I have a new client coming and she told me on the phone she has been hearing voices. My plan is to interview her before deciding if hypnosis is the way to go. Any input? I have always been curious about handling this issue with hypnosis but will respect experts who tell me not to go there. Any input is appreciated

I would do an interview first and find out more about her. Se may be in a trauma situation.

All of us hear our own voice most of the time. The issue is where the voice is coming from.

I personally would work with her because I am a Medium myself and hear voices. The voices I hear are always about love and respect and they give me great insight into my client's situations.

Hearing voices in and by itself is neither good or bad. It is how the person feels and reacts to it. Hypnosis can probably help with this situation. The issue is are you comfortable with it?

I have personally developed ways to work with people such as this (in trauma) with successful outcomes, in my own practice.
I wouldn't doing anything without at least speaking to her GP.
Hello Fern,

I believe you asked me this question during my presentation at the Hypnosummit. I remember thinking... "Great, throw an easy question at me"...

I see there are all kinds of views here for you to pick and choose from and allow me to give you the #1 most important, unconditional must do piece of advice.

HAVE THIS WOMAN SEE A LICENSED MEDICAL PRACTITIONER AND GET A REFERRAL BEFORE EVEN THINKING OF WORKING WITH HER.

By the way, this does not mean to just throw her to just any psychiatrist that may/may not just drug her up to shut her up. There are actually a large number of excellent licensed practitioners out there, you just have to look for them.

Now... The second most important piece of advice is to ask yourself if you have the experience to work with whatever issue this turns out to be.

If it turns out that she is has something very serious going on such as schizophrenia then you want to be very honest with yourself and ask yourself if you have the skill set to work with this.

That being said, I have worked with clients that heard voices before (with a referral from their psychiatrist) and although the approach differed with different clients, my main approach is to assist them by utilizing sub-modalities (teaching the client how to realize that she was in control of the *voices* by turning them up/down and pushing them back and closer again etc. so that they are able to realize that they are in fact in control of and therefore, creating the voices.

I then I follow up with parts work so that they can hear the messages that they are trying to tell themself. The most important thing is helping people to realize that these *voices* are simply their own. They are not separate.

And again, every client is different and you need to know that you have the skill set and experience to handle any curve balls that are thrown at you. There's absolutely no shame in being out of your element and to this day, I still refer certain clients out to someone else if I am not totally confident that I can help them.

As I tell my students, when in doubt... refer them out...

All the best,

Kevin Cole
Thanks Steve, I appreciate your input and agree with the awesomeness of this forum!

Hello Fern,
I haven’t been following this thread diligently, but some of the bits and pieces that I see, look good.
Trusting your gut to know you could help is a good thing in itself that helps. Not getting stuck in holding on to the first decision that developed, is even more huge of an innate wisdom.

The term scared you into backing off, is still the great gift of asking, listening, and trusting one’s intuition or gut…..not everyone has recovered those gifts.

I worry in the most healthiest of ways about something I remember about teaching self hypnosis to people. Granted, I have been corrected before on things I remember learning, or maybe a better term would be, I have been exposed to more views and a better understanding of something else that I remembered learning, corrected by someone on hypnothoughts and it opened my eyes even further, I think it was Fable who opened my eyes. A community of hypnotherapists who care is a wonderful guidance system and when it is as good as this community, has a tendency to build in it’s own safety and security….it’s a wonderful place to be right, and not so right, and learn.

Anyway, what I was referring to that I was taught about teaching self hypnosis to people is this:

If people are coming to you for help and you notice that their self talk, their thinking is all negative, you want to correct that before you teach them self hypnosis. Self hypnosis is a great tool in the hands of a positive thinking person, it re-enforces positive suggestions, but for the negative thinking or negative self talking person, when they are hypnotizing themselves, their suggestions get worded in the negative which may have a tendency to re-enforce the behavior they are hating at the moment.

On the other hand, EFT is good, it is about acceptance, forgiveness, and awareness and the language deals with the reality of things and self acceptance, which also works to remove the fear of dealing with things and empowers a person.

That being said, I am glad you referred out.
And who knows, maybe you can still work with her and the doctor.

What a great teaching and learning this thread is.

Enjoy,
Steve
I would agree with an outside referral; then once there is a medical and/or psychological clearance (no evidence of mental illness or medical reason), you would probably be cleared for take off.

As hypnotists, we utilize an induction of hypnosis, and use methods and learned principles to help clients discover their inner creative abilities to develop positive thinking and feeling and to transform undesirable habits and behavior patterns. We don't treat mental illness.

Hmmmm.

Hi Fern,

I am not qualified or legally allowed to give medical, psychological or legal advice. So, what follows is NOT medical, psychological or legal advice.

This could be an opportunity to develop a relationship with a local licensed mental health professional because if there is any chance of being accused of "practicing without a licensed" it is a good idea to practice safe* hypnosis.

Remembering my caveat: I am not qualified or legally allowed to give medical, psychological or legal advice and depending on where you live and practice and the personality of local law enforcement, I do not think you'd be accused of "practicing without a license" for asking about the nature of the voice(s). Now, if he or she is getting messages from Satan -- Refer them to a licensed health care provider immediately! If client reports hearing mom's voice reminding him or her to wear a sweater or take their umbrella - a referral is probably is not necessary...

Newbies-

I trust you are using an "Intake/Practitioner-Client Agreement" that contains basic client info and cleary express the services that are and are not being offered.

My Intake/Practitioner-Client Agreement contains:

I understand that this consultation is not meant to diagnose or treat any disease, but rather, it is intended to provide information and education that will promote feeling better, healing faster and generally being more effective. It is designed to give me insight and tools into my innate healing potential and guide me into being more effective in helping myself.

I also realize that this consultation is not a substitute for conventional medicine and I have been encouraged to seek the advice of a licensed health care provider should I choose to with regard to treating me for specific medical or psychological problems

Michael E.

PS -- * Condoms are not necessary for practicing safe hypnosis...
