give them each a confidence CD and you are good to go!
There are many other things you can do but this should get you going.

Would you mind saying more about the "board break"?
I've been meaning to send you a note with an update with my ADD guy that had memory and retention issues. I saved the PDF book you sent, and ordered the one I found on Amazon by the same author. I prepared .... and then.....he called and canceled his next appointment saying he had some personal things to deal with and now wasn't a good time! I haven't been able to reach him since.
Makes one wonder if he really wanted to go back to school and if the idea of actually overcoming this would be such a good thing. (negative pay off for finding a reason not to come back in)!

I am aware of parental consent and I agree...must meet with parents and coaches first and get them on board. I'm thinking coach first! :) I like your ideas and suggestions. I'm making a whole doc with all the great suggestions I'm getting and will use them all to when I put my program plan together! :)

Good on you - Wanda! The fact they are considering hypnosis is a golden opportunity for you to help your local team win!In a word the answer is YES! -- Hypnosis can help individual players and the team perform at peak levels. You probably are aware of this, but just in case-- Signed consent slips for each and every minor is a must in most states.Great advice from Barry! I am confident that you will be able to offer first rate group and/or one-on-one sessions depending on how they want to utilize your services...Hints:It is a good idea to meet with the team's coaches and parents - if possible... Explain that hypnosis can help their children and the team as a whole play more effectively-- In the mid-1980s a friend who was a team member of bank soft-ball team asked me if hypnosis could help the team beat the team that always stomps them -- I met with the team and suggested hypnosis was and ideal way to help. Some team members had doubts about hypnosis - I said "Forget hypnosis - visualization and imagery can help each of you play your best games at the same time and even though these dawgs have beaten you in the past and are a better team - they won't be a better team when each and every one of you is in synch and playing your best game -- We did a group process about moving into the ZONE together the morning of the game and working and playing with that sense of excitation and connection for the next 24 hours... I tossed in they would be waking up with a deep felt sense that they are destined to win today's game and they did...

Permalink Reply by Kelley Woods on February 4, 2012 at 11:37am Hey Wanda,
If I were working with a team like this I would educate them about peripheral awareness on the court while teaching them how to leave outside distractions behind. I would want them to know about muscle memory (unconscious abilities) and time distortion. I would help them create a "pre-night" ritual using self-hypnosis/recordings to ensure good sleep and fruitful attitudes.
One of the best things you can do with this team of players is to create a sense of unity and synchronicity. Lead them through a mental rehearsal by pacing their breathing, then creating imagery of energy connections (strings, webs, etc.) and let them discover that they ARE one...that they are thinking and feeling and moving on the same energized and successful plane, effortless, smooth, etc. Let them come up with the anchor to enter this zone, perhaps a pep cheer or count, and install it. Rinse and repeat.
Be sure to get input from all of the players regarding their desires for the win: what does it mean, how will life be different, etc., and weave this powerful stuff into the future pacing experience.
Sounds like a lot of fun! Hopes it's a smash...Kelley
PS ~ You can also let the girls know the power of telling the opposing team, "Don't lose!" heh heh
