HMI advanced course tuition options & decisions

Hi - I am finishing up the foundations course at HMI and deciding on which tuition plan to go with for my advanced courses. My main question is for those that have went thru HMI and is if you feel the DVDs are important to purchase. I am inclined towards the streaming access with no dvds just for the 1K savings. I would like to use that money and invest in other materials.

I'm curious for those that did get the dvds...do you find yourself using them much after you get thru the 18 months and if you did not get the dvds did you feel regret that you passed on that option.

Is there any avenue to buy the dvds used on the after market if I decide in the future that I want them?

Thanks for any help.

I am an HMI graduate, and I love the training, as to DVD's, I think it is a personal choice, and It always pays to take other curses and workshop else where as well, so you can expand your knowledge from other experts out side of HMI as well...

Hello Lori,
I checked out your profile page...isn't excitement about learning something that is changing your life for the better something unexplainable with words.....and still I know how you must feel.....

Before I attended HMI, I knew nothing about hypnosis, in fact, I had only read one self help book......I was doing the best I could always thinking that the way things are, is the way it has to be, meant to be, will always be, so make the most of it.

Then at a Real Estate Wealth Expo, (I'm not into real estate, someone asked me if I wanted to go), there was a hypnotist who was explaining that getting rich starts with your mind. He started to explain the power of the mind, he was doing NLP stuff, and this was something I had never ever heard before.

I was hooked. I said out loud, "I have to know what he knows.....I paid close to 3/4 of the HMI tuition for a total of 8 days, 5 in Vegas a another 3 day seminar.

Then they were offering a hypnotherapy course in Florida for either 9 or 11 days, for more than HMI's tuition. I hadn't yet heard of HMI, I hadn't picked up Whole Life magazine yet, and the only reason I picked up the magazine was for an artistic photo on the cover, (nude women in a tree), then when I flipped it over, on the back were words that sounded like they were coming out of my head, it was the HMI ad.

Sorry, I got carried away.

I see you are not in California so you must be taking the long distance course and they are probably offering DVD's or streaming for the course...I'm just guessing. I have no idea about the DVD's if they are part of the full long distance course....

but I do agree with Doreen about also getting other training and the extra bucks can come in handy. NLP courses in your area would be an ideal thing to spend that money on somewhere towards the end of your training.

I will make a correction from Doreen's advice....she says, "and It always pays to take other curses and workshop else where as well."

I have found that "curses" have never been a good thing.......but extra courses do cost money. (I'm having fun at your expense Doreen, I hope you don't mind), I think I spent a lot of money on courses and seminars that weren't HMI, and every time an instructor or someone passionate about a subject mentioned a good book.....I bought it to read later, I haven't finished reading all of those yet, and I am sure glad I bought them one at a time over a years time.

Again, sorry I can't help you with the decision regarding the DVD's, but it has been fun writing to you. The things I have learned about hypnosis, hypnotherapy, NLP, etc....have changed my life for the better, and I think it's just the tip of the ice berg.

Enjoy the ride.

Steve
I think you should do the streaming videos. It is the same materials and by the time you finish viewing how much do you really think you will go back? You still have access to the videos for some time after finishing the units... don't you? I know I did when I took mine.

I would also agree with Doreen, take the difference and invest in a live course with different instructor just to get a different view on the modalities.

Good Luck,
Aino

I did buy the DVD's and LOVE having access to them anytime I need to. I pulled some out the other day, because I was going to do something new, and wanted to review for it quickly. I feel they are worth it.

I also was able to get a (Personal) student loan through Sallie Mae, to up front fund my schooling, as HMI is secular and government approved. If you would have issues with funding, call Sallie Mae direct and ask them how to get funds for school.

Congratulations on your foundations course.... it's only a teaser to the wonderful courses. ENJOY!

Hi there Lori, Like Jill, I did buy the dvd's. I got them before they update all the material, so, I had the fortune to have foundation from the late Mr. Ron Hodge, and also I can watch the new version via streaming. I'll suggest you to find out with HMI if after you finish you can still watch the videos online, if yes, better save the money and go streaming. There is no way you can retain all the information they give you, so, for me is very convenience to have them handy. You'll keep yourself entertain for long time and in the mean time check hypnosis videos on youtube or metacafe and you'll learn many rapid inductions till get some money for another workshop that you like.
I don't considered the foundations course a teaser (respecting your opinion Jill). There you learn everything about how to hypnotize people and the day you have to give a speech in front of professionals in medicine or others areas you can give a detailed explanation about what is happening physically and mentally when a person is getting hypnotized.
Congratulations Lori
Hello Lori, (again)

Piecing together some parts, hearing the name Ron Hodges......and if the DVD's are the 401 tapes, I would suggest go streaming.

When I was there, the 401 tapes were not offered for purchase, we had to check them out and check them back in, most of them were still VHS....there was no streaming yet. Streaming started right after our class was finished with them. I think if you are an AHA member you can still view them after graduating.

I would just take good notes while watching, especially of wording or phrasing that you think may sound like the words themselves are specifically arranged.

It is found that after watching so many of the DVD's, it's amazing how the information you need, when you need it, comes to you. It's good to watch the patterns and the rhythm, the confidence, and the way his presence means progress.

The money saved can be used to learn from others, different ways to hypnotize, other ways to do therapy. The combination of the way HMI teaches therapy, and that is one of the most valuable things they offer, and there is so much to learn, and then there are all the other tools they teach, speech, handwriting, body syndromes, family systems, secondary gain, imagery, and the list goes on and on....combine that and knowledge from other sources and that is powerful stuff.

Enjoy,
Steve
Thanks for the replies everyone. I think streaming is the way for me, I am going to use the money towards other learnings. I will have access for 18 months and at that point I can choose to purchase individual dvds of my choosing. I am an AHA member, Steve, so I will have to look into that.

This is going to be a amazing journey for me and I feel fortunate that I found this forum at its inception.
Steve, It is my pleasure, I also make fun of myself, It's so much fun.. lol.. so, If you don't mind making fun on my expense, then I don't mind it too :)
I don't know how the educations long distance work, but I am sure HMI have great way of teaching, the best way to find out is the one who took the long distance... the only additional training that I personally took, that was based on DVD's, were Richard Nongard's, Calvin D. Banyan, Ron Eslinger and few others that I cannot remember their names... and they all were excellent...

I live in Ohio. I did not have to check out anything and place it back. I received it all up front and in one balk package and could skip around if I wanted because I had everything I needed. I almost skipped straight to the ones I felt more interested in, but I didn't do that, because I was interested in it all. Everything was DVD, not VHS. Yeah, I got to see the late Ron Hodges. but it was still great. I know some video's are now updated, so that is even better. I too, was an AHA member and also took extra classes, when they have specials through out the years. I don't mind continuing education and feel it's reasonable.

I am only expressing what I did, and that I love my choices. *s* Back then there was no other choice as there was not streaming videos at that time for advanced courses. I had to test different too. They switched it while I was in the middle of learning, but it all worked out well.

Since then, I also learned Elman styles, Banyan's 5 path, and others. I am biased towards the Kappas style, but have and use others too. It's all about preference in what works for you with your clients.

You should love it no matter which one you choose.
Have fun...
Jill
Hi Lori,

I'm doing the streaming course right now ( I live in Australia) and personally don't feel I've missed out on anything by not purchasing the dvd's.

The course is great and in depth. I take copious amounts of notes while watching the streaming video to make sure I understand the content. You don't have to take the quiz immediately following it, you can watch the video as many times as you want. Also, my tutor answers my questions within 24 hours (time difference).

Cheers

Lee
