I love WordPress--but I swear, the most difficult part of figuring out the right plugins to use. Half the time "you don't know what you don't know" and don't even know that you need certain plugins. When you do look for plugins, you may find a dozen that serve the same purpose, but have to try them one at a time and see which are broken, which don't work well at all, which would be fine for a different website, and which ones are good--but not as good as the one you could find.

So the solution is obvious--for those of you who have engaged in that painstaking research, what are your favorite plugins that you tend to install on most of the WordPress sites you make?

I know it wont be long before someone says whats this got to do with hypnosis, but we all/many of us use Wordpress for our hypnosites so I recommend you get the advice of Alex Sysoff at http://www.howtospoter.com/ he will send you blogging tips every day and his expert wordpress automatically instals an SEO optimised plugin set. There cant be anything he doesn't know about blogging.

Good Buddy Cenay Naylor http://www.cenaynailor.com/ also knows everything there is to know about Wordpress, has videos, tutorials and a very hand link to the blogging Skype chat for the very latest tips and treats plus your questions answered. She'll even do it for you if you grease her palm with silver. LOL

Keith,

The question isn't 'what's this got to do with hypnosis', but 'what would be the best forum to ask these questions on?'

The answer is : http://wordpress.org/support/
For seo, the best plugin to use is not the "all in one seo", rather use the one over at http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/

My advice is try not to install too many plugin. Too many plugins will make your site slow if you're not using some kind of caching plugin (wt3 total cache is what I'm using). Another plugin that I would never go without is the sexyboomarks plugin.

The google xml sitemaps plugin helps to create a sitemap plugin automatically. Its great for seo. I think having a sitemap allows google to find your stuff better.

Also, make sure you use a wordpress database backup plugin. Having a database plugin has helped save my butt numerous times

Yup I have the auto backup plug in too. It hasn't saved my bacon yet but when it needs to I know it will, so that should be a first stop for plugins. If I ever mess with my blog, or an outsider does it's reassuring to know I can fix it with any one of my daily backups. The sexybookmarks plugin is oh so sexy too.

Thanks Keithanthony and Antonio for the helpful tips, so we can all help each other as we learn how to market our practices.
Keithanthony, you've given me plenty of reading material! I especially found the following pages from those sites helpful, listing their preferred plugins:

http://www.cenaynailor.com/services/plugin-consultation/
Chad, I would recommend to check out the wordpress forums. Also one thing that has helped me greatly is to check out the wordpress irc chat (#wordpress on freenode.net). Its helped greatly. Chad if you want any of my suggestions hit me up on skype (emergeunited is my skype name).

Argh!! I just left a huge post and I lost everything. What I was going to say (in a much shorter version) is do NOT go with that Cenay Nailor lady. She is charging WAY to much for her services. If I remember correctly she will install wp for $75. It takes 5 minutes to install wordpress on a server. I'll usually do this for free for someone.

argh, so mad that I lost everything that I was typing. I forgot there was a 15 minute reply time to edit a post. If anyone wants me to type what I was typing earlier reply to this and let me know. It was basically a breakdown of the ludicrous prices that Cenay is charging, and how to do a good amount of that stuff (for free).

Just now, I was checking out a site that Cenay recommended people check out (supposedly its the ultimate guide to wordpress plugins).

"The *Secret* Plugin That Makes Installing All The Others A Breeze."
You no longer need this plugin, as you can autoinstall all plugins via the wordpress dashboard.

"How To Get Visitors to Return Time After Time."
This is simple. Start off by having GOOD CONTENT, and encourage folks to comment and subscribe to a newsletter.

For only $1,075 she'll do a full site instal! (Mind you, thats not a site DESIGN. Most good web designers will do all of what she say's she'll do for much much cheaper)

The thesis platform for me is a must for wordpress,
then there is yoast breadcrumbs,
cformsII for contact forms,
Post plugin library and yet another similar post plugin, google xml sitemaps, smart 404 is a definite must.
I used cformsII for quite some time but was having really bad load times with my site. I know there is some kind of workaround so that cformsII will only load be accessed while on a certain page. Another good alternative is contact form 7. CformsII (if you can keep it only loading on a particular page, ie a contact page) has some really good features.
