I just got a distressing call from a friend of mine in AZ.  The other night, her and her daughter attended a group presentation on the use of hypnotherapy for weight loss and to stop smoking.  During the presentation, the hypnotherapist asked for a few volunteers to come up on stage so he could demonstrate his ability to put someone in a trance.  My friend said he kept referring to the women on stage as "Sweetie". She said he got very close up to their faces and had very bad breath - smelled like a dirty ashtray.  Then he put a cup with ammonia in it under each person's nose to demonstrate that they were actually in a trance.

Now I have never done a big room type group session, but so much of this seems so far off.  I would like other hypnotherapists opinions - is any of this common occurrence during a large group session?

I think that guy travels around. I attended one of these traveling show and he did the same. I' m from Missouri
Almost as common as there are those "Playing Hypnotist", or con artists....About forty years ago, when I was Vice President of the Hyponosis Society of Alberta, I had cause to confront one of these travelling salesmen... I invited him to lunch, and quietly informed him that he was a disgrace to our art, and he was free to do as he wished, but if he continued, I would be sitting beside him when he gave his spiel on local radio, and as a skilled local I would inform all listeners just what to expect. He bowed out and ran, never to return....Incidentally up close his suit was the worse for wear, and he looked anything but successful. I did not notice the bad breath however.....
This is very strange, and I think not typical of even the old time traveling hypnotists. I attended on with Wichita a few years ago, just to see what was up. The guy was a class act, and people left happy non-smokers...
I wish I had thought to ask her the man's name. Thanks for the input - it just really sounded weird to me. I have to agree that this type of thing makes people weary of seeking real help from a legit hypnotherapist.
