The discovery channel rolled out a show called Deception with Keith Barry. The episode that aired tonight centered on hypnosis. I only caught the end of the show where he attempts to create a sleeper agent.

Did anyone catch the show? What were your thoughts?

I'm searching for a place it may have appeared online in entirety.

Meanwhile, here is one of the promo videos ...

Keith Berry has done some other stuff with black ops hypnosis (as he calls it)  He is a good entertainer, just like derren brown is.

Hi John,

I saw him give a TED talk once. I found him entertaining, and what little I saw of this show reminded me of Derren Brown.

If he's like Derren Brown, then we all need to be aware of his work, because it's a matter of days before we start getting the monthly posting here that reads, "Can you teach me how to do what Keith Barry does?"

I wouldnt worry about trying to learn what he does, its like Derren Brown its not hypnosis.

Actually, he does use NLP techniques in his performance. Its just that unless you know your subjects or can pre-condition them, actual application can be a crap shoot in front of a camera.

Here is one of his more famous appearances from several years ago:

I watched the show.  It's basically stage hypnosis, street hypnosis, and some mentalism.  He did a good job, but nothing revolutionary that I saw.

Entertaining and fun, I'm going to watch future episodes to see if he builds on this into anything new.

I watched all of it an enjoyed it, He said that everyone was unsuspecting. But im pretty sure that if he really did some of the street hypnotism that he did the discovery chanel would be sued.  Plus the last subject on the show I saw a few weeks ago on the Conan oBrien show as a "randomly selected" member of the audience so that made it loose credibility

Deception with Keith Barry “used Car Salesman” will play tonight 6/01/11 on discovery channel.

I am going to record the show, watch it and check back in with this thread.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Yours in Health,

Yeah, definitely some NLP in there too.  Forgot to mention that one.  I don't know about "never achieving with standard hypnosis" though, because that requires a definition of "standard."  I get your point though.

The interesting challenge with NLP is that once you've trained in it, you can see it everywhere. Last night I watch "The King's Speech" and saw it being used everywhere, especially in the first half. Were the writers, director and producers consciously using NLP? I doubt it.

I haven't seen Keith Barry's show, yet, but I have seen Darren Brown. As a moderator on another forum I've seen people explain how DB used NLP. Unfortunately for them, I've also been a member of The Magic Castle for decades, and it's very clear to magicians that DB uses magic tricks (along with editing) to give the impression that he uses NLP to achieve some of his effects. He uses the idea of NLP as what magicians call "misdirection," so you won't look for his real techniques.

And when I try to explain this, some NLP practitioners get very upset because they want it to be NLP and not simply an illusion.

NLP people see NLP in everything...  Hypnotists see hypnosis in everything and Magicians see Magic methods in everything...  Isn't it nice to be all 3!..  Aaah the things you can do when you combine it all together... We will have to meet at the Castle and have a drink and share some war stories...
