How do we deal with lack of respect for Hypnotherapy?

I am about to attend a training course by Bennett Stellar University which will take place in Sedona beginning July 28th. When I share this information with friends, family and potential clients they make jokes about quacking like a duck or "you can practice on me." I'm interested to know if people expected free sessions or in other ways didn't understand the amount of work, money and time it takes to become a professional hypnotherapist. How did you handle this? Did any of you do free sessions?

Hi Deborah,I'm with Doreen on this. The teasing/retribrution only highlights the perpotrator's insecurities. They are attempting to project their fears onto you. it is their subconscious resistance to change. It simply confirms the fact that you are changing and thay are not. My daughter learned to swim using free armbands, one day she jumped in the water without them and swam successfuly. Somehow deep down she just knew! So, give free sessions until you are happy that you've learned to float. Enjoy the experience.

Paul

Hello Deborah,

First of all congratulations and I am happy for you.
Now, don't worry about convincing family, friends or co-workers, when time arrives, you will be so professional that you will be able to handle it in a very creative way.
Your job is not to convince anyone that hypnosis works, your mission is to educate them.

Also when people make a joke, play along, have fun and say, great, sure I can make you do anything you want, did you say you wanted to quack like a duck? smile with confidence... and If someone offer to practice on them, say, wonderful, we are going to have so much fun...

As to Free sessions, some will tell you yes, and some will tell you; that If you do it for free you don't value yourself, well I disagree, I did my first 60 or 100 clients for free, not only i received credit for them, but I learned to use hypnosis better.

Think about it, when a person go to massage school, they advice all students to practice on clients for free, why? practice makes it perfect.

All the best....

Deborah, a couple things you might add to your smoking protocol is that when you regress, you regress to the first time they smoked and find out what the secondary gain construct is (peer acceptance, looking cool, escaping boredom, sublimated sexual gratification, whatever . . . don't assume, just let the session bring it out). Then, demonstrate how they no longer need that gain or run something along the lines of core transformation or 3D mind to diffuse it. Be sure to anchor in positive emotional associations to being a non-smoker. The reinforcers are good to work with, add in strong positive feelings to those. I tend not to use negative reinforcement like the turn your stomach stuff or thoughts of cancer and death as while they do work with some folks with a few folks they can backfire. Just as I don't hit my child, I prefer not to hit my clients. Positive reinforcement is my preference. Take a look at the book "Don't Shoot the Dog" by Karen Pryor for a good read on behavioral change.

Hi Deborah,

Brian gave you a great advice, as to having sessions with your son, It's a different story...
Usually with smoking cessation, the good news is, that you can hypnotize just about anyone, family or not family, even for free... The reason your son is struggling, can be for many reasons, he did not any reinforcement of the suggestions, or he may have a secondary gain.

One thing you need to remember, not everyone becomes an ex smoker after their first session, some clients may need up to six sessions, once a week, even with a CD to take home....

How many cigarettes your son and his friends are smoking, what type? why they are smoking?

What will be the replacement instead of smoking?

I think your son and his friend did value your sessions, other wise they would have not do it with you.

You may need to give them permission to smoke as much as they use to,while reducing the amount gradually.

Remember, every one is capable of receiving and excepting suggestions, but not everyone is going to except the same suggestions, By saying that, I mean what works for me, may not work well for you, make sense?

I went to hypnotherapy school a few years ago. I went for myself to gain skill to improve my life and nursing career and perhaps a retirement job. I did not do it to impress my friends or others and was not really concerned about what they thought. It actually is none of my business. As I was learning I had to do free sessions to practice techniques and learn how to do it. Some people actually gave me substansial payments because they were so pleased with the results.
