Greetings All,

As I mentioned earlier, I'm working with a young woman in her 40's with Hashimoto's.  She reports that the work I've been doing with her is very helpful: focusing on relaxation, control (she now has a very operative control panel in her "Safe Place"), and making sure she is doing something for herself every day.  She is also doing a brief journal twice a day and is experiencing positive results.

I'm interested in hearing suggestions for helping her release her great fear of hair-loss.  Since she's had Hashimoto's she's watched with progressive horror as her hair has thinned. In her own words she sees her self-esteem wrapped up in her hair, and is convinced her family is looking at her in disappointment since she's "no longer the beauty" she once was.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Aline

Hi Aline,

It appears you have a couple of directions to take this belief...the first would be in making suggestions that her hair stop thinning, which may also be construed as confirming that she is less as her hair becomes less.

The second, more valuable approach in my mind, is to allow this lovely lady to tap into a core value of being okay, of being lovable no matter what her exterior represents. This is no easy task for any of us, but one I believe worthy of attention. Doing so will create a safety net for your client: if her hair loss stops, cool, she gets to keep her hair and feel great about herself. But if her hair loss continues, she is still okay and gets to feel great about herself!

Best wishes,

Kelley

I gave a talk about mind-body healing and mentioned having clients who visualized wearing a hypnotic cooling cap who did not lose their hair during chemo and/or radiation treatments several years ago. A few months later, I met a women who told me she attended that talk and that she started to imagine that she was wearing a hypnotic cooling cap. Get this, her alopecia-related hair loss stopped. She didn't re-grow hair -- she just stopped losing hair...

You might tell your client about an experimental hypnotic technique that has helped many people stop hair loss - This imagery has helped people stop hair loss during chemo and/or radiation treatments and it also helped people with alopecia-related hair loss and it could help you... And see how she responds...

Or you can focus her attention on her inner-beauty and self-image...

I knew I could count on you for a great answer!  Thanks Michael.  I look forward to using this imagery with her.

I don't know much about hypnotherapy yet, but I have hashimotos and my hair falls out.  I'm not bald, but it falls out a lot, I can fill a brush in ten strokes, and chunks fall out in the shower.

My holistic MD had me change my diet.  I am now gluten free and taking supplements.  It helped my symptoms without medication.  When I don't take my supplements the symptoms get worse, I get cold and hair starts to fall out again.

There are certain foods that hashimotos patients should not eat depending if you are TH1 or TH2.  Have you asked her if she is aware of this or compliant with her meds and diet?  (I'd love a hypnosis session to help with consistantly taking my supplements and ease my large diet change.)

I am fascinated at the thought that mind-body healing can help with medical issues.  I am only in the middle of my second hypnosis book, Through Time into Healing by Brian Weiss.  He has countless stories of how hypnosis can help with medical issues like what Michael is mentioning.    This at least gives me hope for my medical issues.  Not sure now common his books are, I thought I'd mention it.  He's a great writer.

Hi Christina,

Thanks for your reply.  It is helpful to hear from people with the same issue.  And yes, this gal has adjusted her diet and is both lactose and gluten free.  I will certainly double check with her regarding supplements.  The hypnotherapy we have done thus far has helped her quite a bit... she is more relaxed and generally has built time into her life for herself which can be difficult as a new mother.

Are you planning on taking a certification course at some point?

Hi Aline,  Yes, I plan to start my training in March.  I am so excited!!

I am dairy free too.

I wrote a blog about my hashimotos and going gluten free.  It will give you some insight on how a hashimotos patient can feel just struggling in daily life.  here it is if you are interested.  http://holistictransitions.blogspot.com/2010/07/going-gluten-free-f...

You sound like you are doing quality work. Here is a small suggestion.
In her own words she sees her self-esteem wrapped up in her hair

You might want to have her see that and do some imagery work 'unwrapping' it (spraying the hair with anti tangle/wrap spray and seeing the self-esteem come free).

It might do the trick.

I like your imagery.  Thanks Joe.
