Books and other resources that have helped your practice

Hi all! I wanted to post this topic to see what books and other resources such as; dvds, audio cds, etc. have helped jump start and move your practice along. I had read think and grow rich by Napoleon Hill  prior to my start and it helped immensely. I also credit my confidence to Sean Michael's Dvds and the book how I raised myself from failure to success in selling which both always instill that enthusiasm  I need! I would love to hear  some resources all of you have benefited from.

Enjoy the weekend,
Geoff

Hello Geoff,

There have been some great discussions on this topic, such as http://www.hypnothoughts.com/forum/topics/716892:Topic:44900 in addition to at least one group here on HT that focuses on relevant books, movies, etc.

Many of the best books were written by members of this community...which leads me to report that being an active member of HT can jump start and move your practice along! What I appreciate most is that with over 6k members, I am constantly exposed to new ideas and perspectives, which is really the essence of our work.

Perhaps one day, Scott and Melissa, proprietors of HypnoThoughts, will edit a collection of "best posts"...I bet it will be a best seller!

Cheers! Kelley
Hello Kim,

In your profile you state a comment that I believe is the basis for how one's life is, “Perception is Everything.”

When I read that in your profile I immediately I wanted to mention to you how important something else is that was pointed out to me that I had never thought of before. It also is very important for how our lives are: “Projection is Everything.”

Well how could perception and projection both be everything, I know.

I didn’t want to come across as someone criticizing your profile, so I thanked my intuition and knew that if I were supposed to make a comment, I would have, but since I didn’t, I just let it be.

Then I read your beautiful reply about getting upstarted. I am a big believer in working backwards. Starting from the outcome you want and working backwards on what it takes to get there.

It’s the same as one of the processes for achieving goals. I was always afraid to set goals because I didn’t know how I would get there. Then someone said, you don’t have to know how to achieve your goals, just set them, give them a time. The difference between a dream and a goal is a date, a time.

And the setting of goals is another way where working backwards is highly beneficial. It’s like if your goal is New York and you are in California, you circle New York on the map, and once that is your focus, you start moving in that direction, if you keep heading in that direction, you will eventually end up there, if you set a time, then your plans become time dependent. Even if you don't know how you're going to get there in the beginning, it's amazing how these things that we focus on figure themselves out.

How we see things, (perception), is the difference between night and day, and from what we perceive, we project.
Everyone projects, some call it influence, but what we project has a direct effect on those we come in contact with.
Confidence is a common projection.

I like being reminded about one of the things you mention, “consider the type of people you wish to have as clients.”

You posted an excellent reply, glad you are here, welcome to Hypnothoughts.

Hello, Geoff-
When I advise regarding upstart businesses & endeavors, I usually suggest to "Work Backward". Let scenarios play out in your mind's eye, where you will have no limitations and the results are instantaneous:
* Think about what services/specialties you WANT to offer based on your personal gifts & interests
* Then consider the type of people you wish to have as clients
* Now consider the way those types of people would react to your methods of connecting with them (vs. marketing faceless services- your practice is about *you*, too!)
* What type of environment would they be comfortable receiving your services?

No need to get too entailed, but do write this list down as you perceive these elements on their behalf.

This concept works because it begins in familiar areas (knowing what areas you most want to specialize in and who you want to work with/for) and mirroring the elements you may be struggling with to "guess" how to attract those clients.

The resources will become apparent as needed. Trust your instincts and definitely cater to your driving desires for what you want *your* environment to be.

Hope this helps & feel free to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

All the best,
Kim

Kelly,
Great idea about a collection of the best of....
Personnally, I recently finished reading "Guide to Trance-formation" by Richard Bandler, and found it to be quite informative and helpful.
I know it may sound not nice for some guys here but I must be honest.
Jonathan Royle was the first person who introduced me to stahe hypnosis and hypnosis.
I remember when I ordered one of his first DVD's - recorded many years ago when he was about 20 I believe.
I do not know why, but it triggered my mind and curiosity and then I started to read, watch and listen more and more.
There is no need to place names like Cal Banyan, Richard Nongard etc because it's "must have".
As for now I have another hundreds of books to read and it is never ending work.
But Jonathan Royle's materials were IMHO very intriguing.
Sorry guys. I know some of you hate him. But I am honest. And has NO BUSINESS here.
THE FOUR AGREEMENTS...

Two things...

One, I agree with Dennis here. Richard Bandler's Guide To Trance-Formations is an excellent resource.

