Does anyone have any professional experience using hypnosis/story telling to help a 5 year old boy who still wets the bed occasionally? Thanks.

Hi Marianne - hypnotherapist Alicia Eaton combines hypnosis with NLP for bedwetting and that seems to do the trick in 95%+ of cases - she uses a book and mp3 download as leave behinds with the parents to ensure that the situation doesn't reoccur - Stop Bedwetting in 7 Days.
I have dealt with children dealing with enuresis. Many things can contribute to this. I would check to see if there is secondary gain by being allowed to get into bed with mom and dad or something like that. I would next consider if the child is afraid of the dark and the hallway to the bathroom is dark and scary. If that is the case maybe a night light would solve the issue. There is also the possibility that the child plays so hard during the day they sleep too soundly to wake up enough to get out of bed. Again, maybe a night light might help. Once the cause is determined it will certainly make it easier to help with. I generally get the child involved by making certain mom or dad have them help changing the sheets and if the matress is wet have them move to a sleeping bag instead of mom and dad's bed.
It is also likely the child's bladder has not developed enough to 'carry the load' overnight and he will outgrow it in his own time.
As far as in state, I suggest going through the normal night time rituals (brushing teeth, putting on DRY pajamas etc) and then getting into a nice warm DRY bed. At any time during the night if the urge to go strikes, simply wake up and go to the bathroom. Have him picture himself flushing the toilet and getting back into a nice DRY bed. Then waking in the morning in the nice DRY bed wearing the nice DRY pajamas. I also have the parents move the bedroom furniture around to signal there is change coming.
Hope it helps,
Steve
Hi Marianne,

I personally have not seen a client with bedwetting. At that age their imagination is the best product to use. They are very good at expressing themselves through drawing or toys. I would use their favourite toy/colours and make up a story of how their toy learnt to go to toilet when they need to even when they are sleeping. So story to go in direction that their toy will whisper in their ear when they need to go (or something like that).

I would also suggest to have the light left on of the toilet or hallway which helps the kids with direction or stop getting scared. We used that with our daughter and she stopped in a week.

I hope this helps.

A big 'thanks' to all of you who have sent in such a great variety of ideas about bedwetting! In the strange way these things happen, the boy in question spontaneously stopped bedwetting... however the advice is invaluable, and I am sure plenty of other people will benefit from it.
This is such a great community, with so many people prepared to help...

cheers ... Brett
