Jack, there is an excellent chance hypnosis can help you reduce or eliminate the stuttering habit. There are a number of ways a certified hypnosis professional can go about helping you.

As you mentioned, some practitioners believe that regressing the client to the original causal event and releasing the negative emotions attached to it can relieve the symptoms.

I have found it helpful to aid my clients with this problem in desensitizing the triggers that provoke the stuttering response.

Teaching clients the skills that will enable them to be more relaxed, confident and less self-conscious can also be a big help. This usually involves learning some sort of self-hypnosis practice.

It will be helpful that you provide any practitioner you work with a full history of when the problem began, what has helped/what has made it worse etc.

It is possible to do a geographic search here on HypnoThoughts to find a hypnosis professional who is conveniently located for you. Good luck! Jim
Contact Gil Boyne on this sight. He has a video of sessions he conducted with a person who suffered from the same problem ... so the answer is yes, hypnosis can be very effective with stuttering.
Hi Jack,

Let's start with my experience. Although I am not qualified to treat stuttering, like many other hypnosis practitioners I've helped a wide range of stutterers stop stuttering in one to three sessions. I am talking about helping people who have suffered from severe stuttering and who have had years of various kinds of speech and psychotherapy without much improvement.

Please understand, I did not treat their "disorder"; rather, I helped these people stop stuttering based on my belief that stuttering is a learned behavior. I believe that stutterers have unknowingly conditioned themselves to stutter as a reaction to certain uncomfortable stimuli. I help by teaching clients how to go into a Jive Talking Zone - they are calm, cool and relaxed and the speaking is easy --

If you think of stuttering as learned behavior, it becomes apparent that you can replace stuttering with a new and improved behavior. It really can be that simple.

Hint-
According to The Stuttering Foundation of America, "The list of people who have overcome stuttering is long and contains some of the most famous names of the last century:

Boris Becker, professional tennis player

Joseph Biden, U.S. senator

Lewis Carroll, author

Winston Churchill, British prime minister

Johnny Damon, pro baseball player

Bo Jackson, pro football/baseball player

Samuel L. Jackson, actor

James Earl Jones, actor

Peggy Lipton, actress

Kenyon Martin, pro basketball player

Marilyn Monroe, actress

Julia Roberts, actress

Carly Simon, singer

Jimmy Stewart, actor

John Stossel, TV reporter

Mel Tillis, singer

Bill Walton, pro basketball player

Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer

Bruce Willis, actor

Tiger Woods, pro golfer"

These people clearly demonstrate that stuttering can be overcome and if they can do it -- You can do it...
