the Free Hypnosis Social Network
Hi Everyone,
I have just finished my first conference this weekend on hypnotherapy, having one of the best weekends ever. I had great success doing trance work and deepening, but when coming home to my wife, I was having a little trouble. I understand it is more difficult to work with family. I don't think it helped the situation that I could not get her to stop smiling every time I talked.
I believe that at the conference, we were all there for the same thing making it easier to achieve a deeper trance. My wife on the other hand, I was unable to get her into a relaxing situation. She told me when her head drops forward, it hurts her neck which caused her to keep lifting her head back up. Also I mentioned at one point her hands and feet felt like lead, which caused them to become very heavy, but when trying for arm levitation, I could not get her mind off the idea of lead, which caused her hand not to move.
At the start I went through what hypnosis is and removed any misconceptions trying to make her feel more comfortable, I also did two convincers (book and balloons, hands stuck together) which worked perfectly.
I know one mistake I did was after a slow inductin did not go to plan, I tried a more rapid hand drop induction. The problem here I believe is that I did not explain what I was about to do and scared her half to death.
Does anyone have any advice as to where I may be able to change a few things? Let me know if I need to add more detail as to what I tried.

Hehe, breathing, I think I should have got her to do a bit more of that. Makes a lot of sence to get her to sit in a more comfortable position. I had her back sitting straight up in the chair.
I will be having another go tonight, I may try a longer induction with more breathing involved, probably Elman.
Thanks for the advice Justin.
Hi Glen,
When working with the family, I always go with the breathing exercise to help them to relax and then do deepening. When someone starts to laugh, I use their laughter as a comforter and relaxer asking them something like 'its okay to laugh cos laughter is a medicine for many things... but as you laugh, I would like you to notice any other feelings you might be getting while you feel the way you feel... maybe a sense of comfort or maybe a sense of relaxation...' (or something like that) which takes their mind off their laugh and start to look for that other feeling.
Her hands and feet feeling like lead says that you can hypnotise her. So all you need to do is stay confident and you can explain to her while she is in a comfortable state of mind and body if you decide to change tactics.
I hope this helps.

PS: I dont believe working with family is as hard as it is made to believe. If anything they are easy cos you can tell'em off if they don't behave lol (just joking).
Lol the breathing advice was for you.... LOL... Just take it slow you will be fine....

Agrees with Justin.. Spouses are the hard ones.. especially when your pumped from a class. Do go around the neck thing.. with having her lie down on a couch .. bed etc.. work with it. Give it time .. Have patience... Don't fret... Breathe!

Sorry, I haven't had time to read the other responses.
The key here is utilisation. If she is laughing use that to create a pleasurable experience. If her feet feel like lead, go for a leg stick and then whole body stick. If you then want levitation you can say that her subconscious will select one arm to release from the whole body stick, which it will release when you click your fingers.
Why not have her sit somewhere comfortably, where her head will be able to rest fine behind her (e.g. tall backwards-leaning chair)?
Hope that helps.
Glenn, you are doing a lot better then you realise. If you read your messages here and write down all what you managed and the techniques you used to bring an outcome (maybe not what you hoped for but you had an outcome), you will realise what you have achieved with your wife. I remember when I was training and always worked myself up to trying too hard. What I learnt to do since then is to do my breathing exercise before seeing a client or doing a training session. It works every time or even try switch technique on yourself before starting any session.
