the Free Hypnosis Social Network
Hi, here in New Zealand I am finding it hard to get doctors to send referals to me. I have had clients asking their dr's to do this but it is not forthcoming. I have send client notes back to their dr's with the clients permission. Detailing the issue presented, what action was taken and outcome. Does anyone know of any other ways of getting dr's to reconise hypnotherapy as a worth while thearpy for their clients?
I have clinics in 2 x medical centres, what am I missing?

If you search this discussion board you will find several helpful threads on this subject. Or, you could order a great book from Melissa Roth outlining just how to get docs to refer to you.
The main thing I would change in how you are approaching this is to stop having your clients deliver the requests. You need to submit it directly. You can see some great samples of paperwork on the Forms for Free group here...
Best wishes,
Kelley

I have had the same problem.
I live in Belgium and over here, hypnotherapy does not exist. I have sent referrals to doctors and I have had to explain what the word meant!!
It is so frustrating and depressing. In the end, I have quit, given up referrals.
I got zero result of all the letters and documents I have sent. Not one.
Only things that work over here are my website and word-to-mouth.
I suppose New Zealand is better than Belgium, so I wish you good luck on your hunting trip!
Greetings,
Bernard

Jenny,
I'm so sorry that I only now saw your post from Janurary asking for how to get the book on MD Referrals. Go to my web site http://www.melissaroth.com. Go to the section that says Products. There is a drop down menu. Go to "Books" adn on the second row you will find the book HOW TO GET MD REFERRALS. You can get it as an ebook so you do not have to pay shipping to. IF it doesn't download immediately then email me at melissa@melissaroth.com and I will manually download it for you.

Unfortunately, not all health professionals are up to speed on hypnosis, so you may have to do a bit of educating and marketing to them. A couple of approaches:
1. Educate your doctors. Write up a series of case studies, using the "Problem, Solution, Result" format, and mail them out one each week for at least two or three months. Make your mailing a regular thing, and some of them will become interested and begin reading you regularly. Case studies should be short - say, 350 to 500 words - and never wander off topic. One person I know who did this took it a step further. She printed them on heavy card stock and punched them ready for inserting into a binder (make it easy to save them, and you're implying greater value). After you've sent 10 or so, a ballsy step would be to send them a special binder for the pages. Of course, there should be no selling in the case study. Just insert a brief, un-salesy statement at the end mentioning that you take referrals. The case studies just help the doctors imagine what kind of patients they can send to you.
2. Take a roundabout path to their attention. Write up a series of good solid columns for your local newspaper, each about 700 words, covering one tightly focused topic. Again, no selling or promoting in the piece. Just a quick, 10 or 15 word byline at the end telling who you are and where your clinics are. If you walk into a newspaper office with a fistful of columns already written and ready to run (6-10 are a good start), you'll be hard to resist. Newspapers have all that empty, blank paper to fill every day or every week, and when you give them good, well-written material that benefits their readers, you simply make their job easier. This method has the added benefit that you'll probably get calls from local readers as well.
Good luck with your practice.
Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
Charles Burke
