I am very interested in the phenomenon of lucid dreaming. I know several people who can regularly manipulate thier dreams.

I have never really set about experimenting with it before myself but then, a couple of nights ago, I had a very vivid dream in which i was flying. It was very exhilarating and I woke up with a wonderful sense of energy. However, someone then told me that a flying dream is very significant in that it is often the first step in developing lucid dreaming abilities. Does anyone have experience of this? I am very curious...

Flying dreams are extremely common, and in themself, I'm not sure they have any connection to lucid dreaming in themself, but because it is not something that we can do in everyday life, people are often alerted to the fact that this must be a dream.

One of the reasons why I learned lucid dreaming as a teaneager in the sixties, was because I had a flying dream, and wanted to have more control over it.

I had noticed that sosmetimes I became aware that I was dreaming, and then as soon as I realised, I would wake up. so I practiced telling myself before gopign to sleep, that when I realised I was dreaming, I would stay in the dream, and be able to take charge of the dream, and do what I wanted. (this was before I had ever heard of, lucid dreaming and so I imagined I was inventing the technique).

Eventually I got the hang of it, and wrote an essay about it for my english homework. the teacher said I had made it ip, and that people couldn't control thier dreams, he gave me a poor mark, because we were suposed to be relating a true story.

My ability to control the dreams diminished after that!

Over the years I have dipped in and aout again, when the interest has arose, particularly because I do like flying dreams, and also to banish people or things from my dream if I don't want them there. But I have never recapture the skill i had back then before I was told it was impossible.

It can be a sign of 'astral travelling' when you have a flying dream.

i remember as a kid, me and my brother flying around our house,
then outside, it was great.
when we woke in the morning...we both told mum,
and it turned out we had the same dream...coincidence?
Thank you, Fable and Chris.

Wow! Fable, your experience reminds me of Ken Robinson's TED Talk 'Do schools kill creativity?' discussed in our Hypnotic Creativity group.

I am going to experiment tonight! I wonder where I;ll go? The landscape in my last dream was not somewhere I recognised...
Sophie,
Flying in my dreams is common, it has been as far back as I can remember.
Lucid dreams occasionally.

Michael
Hi Sophie,

I very rarely have flying dreams, but regularly have lucid dreams. I am always in control of those and when tire of the specific dream, end it immediately by stating enough and getting out. I often can re- enter back into a dream that I feel ended before I was ready for the end, too.

But flying dreams, no, must be afraid of the flying dreams - that I won't be able to return- because I always end those immediately. My husband flies all the time, though, and rarely has lucid dreams.
Flying dreams are very often a precursor for lucid dreaming, a dream state in which we are aware we are dreaming and can manipulate the outcome of the dream. Even in a dream state, most of us are aware that we can't fly in normal life, thus on some level a flying dream likely coincides with dreaming lucidly.
Interpretation of flying dreams is simple. Something is generally going RIGHT in our lives! Occasionally, we may be flying to avoid something,
Once in a while, a flying dream will not go so well, such as when you can't take off or you lose altitude or something is in your path and you can't fly past or through it. These dreams tell us that we are frustrated or feel burdened, or that that we are not confident in our abilities. In these cases, re-evaluate your goals and find ways around anything that may be hampering your progress.
So nothing to be frightened about...it's just telling us what we probably already know.
I am a bit wary of interpreting the symbols in our dreams, much better just to be aware, and if dreaming lucidly, to take charge of the dream, and facilitate it as you would facilitate an interactive guided fantasy. observe what is happening and develop a creative, metaphorical way to steer the dream in a positive, usefull, enjoyable productive direction.

As in guided fantasy, the work you do in your dreams, can have a very profound effect on personal development.

Yes Adrian, there are many things you can do to increase the number and quality of lucid dreaming. One well tested way, is simply to do a little self hypnosis each night with suggestions, that while you are sleeping, you will have a dream, and that at a certain point in the dream, you will realise that it is a dream, and will decide to continue sleeping. (this may take several nights to several weeks for some people to have it's effect), the most common problem is waking up as soon as you realise it is a dream, so in the suggestions you give yourself, you turn this around, so that realising you are dreaming, becomes the signal to carry on sleeping and dreaming with awareness.

Once you can do, this, congratulate yourself.

a next useful step (for some people) is to do a reality test to make sure it is a dream (this makes it safer) .... so decide to float up about a foot above the ground. If you can do this, then it is definately a dream. confirm to yourself that it is a dream, and that you are in charge. congratulate yourself for getting this far.

