Hello Friends...I am a very new hypnotherapist looking for some insight from my peers! I will be meeting with a new client, he is a nine year old boy suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder. If anyone has worked in this area and has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

I am not convinced that ADD is really a disorder.

What does the actual KID say?
ADD is one of those conditions that people are not sure of. Having a wife and son that have the condition, I am well aware of the reality of it. That being said, it is not like a habit or fear that can be "conditioned" out of them by hypnosis. It is how their brains function. Just as there are some that are naturally athletic, or natural musicians, or problem solvers, the ADD is a condition of short attention span and easy distraction.

The classic example is when talking about what you can do with hypnosis when you (Look! a chicken!..wow! ahem, uh, oh yeah,) talk about ADD. The answer is not really that much. These people have to learn how to cope to become functional as adults.

Good Luck with it

Lisa, lets play with the case in various ways.
1. If the child gets medicamentation, just give him a placebo and tell him, its the real - better - healthier brand.
2. Tell the child, that the ability to CONCENTRATE on multiple things AT THE SAME TIME is a special ability.
His brain will be able to work faster and on multiple levels than other brains and all he has to learn, is to adapt to the SLOWER level of his classroom teachers. :-)
Next Step: Show him progressive relaxation and do some snail races with him.
The story of the snail race has to be:
Every day in the time between times (celtic word for dawn), the snails meet to do a magic competition.
The big difference is:
The slowest snail will win.
YOU are invited to compete, maybe You will not be the slowest one, but You have the honest chance to be one of the best.
3. Alternative there are some very good concentration exercises in RAJA YOGA, as Tratak.
Our western culture does not have real concentration technics, did You know.
Have a look in the internet, - alternative I will write down some basic features.
Have fun with Your client.
Erich
Thanks again to all who replied Great insight!
I wonder if this is a serious suggestion: for a hypnotist to give a child a placebo and tell them that it is healthier than the medicine their doctor prescribed them?

I can just imagine the child's next doctor visit: "The nice hypnotist man told me to take this pill, he said it was better than the one you told me to take."

I like having "fun with clients" too, but that doesn't sound like fun. Sounds like a serious legal problem!

Even as a joke I would be careful in saying something like this. I agree with Grumpy, a serious lawsuit if someone took what you said to heart. Careful, careful.

I have a very high success rate using Joane Goulding's SleepTalk TM Aproach ...teaching the parents to give the child suggestions in their sleep ( similar but not the same as Elman's Hypnosleep )
Reading Your concerns about placebo-therapy, I think I have to make clear two sentences
1. Have fun with Your client - doesn´t mean to make jokes about Your client - instead I ment to give the child the impression, that therapy should be perceived as joyous.
2. Placebos has been proven to be 60 % effective, - hypnotic induction, telling the child, that it will get a hypnotic pill while sleeping by his/hers favorite pet during the dream, (of course a real PLACEBO-Pill will be crazy, the client would have to come for new ones from time to time.)
- this is surely without sideeffect and no drug concern will suit You
3. Maybe it could be a cause to be lawsuited, if You say, this is better than XY - that is not my intention.
I would suggest, that the "hypnotic pill" is even stronger, but without sideeffects.
