How to bring someone out of Trance that isn't responding?

Hi everyone....

In my training they didn't cover how to bring someone out of trance that isn't responding to the counting back/down, etc....

I had someone the other day that was very deep (i'm sorry but i'm not sure on correct terminology yet) and after counting back about 3 times she came up and out nicely BUT I had a lady yesterday that went so deep that even counting didn't work - clicked my fingers, with instructions to say i would, and in the end i gently touched her arm....

Well, she jumped!!!!!! I felt awful for her!! She was fine with me and told me that a time before with another therapist the same thing happened and they couldn't get her back....

I know she wasn't upset or angry but i don't ever want one of my clients to come back into the room with such a start again - it felt like i had shocked her to reality.

So, please, can someone either give me some detailed steps to take if this happens or point me somewhere in which i can gain the knowledge and learn it so i can limit this happening in the future??? I'm sure it will happen again but I want to at least know that i'm skilled enough to deal with it :)

Thank you all in advance xoxox

I just let him zone out. He was a close friend and I was at his house. He zoned and I surfed the web.

Thanx guys!!! I didn't know to ask for a verbal response so i'm not completely sure that she was sleeping, i'd still say she wasn't but my ego isn't that important.....ummmm, did i say that out loud?!?!!?

i will certainly do some study into this.

Love the bladder thing - and next time will try for verbal response first. Just remembered that i did a session with another person recently and i wanted them to give me a physical response with their finger and at the end of the session they said they just couldn't move!!! they wanted to but was so relaxed they couldn't!

This is soooo fascinating - just have to figure out how to make myself do what i want! lol

Chris - when you negotiated the 5mins with your client did you keep speaking to him or just let him "be in the zone"??

I always include in the talk in suggestion before waking them that with every number counted a new energy from the learning that has came to be will grow stronger and stronger and when they finally awake they will feel very good and just as relaxed as they would like to be as if they just took a very refreshing nap and when the wake up the feelings of this will be spining so incredibly fast then I start the counting and usually after about 5-10 seconds after the last number they wake up looking high as hell
Ok, thanx again... believe me i'm cutting and pasting all this info and will produce something i'm comfortable with, utilising all your suggestions... i don't feel comfortable with what i would consider to be "negative" suggestions but believe that i can now cope with this - it may never happen again!! hahahahaaa

Amber if you PM me your e-Mail address I have a Dave Elman e-book that may interest you.

It's called "Hypnotherapy" and there is some really good stuff in there. Let me know.

You've had a lot of good responses to this question Amber and I think you are now well equipped to handle a variety of situations. Let me speculate on something for a second. The coma state is a difficult state to "accidently" put someone in. I have done it (intentionally) and I have watched other people do it (intentionally). It is not a state in which I would normally work with a client. On the other hand, I have often experienced folks in a deep trance spontaneously falling asleep on me. When that happens I switch to "Hypnosleep mode" continue the session and when I finish I give them "good feelings" awakening suggestions and tell them to take all the time they need over the next few seconds to return all the way back to the room. etc etc.. I then turn up the lights begin shuffling paperwork and raise my voice and shift my tone. Usually the next thing I say is "WELCOME BACK... YOU REALLY ENJOYED THAT!" (embedded command)
I am going to speculate that you weren't dealing with the coma state, You just had yourself a good old fashioned "snorer". The "blackmail trick" is good to know, but it is sort of a trick of last resort.for sticky situations. I think Fable was on the right path for what actually happened to you. But fear not, you didn't cause them any harm but waking them abrubtly.

I t should have bee part of your training. When people are in coma state or Esdaile state are feeling fine and don't respond to command.( unless she was asleep!) The trick is to tell client, next time we de hypnosis I will make sure you don't ever go so deep again and you will never feel that beautiful, amazing state ever. As they want to go back to that beautiful state they emerge.

Martine
having read the whole thread again, I think as Hugh says, I was on path, with the fact that people fall asleep, far more often than they go into any coma, or Esdaile state,

it is a questeion of subtley bringing them back from sleep in such a way, that they either believe that they were just very deep... (deceptive) or in a way that honestly acknowledges that you lost them for a short time, but you knew how to bring them back.

I prefer the later, although I have sometimes used the former.

but clients have an uncanny way of recognising the truth of a situation, and if they have drifted to sleep, then I feel it is far bettter to say that you suspect that is what happened, but that all the suggetsions prior to them drifting into a natural sleep, would still take effect.

love and hugs,

Fable
That's happened to me Jim. Same thing. I Thought it was an abreaction. but it turned out that he had been up for 36 hours and was just plain bushed. I finally convinced his friends to just take him home and let him sleep it off. I stayed almost an hour after the show to get him in safe hands, Key lesson learned .. when everyone around you is losing thier heads... Keep yours.

From a stage point of view I get people from time to time that go into a deep trance and do not want to come out. I have two occasions where the people on stage had been up one or more days in a row and are just tired. This happens a lot at college shows were the kids stay up all night to study. Both time when it was do to lack of sleep it was just a matter of getting time away enough to get to bed.

I would never use the "coma" command, it is contrary to my philosophy that the hypnotist is a guide or facilitator of the trance within. It harkens back to an era when the hypnotist has the power, control and does hypnosis rather than guiding someone into hypnosis. And I think most people hold the view that trance in natural and something I do with someone rather than to someone. If we introduce the "coma command" we are incongruent with our beliefs, and most likely what I have told my clients in pre-talk. If I have someone who will not wake up, I follow this script:

1.) After failing to open the eyes I say, "This state you have created does feel wonderful, and I will allow you a few more moments to enjoy it and reorient on your own as I take a minute to prepare for my next client. Simply enjoy another minute or two and then open your eyes reorienting to the room when you are ready."
2.) If they do not respond within two minutes a direct suggestion: "It is time to conclude this session (Snaps and claps are good here, as is turning off any music) and so now open you eyes, take in a breath and feel the chair below you, wide awake... open the eyes...." Use directive language, confidence and increased volume.
3.) If this fails, move direcly in front of the closed eyes, saying "Eyes open!" and blow a puff of air right into the closed eyelid. The eyes WILL pop open. In my entire career I have done this three times, twice on stage, and once in my office. This will work everytime.
Thanx Richard,

I will keep this with me at all times! I feel the same about the "coma" command, just doesn't sit well with me.

I learned that in coma state there is natural process of healing
And when the body and mind are totally relax and no worry exists
Its make sense
Like a deep meditation
So it's probably have a good place in creating natural healing process inside the person
Also as a self hypnosis it's totally refreshing and a good internal quiet time to charge your personal energy
Gerald Kein have a very good DVD on the subject highly recommended

Hi,
When someone is that deep and wont come out, you say "If you don't come back when I count to 5, I will make sure that you cannot go into this feeling again". Then count to 5. You can also say something like, "your car may get towed away if you don't come back very soon" or..."your husband is here to pick you up".. Use whatever you think might work, knowing your client's circumstances. You might also say something like, "another client is coming in two minutes, you must emerge now...and count again. If they don't come back then, they will eventually emerge. I have had plenty of people that took awhile to come back. Our training told us about the first part I mentioned. They are in a beautiful blissful state, and they just don't want to come back. Also, if they are challenged with depression, they need rest. Don't worry...they will emerge.
