I have had a couple of clients say they were considering using an electronic cigarette before our sessions, and asked if that was a bad idea. I use a completely stop smoking HT approach, not step-down.
I would be interested if any of you feel there is any advantage at all to using an electronic cigarette, or using nicorette gum, or any other NRT for that matter, while utilizing hypnosis.

I would not support them using something like that. However if they feel the need and you push for them to not use this method, it may do more harm than good for their success. I would suggest that it was not necessary and that hypnosis would be all they need. If they still wanted it then it may be conter-productive. Maybe not but what they believe is their reality.

Permalink Reply by Kelley Woods on October 21, 2011 at 12:18pm I'll take a different perspective on this: too many times, people (including those in this profession) see hypnosis as an alternative...an alternative to traditional, Western, pharmaceutical, etc., approaches. I have found that hypnotic intervention often works great in conjunction with other methods.
While it is ideal for a client to make an appointment for smoking cessation, come in, spend some time in hypnosis and then walk out the door, a non-smoker...life isn't always ideal. I prefer to accept the client, warts (Volcanoes) and all. Chances are that I can add to their belief system that hypnosis is an additional and complementary tool for creating success. My job is to help them help themselves, however that happens and with whatever tools they choose.
I have helped several young adult clients who also use electronic cigs; they like the ability to "choose" to use the cigs socially while finding the freedom to let go of tobacco via hypnosis. From follow-up contact, I find that most of them eventually ditch the electronic cigs once they give themselves permission to use them. Funny, eh?!
Permalink Reply by Joseph Gionti on October 21, 2011 at 2:28pm I would stress to the client that it will not be needed. However, isn’t the goal of the client (and you as the hypnotist) that they quit smoking? I would not tell a weight loss client to stay away from carrot sticks simply because I personally don’t like the taste of them. Therefore, although I might question their devotion to quitting in the first place, tell the client that if their goal is to kick the smoking habit, they can do whatever they need to do if they feel it will ease the process…even of it means puffing on an electronic cigarette.

I stopped smoking regular cigarettes about 5-6 months ago and use an electronic cigarette. For what it is worth-I can't smoke regular cigarettes anymore. I can't stand doing it (I have tested this). I never ever would have believed I would develop an aversion to regular cigarettes because I loved them like a fiend and totally chain smoked. For what I wanted to stop about smoking-the smell, the ashes, fire, coughing, it has been a miracle. For what I wanted to keep-the social ritual, the feeling, the tactile part of it-it has worked out great for me. It adds flavors and scents that have been even better than what was available with regular cigarettes. People actually comment on how much they like the air freshener I use <g> THAT never happened with reg cigs. I can have 180 different flavors and am usually vaping espresso, green tea, blueberry, coconut. I can choose the nicotine amount from 36, 24, 18, 12, 10, 8, 4 and even 0. I like that I control the amount of nicotine and flavor. I can't even imagine going back to regular smoke cigarettes again.
I never suffered! The transition was effortless. I have friends who tried and hated the gum and patches were useless to them. If you want to smoke-chewing might not be much help at all.
I love it and think it is bloody brilliant. I can use 0 nicotine and it doesn't matter. I get everything, all the feeling regardless. Is it a placebo? Oh heck yeah-and it is a placebo that totally works for me.
If they dissapeared tomorrow Id miss them but I'd not be tempted to go back to regular cigarettes. I couldn't go more than a few hours without a regular cigarette before and now if I couldn't have an ecig for days it is no big deal. It is a pleasure now instead of a NEED. That just blows my mind. I couldn't have every imagined it. I do it now because I like it not because I must have it to function. What a difference!
gentle day,
Lisa

Permalink Reply by Michael Ellner on October 21, 2011 at 6:28pm I agree with Kelley, James and Walter-
I often ask clients what is the best way to reach their goals and I respect and act on what they tell me -- That said the goal is to help the client find healthy, creative ways to make the unwanted habit unnecessary.
Permalink Reply by James Hazlerig - HypnosisAustin on October 21, 2011 at 8:12pm I never encourage my clients to use NRT or pharmaceuticals, but it they want to use them, I don't refuse to work those clients. I always tell them I believe in stacking the deck in our favor.
The only downside is that if your client uses NRT and hypnosis, there's an excellent chance that he'll later say, "I don't know if the hypnosis really did any good. I was using NRT at the same time."

Yes, a lot of people don't realise that an electronic cig can just be for the habit of sucking on a white stick and can be without nicotine.
I feel that if a client has a very strong habit of wanting to put something to their mouths and is feeling like THAT part of the habit is impossible to break, then why not try the electronic one?? Agree with so many of you in the fact that it is about flowing with the client with the one goal of STOPPING SMOKING COMPLETELY AND EASILY.
