I have foolishly volunteered for a 45-minute presentation at a local Pasadena High School for career day -- in a week!

I can excerpt from my regular intro to hypnosis and hypnotherapy, but I don't have a lot of information about Hypnotherapy as a career.

Does anyone have facts and figures about the basics -- how many hypnotherapists are there in the US? California?  What percentage of people have used hypnotherapy?

Anything that might seem appropriate would be useful. If anyone has a similar presentation to email, or clips that might be useful for presentation, I'd be grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

Nothing is foolish about what you did, In fact is it an awesome opportunity, I did it myself at my nephews Elementary School, and It was so much fun.

All you have to do is to explain hoe hypnosis works and what are the benefits, remember they are students and they already creative, have few volunteers to do some induction in front of the students or have the entire class participation, then ask questions, for example ask them what they want to be when they grow up, then tell them would you like to be a post man or a police officer by pretending, or what ever they like, and let them use their imagination, setting them up for confidence and success, or they may say I want to have better grades, say grate, lets help you in having better grades from now and and do some relaxation and self esteem...

Before you know it every one will ask questions, make sure to give them some gifts with your Information, maybe magnets, pen, balloon.

I can't tell you that It will bring new clients, but it may, since I didn't get any clients from it, but what I got from it was experience in doing presentation and having fun at the same time.. I got teachers promising to see me, but that didn't happen, Instead I got a nice thank you card from all the student's, and It helped me with becoming an expert in doing presentations.

By the way, this are student's, they need to know how they can benefit from hypnosis, In my opinion they care less about facts and figures or how how many hypnotherapists are there in the US or California?

Go get them girlfriend :)

Hi Steph,

I have to second Doreen. If you get some of them excited enough about hypnotherapy to seriously consider it as a career, you have done your job. The facts and figures are secondary. They can get that from Google. Turning them onto a career where they help others is priceless.

Oops, I'm starting to sound like a MasterCard commercial!

Hey Stephanie,

I'm with Doreen- This is the kind of "foolishness" that builds practices and reputations. I recommend taking a lighthearted approach to this serious opportunity...

Keep in mind, if you excite the students they will discuss it with their parents, who may discuss it with co-workers and friends who may in turn... This could be the start of something big-- Be sure every one has fun and it starts with you--

There are approximately ten thousand certified hypnos in the US and many other thousands of hypnosis experts who earn their livings as motivational speakers, life coaches, and personal and sports trainers.

I recommend pointing out that the practice of hypnosis is a self-regulated, rather than a state-licensed, profession. Credible hypnosis certification organizations like the National Guild of Hypnotists and the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association have been training and certifying hypnotists for helping people become more effective since 1985 and 1989, respectively.
Like any profession, it is important to critically consider the qualifications and experience of the practitioner when making utilization decisions. Specialty certifications in useful sub-specialties are available from the major certifying organizations

HINT- You could dazzle em with some thing like:
People wonder if they are good candidates for hypnosis - "Let's find out.... Every one imagine a lemon, great -- now imagine slicing it - wonderful - now imagine holding it, and smelling it, and hear yourselves tasting it... Auuggggghhh.. How many of you tasted the lemon and how many of you produced digestive juices (saliva) Raise your hands--

If you tasted the lemon you are a natural and if you didn't, No Worries because a hypnosis practitioner can help you develop that skill. Certified hypnosis professional can help people use their minds and brains feel better, heal faster or generally be more effective.

Any questions-

Enjoy the applause -- Great Job!
Thanks, Doreen.
I have no freebies, unfortunately, except for Hypnobabies and I definitely don't want to be encouraging high school students to reproduce -- although I will mention that they can do it comfortably when it's time!
Because this is a public high school, I absolutely cannot hypnotise any students. Parents can get quite upset when their kids are hypnotised without their permission.... I will use some examples of suggestion.
As for the facts, they may not want them but it's not "learn about hypnosis" it's "learn about careers" and they're entitled to know things like how much studying they should do, how much they could earn, how much competition there is for the career and so forth, specific questions the organizers have asked.
I'm all set on the enthusiasm for hypno-success --
and I enjoy your sharing your own enthusiasm.
I will be giving them all flyers with my general info -- I too would be surprised and pleased if they or their parents or teachers become clients. Mostly I want to just practice talking to groups and spread a little general acceptance of hypnosis as a practical tool for health and success.....
thanks,

You are very welcome Stephanie,

OK, you said because this is a public high school, I absolutely cannot hypnotize any students. ( Parents can get quite upset when their kids are hypnotized without their permission) I personally had three teachers in the class, one was a substitute teacher, two or three other parents, one did presentation as an attorney, one as a physician and how exciting it is to work in what they work and what is the benefits, I did presentation for hypnotherapy, I had class participation, I asked them if they daydream? what they wanted to be when they grow up, and ect, and I asked them how would they want to know how hypnosis feels, letting them know it is exactly like daydreaming, only that with clients we have fun and do some positive changes and since they are not clients, we are going to use the idea, so they know how hypnosis feels, which is almost like daydreaming.