Second, (and I just posted this in another thread and ended up embarrassing myself by mistakenly placing my url in the hyperlink, so maybe this is my opportunity for redemption...) LOL is...

Craig Eubanks blog http://hypnosismarketingtips.com/

Definitely the best marketing resource for hypnotists out there that I know of, and it's Free!

Hello Geoff,

I know this thread is about resources for helping one’s practice and since I am offering none, here, at this moment, and I want to continue responding to subjects that are a little off topic, after this, I will email, blog, or start another discussion out of common courtesy, unless it’s ok to follow where ever things lead. Some like to follow along and others can’t stand when a thread goes off topic.

Kim, you bring up some wonderful points in your last reply to me here. Maybe we can email or start another thread on Projection, Perception, Karma, setting goals, quick strategies when faster is not always better, self belief, “what people think of us,” or what ever, they are all interesting subjects.

I was intrigued with your statement about karma when you said:

“My perception of "Karma" is as a Law of Three Vantage Points: Protagonist, Antagonist & Observer.”
I would like to understand that more.

Before hearing your perception of karma, my perception started out one way and went a totally different direction and frankly speaking, I don’t quite understand your take on karma and would love to discuss it further along with many of your other subjects, I find you fascinating.

My perception on karma as a simple person listening to the masses and being a Beatle lover and listening to John Lennon, I was ok with, “If you do good things, good things will come back to you, but I never felt good about the other side of that coin, “Instant Karma is gonna get you.” (like the song though)

I just emailed a meditation teacher I had when I was learning to overcome a reading disorder and I remembered that I really resonated with her version of karma, a version I had never heard but really liked. I couldn’t remember what it was, I will paste part of her email that she just sent back to me.

Her version of karma:
“I don't remember the exact definition of karma that I might have used in class with you, lol. I just talk, and it comes out different ways at different times, depending on who is in the room, and what they are seeking. So I'm not sure I can recreate it! But I will say that often I discuss karma in terms of energy momentums. It is like rolling a ball - it has to go a certain distance before it will naturally slow down and then stop, depending on how hard and fast we push it. The world, and our awareness, is like this huge energy matrix, and every thought and action has a 'push' to it, that creates a certain karma. Of course it has already come into being because of some prior karma also. So it is a matrix type energy thing, with different momentums pushing and pulling our awareness in different directions.

At the same time, we have free will, and the ability to choose our thoughts and actions outside of our karma/energy momentums, if we have enough self-awareness to see them. This is where meditation, mindfulness, and teachings like the Power of Now help us. They help us to see our previously unrecognized or unconscious mental and emotional habits. Once we see them, we can begin to choose otherwise - to break out of old karmas and create new ones. And eventually, to experience life 'beyond karma', you might say.”

Geoff,
Keep pushing your momentum in the direction you desire, the things that come from the energy you put into it will be of a similar kind. Even this post of yours is a push in a good direction.

Kim,
At the end of your last reply back to me on here, you said:
“So, uh… how do ya like me now? :P

More,

Steve
Hey all great ideas and tips so far - I appreciate that! I have been doing a lot of writing of affirmations which has helped me with my goals in the past. I also believe in "feeling the fear and doing it anyway" and have been working on setting up some workshops which in the past I probably never would have done. Currently I am reading Lynn Grodzki's book "building your ideal private practice" which was mentioned in a different post and I resonate true to her advice(definitely highly recommended).

In terms of working backwards I do think its beneficial to have the end in mind. If we can imagine what we want our goal to look like, with the end in mind, our subconscious minds will put the pieces together and we will see new opportunities. If you can hold the image in your mind of something that you'd like to create, you may not be able to draw it out, explain, or write it down immediately but in time I am more than certain you would be able to.

I think when you understand this kind of "stuff", which I am sure most of you do, it can be very discouraging because knowing you can choose a goal and have it manifest into reality, by focusing, taking action, and progressively moving forward, it comes down to which goal do you WANT to choose? See as Hypnotists we have many options; stage hypnosis, building a huge practice, building a huge online store, educating, etc etc. that I often times find myself wondering what is it that I REALLY want. I think it does come down to spending time in silence and allowing the ideas to come rather than looking for the ideas consciously.

Richard Bandlers book is on the list of the next book to read and I appreciate you, Dennis, for pointing out that its a good book to take a look at.

I appreciate all the reply's so far -

Thank you,

Geoff