Now start practicing simple techniques, like deciding who or what to bring into your dream, (or dismiss) . what theme, what actions to take place...
get a sense of really being in charge.

Each morning, keep a note of your successes, and each night, remind yourself how well you are doing, and reinforce the self hypnotic suggestions, becoming more and more specific in prescribing your dream scenario, as you gain confidence.

These are just a few thoughts on the subject.

Love and hugs,

I have dreams that I am "flying" around a room. i jump from the floor to the wall near the ceiling and just look down on everything. i have had a few unintentional lucid dreams where I KNOW it is a dream and I say in the dream "well this is just a dream" I had a dream with my granddaughter whom I haven't seen in months and I wanted to give her a hug. I said " I am going to give you a hug even though I know this is just a dream-maybe you will feel it"
I also have dreams that I am driving a car that isn't on the ground. Maybe I just need to be more grounded lol.
I have loved reading all about your dreams and thoughts about flying dreams. Thank you so much. Since my original dream, I have been experimenting a little along the lines of Fable's advice...

I did go back into my original dream and I had a wonderful experience. It was really powerful. I am smiling as I think about it now... I will practice over the next few nights... Ths feels very exciting. Thank you!
Hi Dawn,
I was just reading around and your dream reminded me of some flying dreams I have had. I didn't even know what lucid dreaming was and haven't really looked into it....but the flying dreams are some of my favorites.

I wasn't one to remember very many dreams most of my life, I now do choose to allow myself to remember and enjoy any dreams that are solution-dreams or enjoyable dreams.

My first flying dream started out in a room. I through a small pillow across the room like a Frisbee and the next thing I know I'm following it headed toward the top of the wall across from me and the ceiling. I closed my eyes for fear of crashing into the wall and when I re-open them, I'm flying back in the other direction. I immediately know I am dreaming and I have an awareness that it is a dream and I have some control and I head straight for the other wall without closing my eyes and again, the next thing I know I'm flying back in the other direction.
I wasn't able to make that first last too much longer than a few more times.

And then in other dreams I realize it is a dream again and by concentrating in the dream I start flying into the air and soar and know it is a dream and I can't get hurt and my proof is that I'm flying.

I have tried to have flying dreams a couple of times and was able to....but I'm not sure how and it doesn't seem to be as important as getting a goods night sleep naturally.

In some non flying dreams I am aware it is a dream. I make attempts to stay in the dream instead of letting it end on it's own.

Whether it's all an illusion of the dreaming process....it is really cool.

Just thought I'd share...I would love to absorb some good tips, but I don't seem to be willing to mess or pursue with anything I know now.

One more thing if you do read this, (I just browsed your profile page and....). HMI was a wonderful year of learning for me. I haven't stopped reading and learning since 2007. I'm now reading a book titled Taproots by William Hudson O'Hanlon, he studied with Erickson. It's more in the direction of solution orientated therapy. I think I have found my direction. I didn't attend HMI to start up my own business, I took the course because it was something I had never heard of....to be able to make changes....how incredible is that? I always thought we were stuck with who we were....can you imagine my joy.

As I will start up my practice as part time, I was waiting and hoping that I would get a sign for a direction, my niche so to speak and, "Bingo," it has arrived. To take the skills and talents that created the issues and use them to resolve the presenting issues. Using patterns of behavior for resolving the issues that are wanting to be changed.

Keep me posted on your move to California. Doreen is a wonderful person and I just saw Leah last Saturday at HMI, he was a good buddy while I was there, I hadn't been back there in two years, I went for an AHA bookkeeping little seminar, it was just what I was looking for.

Maybe I'll suggest some dreaming thoughts tonight.

Enjoy,
Steve
I use to have flying dreams where I would be flying way above house tops but the moment I would realize that I was up there, so to speak, I'd start to fall and that falling motion would wake me and I'd feel really sick to my stomach, however over the years I have been able to 'train myself" so now when I have them which I still do and I LOVE them, I know that I'm dreaming but I can control them perfectly. About a year ago I had one where I was going down the street talking to two friends except they were walking and I was flying beside them but as I was flying I was weaving in and out of the light poles that were all along the road. I also can now have the ones where I'm flying way up and it doesn't bother me. Matter of fact I had one a few nights ago but sadly when I woke I couldn't remember any details other then I was flying and it was above rooftops again. I hope one day to be able to purposely astral travel to a place where I can see something going on and then verify it, as I've read where this is actually possible.