So did I hypnotize them? Not really, I guide them to use their imaginations, and in the end every single child wanted to be a hypnotist when they grow up.

By the, I gave each student a picture frame magnets to put on their refrigerator with my Name, phone number and the HypnoBirthing logo, and I have seen few of them until this day on their home refrigerator with their baby sister or brothers picture, back then, I believe each child took home two or three magnets to give away...

So you decide what is appropriate or not, as to the gifts, I think you are missing out the gift idea.

Doreen,
Hey, again. I think you had used the word "induction" earlier, which I won't do formally -- I will indeed engage their imaginations and give some waking suggestion. We know the difference is slight, but this way no one will mind.
And I think you misunderstood my point about the freebies -- I think they're great, in general, I just don't have any. My big mistake was not agreeing to do the talk -- but to do it with only 13 days notice and one week of that I was out of town on vacation. Should have thought about ordering goodies before I left.

I do have a few Hypnobabies magnets, but as these are high school students I don't think their parents will be needing the program and I really don't want to be encouraging them. I didn't realize you did Hypnobirthing. How wonderful!

Hmm. Maybe I'll design some magnets and/or mugs tomorrow and see what I can get done at Staples. I definitely have some CDs I can give to adults...... Thanks for encouraging me to think about that again.

PS - I don't get on here very often because it's a wonderful "time suck" as my husband says. Just was browsing today and came across some very funny videos through your link on laughter...... the guys on stage laughing had me clutching my stomach and shaking. It's timely because I do play "ha ha" in my presentation, just to demonstrate the connection between mind, body, mood and state of being.....
best wishes,

No problem Stephanie, what ever makes you feel comfortable, just so you know the definition of "Induction" is taking charge, taking initiation in engaging their imaginations, like the example with the lemon as Micheal suggested, by the way did you know that the meaning of induction does not mean hypnosis? It's true, It means greetings, inauguration, introduction of what ever subject you are talking about...

And hypnosis means= sleep-inducer, trance, deep trance, mesmerism, for example, when a person is In Love, they are In hypnosis :)

I believe your business card will be great too, all the best.

Thanks, Michael. Once again, you answered the exact question asked. I really needed some sort of statistic, so a guestimate of the number of certified hypnotherapists fits the bill. I know many of those are not full-time, but I've answered the question and can move on.

Definitely have planned the lemon exercise, maybe adding the balloon/bucket and elicting some examples of how attention and motivation affect their experiences -- comparing a favorite sport or school subject with one they like less and noting the differences attitude makes..... Hoping to leave them with a fun experience of their own imagination, an appreciation of how great hypnotherapy is if you're at all interested in how people's minds work, and possible a tip on how to improve their own experience by breathing deeply in times of stress.

Don't have pens or goodies but I do have a list of resources -- books, associations and a few of my favorite video links on you-tube. The list just happens to be on my letterhead, so .....

will let you know how it goes!

Stephanie, you're going to be amazing. And the disclaimer that "I can't hypnotize you, but I can show you a little bit about how your mind works" followed by suggestibility tests/deepeners of the type you've mentioned will allow you to put on a great demonstration without putting yourself at risk.
I just realized I never followed up to let you know how Career Day went -- It was awesome! I was a bit intimidated by the big school and the urban teens (I went to a public school but it was very, very long ago in a rather sheltered suburb) but they were mostly polite and attentive. 35 showed up for each session, which was a full-house. In each group there were 3-4 kids who were really interested and helped me keep things going.
I did the lemon exercise, the balloon and bucket and, as luck would have it, we were in the computer class so I was able to show them the dancing bear awareness test video. They LOVED that....
I had them write questions on index cards and then answered them -- my favorite was "Do you still use the yo-yo or is that a stereotype?" That one took me aback until I realized they would have no way of knowing what a pocket watch is!
I also got several questions along the line of "Can you teach me how to hypnotize a girl right NOW?"
All in all, very fun.
For my handout, I had a resource list with a few introductory books, some links (like the dancing bear) and my website and information.
It went so well I'm doing it again at another high school in April.
Haven't gotten any clients from it, but I think I opened some minds.
The very best part was that the computer teacher who hosted me actually volunteered in her introduction that she went to a hypnotist when she was in junior high to help her with math.
A lot to be grateful for.
Particularly your help and advice.
Thank you all.
Fantastic, Stephanie.

My son's high school had to cancel their career day because not enough professionals agreed to come. I was very disappointed. I do like your handout idea. If his school has career day next year I'll apply again.

I didn't see the bear until my 3rd viewing!
