I am currently helping a lady to eliminate an excessive amount of weight, 180Kg (almost 400 pounds), and we are having great success.

My question is, does anyone know a technique for the excessive skin that would normally be left behind after losing this much weight?

You can add the suggestion that the skin will shrink with the weight... not sure if it will work but you can give it a go.

Losing that amount of weight will leave a massive amount of skin. I would receommend she has it surgically removed.

There are some physical toning exercise programmes available that she may be able to make use of as part of her new life style. Any exercise is of course health related. One that I propose to people is the use of Kettlebells with correct tuition on their use. I have used them myself but I don't have a photo I can share :-) There are however programmes for all levels of fitness and health available.

Hi

Yes I agree with Jay here that surgery is quite likely due to the amount of weight you are talking about and the most realistic way of dealing with this.

With smaller amounts of weight though surgery may not be required if the weight is lost gradually AND the person exercises and build muscle.

See this link for more info http://www.bodyfatguide.com/LooseSkin.htm

One thing to make sure is that she doesn't end up sabotaging her success because she is concerned about excess skin and a possible operation. Most people don't like the thought of having to have an op so it is possible she may create a conflict that if she continues to lose weight she will need an op.

When she reaches her target make sure she gives you a testimonial and if she is ok with it notify your local media and then be prepared for the phone to ring!

Hi, Congrates on helping a client drop 400 lbs. I have been involved in weight loss for over thirty years and have never come close to that amount of weight loss. I won't accept accept cilents so large because once they drop the weight the loose skin problem happens and I have never seen a method for helping tighten the skin. Good luck and please keep me posted on your progress. Don

Hi Ian.

As I have understood it - there is a tecnique where you can code the muscles around the belly-part of the body to be working actively.

One day when googling around concerning Gastric Band Hypnosis I saw a hypnotist somewhere in the USA who wrote that he didn't even have to give hypnosis where the "band surgery" was done - he just code the muscles around the belly-part of the body to be working actively.

Later I will be trying this treatment myself (sometime in the end of may month) then I can return to tell you what I have experienced.

Thanks Marianne, I look forward to hearing your results and finding out more about this technique.

;-)

Hi Ian, I do agree with the replies regarding exercise and I worked with a lady who had lost 8 stone and put it all back on again! it turned out that it was the way she looked with all the excess skin we did a lot of work with body image which went some way to helping her. It did make me very aware that I needed to address this when working with clients who needed to have a very large weight loss.  I am working with another client who to date has lost about 9 stone but from the start we worked not only with her eating habits but her exercise she attends 9 classes a week doing Zomba although I would imagine that there is some excess weight she looks great and I notice that her arms are very toned.  I do not want to state the obvious but when I work with clients I suggest that exercise is their time, time for them and they enjoy their time and so on.  I do however give all my clients CD's to take away and reinforce the therapy given and I record them live so that they are tailored to each client and what they want to achieve.

From the feedback that I receive I have clients say to me that when they are swimming, in the gym, doing their classes that they hear my voice saying this is my time etc.  very powerful stuff.

Would be great to hear from Marianne about this technique as I think everything helps.

There is a treatment called Thermage which is supposed to help excess skin tightening using laser technology, but I'd imagine it's pretty expensive.
