In reading some of the discussions this week, I thought to myself, too much focus on hypnosis not enough on basic "helping" skills or in other words, RAPPORT, RAPPORT, RAPPORT!  While the techniques, theories and methodologies of hypnosis are always worth continued exploration and practice, they wind up meaning very little with out them being nestled in the hands of a skilled helper.

There is a very good basic book out there called, "Helping skills" by Clara E. Hill

To your and your clients success!

Eric:

As I'm sure you know, outcome studies of psychotherapy have shown that the therapeutic relationship (rapport) explains 30% of what what makes therapy efffective.  The meta-analysis by Lambert shows that technique (and this would include hypnosis) and placebo are tied for 15% each.  But not to be mistaken, I utilize hypnosis to strengthen other techniques that I use in therapy.

So, I couldn't agree with you more than the primary skill needs to be building the therapuetic alliance.

Very aware...just thought it might be useful to add a reminder..:-)

For those who wish to look at that research you can look for: Lambert, M., J. & Barley, D., E. (2001). Research Summary on the therapeutic relationship and psychotherapy outcome. Psychotherapy, 38, 4, 357-361.

Thanks, Eric...I also noticed that theme in this past week's discussions. As Michael Ellner has often pointed out: it's not the tools or techniques...it's the skill of the practitioner. That skill set includes being able to gain rapport and think on one's feet, even while seated!

Thanks Eric! I'll check it out. It's funny. To me, building rapport must come very easily. Because I find it necessary to break rapport in order to get "work" done. I can't help but feel that the term "rapport" and it's necessity is either overly relied upon, or unclear. Because the less good feeling, friendly rapport I build and the more authoritative I am (rapport?), the faster and better the outcome for the client.

All I can say is nicely put!!

Kelley:

Rapport potentiates whatever technique the therapist (hypno) uses, and it strengthens the placebo effect.  The interaction effect is synergistic!
