Nicol,
I always use music or ocean sounds. And having a variety makes my day more pleasant. I like Annie Brunson's music. She's a musician and her husband is a hypnotherapist.
You can find a great selection at www.musicforhypnotherapy.com She has specials quite often, too.

When I'm in trance, I don't notice the music at all, so whether it's annoying, repetitious or boring is moot. During the induction, however, it can set a relaxing mood and mask any distracting noises in the room.
Most of the background music I have experienced is smooth, simple and repetitious. Being an amateur musician, I have specific tastes, but I haven't found any of the background music chosen for hypnotic recordings to be annoying. My only issue with music is when there is a sudden transition. That tends to bring me out of trance.
I don't think it's a big issue. Music can add a finishing touch so that the whole recording has a more professional feel. At the same time, if there are other effects, such as a dual induction, I don't think it's necessary.
