hi hypnothoughts

i have no previous hypnosis experience except reading dave elmans book and a book by tad james.

i think i have enough knowlege from elmans book in particular to start my experiences.

i am interested in studying hypnosis but i am very opposed to spending money on a 3 day course.

i am 28 and have a wife and daughter but from dave elmans book i have gathered that family members and friends are not a good place to get experience, how did you guys start?

im kinda embarrassed about failing as well.

any tips would be really appreciated as i really want to study hypnosis

Even though people say don't do it, I started with my wife. The only reason to not do it is because they don't know you as a hypnotist and therefore may not take you seriously. If they don't take you seriously they may not follow your directions and therefore may not respond well and you may get frustrated. One way around this is to tell your wife you would like to practice. Tell her that you are not going to hypnotize her but you would like her to play along and imagine what it would be like to be hypnotized. Tell her you just want to practice saying the words.

The key is to get her to relax and just follow your instructions. If she does follow your instructions and “imagine” what it would be like to be hypnotized she will go into hypnosis, even if it is only a light state. From there each time you do hypnosis together she will go deeper and respond better.

You should also “practice” your pre-talk with her. This will all get into her subconscious and have an effect.

Good luck, have fun and practice on anyone willing to listen to you.

Joel, Guess what?

Almost every hypnotist I know was there where you are right now... I know, its a nightmare and you have that feeling in you that you really really wanna do this and then the other feeling that keeps screaming about failing yada yada yada...

It reminds me of an old story about a young kid talking to his grandfather and his grandfather tells him that within all of us there is a battle going on between 2 wolves... one that helps you and the other wants to harm you. the kid asks, "Grandpa, which wolf wins?

The Grandfather replies... "The one that YOU FEED"

All I am saying is this, there should be no limiting beliefs... and MOST IMPORTANTLY... Failing is GOOD FOR YOU...

Yup, its GOOD... Its an Opportunity to learn something knew, see where you went wrong and start over smarter and better than before... I did... I still do!

Nike - Just Do it!... you have the knowledge now talk about it, friends, family, pillows and teddy bears... whoever, practice and just do it!

Trust me when I say this... you will NEVER regret it :)

All the best in your successes and failures,

Eternal Smiles

I've had lots of resistance from family and friends and so my mentor suggested I just go out and get volunteers, so I devised a brochure, and with consent, have dropped it into a few buinesses locally, and from one particular business I am getting a 50% interest primarly based on feedback from those who've already come to see me. This has bosltered my confidence tremendously. I've found lots of the community very confronted or challenged by what I am doing, but those who are responding to my advertising are coming to me on a different basis, ie voluntarily and with interest vs. suspicion. This is also making my name known in the local community.
Practice on yourself! You can make some recordings to listen to; that will not only give you experience in creating hypnotic patter, it will help you develop your tone and pacing. Plus, you will be the benefit of your own suggestions! I suggest you study up on formulating suggestions.

There are nothing as powerful as personal testimonials, including your own...

Have fun! Kelley
I have to agree, one of my best friends is my personal mp3 recorder, and I pace up and down as I move into the mood and record my "visualised" sessions.

Good for you that you realize there is enough in the Elman book to make you a better hypnotist than 95% of the rest. Good that you realize the key now isn't more training and books, it's practice and experience.

I'm going to give you the secret of how to get practice, step by step with the exact wording.

Excited? Ready? So am I. Here we go.

Go to a local bar and walk up to some people. "you guys look like you're having fun, my name is Joel, I'm a performer, would you like to experience something amazing today"? And off you go.

As for the fear, go see a hypnotist for that part. I have gotten quite a few hypnotists over the hump by zapping the fear right out of their system.

Joel,
If you are serious about pursuing hypnosis, get live training. I understand you are opposed to spending money on it, but understand that you get what you pay for. Other than that.. spend your time digging into the archived discussions here. There are comments and advice from some of the foremost hypnosis talent on the planet today, on a variety of topics.

Some of the greats of yesterday started with what they read on the back of a comic book (this was before they were called graphic novels) so what you are aspiring to do can be done. It is just a longer and harder road.

One of the best places to find willing subjects is online. There are several hypnosis enthusiast websites that have trance junkies just waiting for someone who wants to hypnotize them, as well as an online hypnosis group or two on this site using skype and oovoo.

I hope this helps you
John

I strongly disagree. I'm rather surprised that you believe this John.

Hi Joel,

I trained in Scotland and it was 5 days in house training so I got to practise on my colleagues. In between modules, I begged and practised on my family and friends. I wouldn't say that I failed cos I learnt something new from every hypnosis and/or NLP practise. I remember my first client after qualifying and doing it for really was nerve racking and inducing hypnosis became very hard cos my client was nervous. I called up my mentor and asked for help. He asked me to do my own relaxation exercise and I will know what to do. I did my breathing exercise and we had a successful session.

Joel, where do you live in the UK? Write me an email if you dont want to give out the info and I will see what I can do to help.

The thing with that adage is that there are more currencies than just money. I agree with the sentiment but when I say, "you get what you pay for", I don't mean it in the literal sense.
@ JoeK-

Your advice is dangerous and irresponsible- Someone following your advice could get the crap beat out of them.
Hypnotizing some one or a group of people under the influence could be a recipe for disaster under the best of conditions, but if one doesn't really know what they are doing it is dangerous. Let's not forget- alcohol can bring out the worst in people.

I get that you are self-taught and we know that It can be done. On the other hand, you seem completely unaware that your ability to read and put what you read into practice is a very special skill and ability-- Antoine is the only other member of the group that I am aware of that has that talent/gift.

Practice and gaining experience can be very good or very bad depending on the quality of the practice. I agree with John -- Most members of HT.com who are interested in practicing hypnosis are far better served by taking a live training.

One more thing - If Elman were alive and teaching today he would be teaching Cognitive approaches to healing with hypnosis! I predict that you are in for a ugly realization as you try to integrate your practice into the mainstream. Elman's ideas about therapy and healing were perfect for when he introduced them and they are out of step with modern theory and practice. I am confident that you won't impress the doctors and therapists that you are reaching out to when you talk about regression and going to the root of their patients problems, but hey - that's just my opinion. Time will tell...

Love and hugs,

Michael E.

@ Joel

Welcome to hypnothoughts.

I am not sure if I have any interest in helping you or not. It depends on if you are unable to afford live trainings in which case - I am happy to help or if you are just opposed to investing in your education in which case I will just ignore your posts.

Michael E.
I have been around enough "hypnotists" that haven't had any formal training. Like the rest of my reply said; it can be done but its just a longer, harder road. The school of hard knocks will still give you an education.

As always, I respect your right to disagree.

John
