Hey all,

I was just wondering what you all think of him. I think he's brilliant and very clever but I was just wondering if you like him too.

(I'm not sure how famous he is in the US but just search him in youtube and he'll pop up.)

I love the Oscar quote. Thank you for that. And I believe that all of us want to be a "celebrity" in some form. Maybe not in the traditional sense of the word, but in our own circle of friends. I mean, no matter what anyone does, whether it be hypnosis, magic, mentalism, or even flipping burgers at Mcdonalds, I believe we all strive to be the best we can be at whatever it is that we do. The guy that's flipping burgers is doing something, whether it be something he/she says or does that makes him/her stand out so that others will mention his name when in his absence. Even the quiet guy that does'nt say a word to anybody has an agenda. He's quiet because, 1). he's shy, and 2). he wants to put off that "mysterious" vibe. It's just unfortunate that for that type of person being shy and not saying a word is not putting out that "mysterious" vibe. So, I believe all of us here are looking for that "celebrity" status, just on different levels that mean something special to us. Hypnosis is a form of entertainment, even the therapy part of it, is it not? If one person comes to you for hypnotherapy and you positively help them and they refer you to a friend who then comes to you, you've then built yourself a reputation. And as you gain more cllients, you've built yourself a "celebrity" type status within your town, city, state, country, or world. It's like I always say about guys that start bands: (I've been in this position, I am a drummer and have been in several bands) There are two reasons why guys (mainly guys) start a band. 1. To make money and 2. to get girls. Once that's been established, then the "celebrity" factor comes into play. Anyway, I kind of got off topic here, but I still believe that the real "magic" behind what Derren, or any celebrity for that matter is, what is said about that person when they aren't around. If a person can generate talk about themselves by other people that don't even know them when they aren't around is, to me the ultimate form of flattery and in Derren's case, the ultimate Trick of the Mind.

Ryan, i think you are really onto something here, Derren's Mind Control series was run on the Sci Fi channel here in the US a couple of years back and I found it very entertaining. He has created a msterious personna that a lot of people want to believe is the "real deal." After all, if he can go about making complete strangers do his bidding, why can't we all? The term "celebrity" stems from the notion that the person is "celebrated" for representing or symbolizing something we want.

No doubt he has a lot of skill in magic, mentalism, hypno/nlp, but isn't the real "trick" building the cult of personality, which can truly worth its weight in gold. As Oscar Wilde stated "the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about."

I'm beginning to think that maybe, just maybe, the real magic is taking place right here on Hypnothoughts. Here we are, a bunch of hypnotists and aspiring hypnotists, discussing Mr.Brown, and yet he's not even here... or maybe he is? However it may be, we are talking about a guy, who for some of us isn't even in the same country, and whether or not what he does is "real". To me that's magic. When you talk about and think about someone else absent from your presence, you can be assured that person has made an impact, whether good or bad, on you. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with discussing Derren and his work. We are all here because of our interests, and for some of you, your line of work. I think it's healthy to discuss and debate what he does. But, I think if Derren were, (or maybe is?), reading this he could only sit back and have himself a bit of a chuckle. That to me is the ultimate Trick of the Mind. :)

I have read one of his books Tricks of the Mind and viewed a few of his DVDs..
I wasn’t impressed enough to sing his praises.
He is a very good magician. I do wonder about his street hypnosis. I agree with Antonio and I suspect that there my be a “stooge” factor in his bits.

Yours in Health,

Hi!

If you like Derren Brown then you must see this 8 parts / 9minutes long show

Derren Brown-

I agree with James- I love his stuff but look out for the mentalism tricks/paper swaps/camera cuts. He's a brilliant performer, but hypnotism's not his main thing.

BUT- I frequently read his blog, which is brilliant (if not primarily written by him). http://derrenbrown.co.uk/blog/ There's hypnotism stuff on there occasionally, albeit not how tos.
I just wanted to ask you Jonathan, do you not believe in hypnosis? I may be misinterpreting your DVD title.
