Hi.  I am not sure where to put this question.  I have a client who said his insurance company claimed he could use his HSA card for hypnotherapy (for smoking cessation).  I have tried to get my merchant services company to change my SIC code to medical provider from business services, but was declined.  When inquiring as to why, the person with whom I spoke did not know much.

So, I thought I would ask all of my fellow hypnotherapists and hypnotists (who are not counselors)- are any of you able to take HSA cards? (I do not have a counseling license - only certified hypnotist/hypnotherapist).  If so, what should my next step be?

Thank you for any advice and guidance!

I do not know about HSA since it appears to be a Washington thing.   But I have never sought insurance for clients doing smoking cessation, becasue in my experience, the majority of people who do not become invested in their own recovery simply do not stop smoking.   It becomes a "i'll try that"  rather than a "I want this" mentality.

In my years doing smoking cessation anytime the company pays, insurance pay, a realtive pays or whatever, they just don't quit.  I charge $259 which is far less than a month worth of cigarettes for most, and if they can pay the tobacco company, they can pay me....

Thank you for your reply, Richard.  I didn't know HSA was a Washington thing?  The client actually does payi with his own earned money, it just comes out of his pre-tax healthcare savings account.  So it's not insurance, just pre-tax dollar savings.

Health Savings Account!!   I get it now.   You are correct, this is NOT insurance, it is his own money, set aside as a pretax savings plan.   He should be able to simply submit a recipet and file for reimbursement.   That would be the simple way.   You really don;t want to see him, then fill out papers and then wait for your money do you?

If I can get his HSA card to work, I would be paid immediately through the credit card and he would be purchasing with his health savings account pre-tax dollars.  I bet Zolita Grant would know about this.  She is an expert when it comes to insurance reimbursements, even though this is not exactly a reimbursement.  If no one else responds with information, I'll try her.  Thanks!
There is a 50/50 you can run it just like any other debit card; if it is logoed with a visa/mc logo.
I have already tried and my merchant account declined the card.  This is why I am asking..
The HSA card should work just like a debit card. It is up to the consumer to make sure there are funds in his account to cover the expense. He can also pay you with a check from that account. It is also up to the consumer to have a physician's referral for allowable medical expenses.
I've had the same experience, but  the message back was that the card issuer declined to process  the transaction.  I run my stuff through PayPal, so it might be that they decline all PayPal transactions.

Laura - I run them just like any other card. Sometimes the client has to call them to add me to their list. I have had no problem with these.
