Help! Promoting hypnosis to a wide audience for the first time!

Because of “adult learners week” in May here in the UK, the Naval Base is organising a drop in event.  I can have a stand, a display area and promote hypnosis to a wide audience for a whole day.

I plan to have handouts with info on hypnosis and free relaxation cd’s.  Perhaps run some relaxation workshops or teach self-hypnosis (I was promised the quieter spot in the venue). I'm a fan of Elman type inductions.

This is the first time I will be doing this, so you can understand my excitement and some nerves. Any ideas at all on how to make my first public event interesting or how to organise it, will be greatly appreciated!

Hi

You have a great opportunity to "spread the word" and build your client base here. Personally I would forget about the relaxation workshops and go for something a lot more powerful such as resource anchoring, circle of excellence etc. You really want to give them a "wow"

If you didn't get the chance to listen to Kevin Cole's talk on how to make powerful presentations then I suggest you get a copy. It has lots of good info and will help a lot.

I would also do demos of suggestability test at your stand.

Also if you are going to give away CDs then ask for their name and email. You really want to build your list so that you can market to them in the future.

Another way to get names and addresses is to run a raffle. Offer a Weight loss package as a prize and have people fill out a small form giving their name, address and email and draw the prize at the end of the day. This can be a really good way of building your list.

Oh and have fun!

Doing these events are amazing and have become a personal favorite of mine -

Choose a specific topic of hypnosis (something that you do that they may be interested in) and focus your presentation around that - people do not really want to know about hypnosis but what hypnosis can do for them. And then give them what they want.

Do some demonstrations - be passionate and focus on what you love - they will feel it if you are sincere - and if you are nervous, be nervous, embrace it and it shall just help you be better!

All the Best!

@ Leo .....Thank you. You must be a showman, full of fun!!  and....  LOL  I mainly do hypnosis for childbirth ...oups I doubt I can focus my presentation around that !  I am having a giggle and your advice is great about "focus on what you love".

@ Barry...Thank you Barry for the wow factor, brilliant ideas as always...anchoring, circle of excellence, suggestibility tests etc sound excellent !  I'll search for Kevin Cole's talk.

Hey Vana,

Target your audience: How about a special presentation using mind power to combat sea-sickness?! Or, offer something to help spouses/families deal with a loved one's absence when out to sea... Or, promote the effectiveness of your work for claustrophobia for the submariners!

PS ~ You may want to investigate whether members of the Navy are allowed to participate in hypnosis. It may be restricted and even jeopardize security status for some.

Thank you for all your replies, I liked the advise above such as circle of excellence and sea-sickness cure.

But you never now how those events will turn out, so in reality, I ended up doing loads of demonstrations today & ...now.....

I am really BUZZING.....instant inductions got people relaxing....

I had people watching & a queue of people wanting to experience hypnosis & RELAXATION and most did NOT believe they can go all the way down :)  ... for the stout non-believers I had to try a little harder and also get them to  "clench their hand into a fist" or "lock their arm like a steel bar" (so I could make sure they were as tense as they possibly could...) and then RELEASE !  BOOM

Wow... instant inductions did not fail me...I just wish I had the time to see everyone (did not even have time to get lunch)...

However I love your input to my discussion & I'm sure I will include some of your ideas in my next event, become more & more confident !

well done Vana

Not so fast with that limiting belief, Vana...

Of course you can't do a presentation on actual child birth- but you certainly can do it on "How To Dramatically Minimize Pain During Childbirth- With Hypnosis!"

And you can certainly give your audience some quality experiences on how to minimize their discomfort level.

You said that you are a fan of the Elman induction. I am too (Well, I guess we would be full fledged hypnotists if we weren't).

You can certainly have a demo subject, use the Elman induction on her-- Really emphasize the importance of the body being completely and totally relaxed-- And then pinch your demo subjects arm pretty good, put a C- clamp on there, or perhaps even set of Alice Clamps (Be very careful with those- and make sure you really know what you're doing).

Although you can't do that with your entire audience- that's certainly something they will be impressed with.

The rest, you can roll with...

My specific formula- in a nutshell is...

What? (Your topic is)
Why?  (Why it's important to them)
How?  (How they can have/experience it)
How can they find out more? (This is where you offer them a special promotion of some kind)

You can search around for more detail that I'm certain I've mentioned in the archives of HT and or wait until me an Craig Eubanks to put out a new product we're working on that should be awesome... Leo uses this formula now and has been gaining incredible results!

Also, definitely check out Craig's advice for marketing tips- including this month's interview with Marc Carlin on how to use Groupon)

Hope that helps... And remember, it's all about giving your audience as many profound and undeniable experiences as possible...

"Tell me and I won't really be listening- and or might think you're lying, Show me and it better be good- or I'll think it only works for that person and or they are just a "Shill", Involve me... Give me a profound and undeniable experience and I'll want to hire you..." ~ Modified version of a Chinese Proverb that I say differently every time I write- according to whom I'm writing it to...

LOL... That's what I get for only skimming through a thread and not reading it fully...

Obviously you meant that you couldn't do a presentation on Child Birth for THE NAVY!!

LOL... Well, this is true... Hopefully you can piece something together that's useful from my response anyway ;-P

LOLOL... Still laughing at myself... That's just funny...

Barry's suggestion of a raffle is a truly brilliant suggestion.

You could easily offer a session or sessions as a prize and get countless names and contact details which you can then use for marketing. And in each case you'd know they have an interest in a session.

You could offer all non winners some kind of session discount after you have a winner.

As far as I'm aware you wouldn't need any kind of licence to run such a promotion but it may be best to check.

Here in the UK the relevant piece of legislation is the Gambling Act of 2005

This link may be useful to any UK based therapists considering the same thing..

Many thanks to Barry for such a super suggestion.

The possible variations on this are practically infinite and such raffles could be great practice builders.

Well done with your demos!
