I'd like to know the success rate of those hypnotherapists who are using Hypno-band "surgery", (like lapband surgery only using hypnosis) or other similar hypnosis "surgery" for weight loss--or for any other type of surgery, for that matter. It intrigues me, but the bottom line is results, especially long term results. Anyone with experience in doing this, please state your experiences. Thanks
CindyLou

Cindy Lou, when I was considering learning Hypno-Band I contacted a couple of the practitioners listed on John's website who are members here and heard very encouraging results. I have had only a few clients who were willing to try it but the short term results have been good. I don't think I did the system justice and would like more clients to practice and improve my delivery.

John, I didn't know you donated proceeds to charity. What a wonderful gift.
Thanks Jackie! I'm sure you will find the more you work with the system the more successful and fun it becomes! Cindy is now a "Hypno-Bander" by the way. :-)

Dan,

John has taken the time and money to patent the mythology and copyright the name, he would be a fool to give his intellectual property. He is in business to support himself and to provide a service to the public. Part of his service is to train others in a technique he has developed. If you are imaginative and creative you could watch the many you-tube videos and visit the many sites that explain gastric banding and formulate your own procedure and come up with a clever name and market it to the public. Perhaps then you could be generous and share it with the hypno community as you think John should.

Hi CindyLou.

I just came across your post, and like you I was looking for a process for 'hypnoband' hypnosis. Once again, I'm both amazed and disheartened to witness the parsimonious way in which many of we hypnotherapists 'hang onto' procedures and scripts.

I find it rather sad, as I thought this site in particular was aimed at sharing knowledge. As far as I know there's no copyright allotted to these processes, the same as any other hypnosis process. The one reason given that its in order to stop non qualified hypnotherapists using the technique doesn't hold water for me I'm afraid. Decades of experience tell me that non qualified, inexperienced practitioners simply fade away, and have no affect on the core of us who are here for the right reason.

I wish you well in your quest CindyLou, and by now of course you may have accessed the process. If so, I wish you great success with it.

As for the parsimony, I reckon it's time to lighten up, that's the whole purpose of this forum. It's the finest way in which we, as Hypnotherapists can evolve and move forward; I'm sure the originators of this site had that in mind in the beginning. Personally, I will share ANY issue and knowledge of use that's come my way as I've been working in this modality of therapy.

Dan Elliott.
Hi CindyLou,
I have been using John's Hypno-band system since January, I now have 23 clients on hypno-band and they all lost weight in different degree, from 29 to the most recent 12 LBS. is it considered 100% maybe i don't know. i only know one thing and is that if you eliminate the emotional reason for which they eat more than they should and you personalize John's hypno-band to suit your client, you'll get awesome results.
My 2 cents
I am in California Manhattan Beach South Bay

I have my first HypnoBand client right now. All is going well!

Michael - Good to hear of your success. As you say, eliminate the reasons and help the client to achieve the changes in lifestyle and the results will follow. I'm sure Cindy will emulate your success too!

Thanks Chris for your support!
I, too, am interested in becoming a licensed practioner for use of the Hypnoband name, however my training stressed that as hypnotherapists we should be models of the success of hypnotherapy. That being said, is the program on CD so the hypnotherapist can self-apply it (to lose weight before advertising that she can help others do the same)? Otherwise I can see how it would be like going to a therapist for smoking cessation only to see the therapist butting out a cigarette as you approach for your appt!
Hi, my name is Lee and I have recently qualified as a clinical hypnotherapist. I have no real intention of setting up a clinic until I have raised the capital to do it correctly. I want to continue researching techniques as to be as affective, moral and legal as I possibly can. I’m not looking to be a competitor to other therapists in the West Midlands UK.

However there is a lot of local buzz about hypno gastric band (whatever alternate name) but there is nothing I can find out on how to do it. Other than a self hypnosis cd.

Please could someone find it in their heart to give me a little guidance because each time I try to develop my knowledge I seem to arrive at a dead end with more questions than I started.

E.g. of questions.

Why after installing a virtual gastric band you have 3 or more therapy sessions with a client, is this greed or good practise methods?

Where do get a cd for background noise of an operating theatre?

How do you create the smell of a hospital?

I have many more but do not want to come across as a bore.

Many thanks

Lee James
I too have become very interested in the concept of the virtual gastric band. I like the way it has captured the interest of the public and the media. And I like what I have read about the various different approaches used to help people with weight problems. The most important aspect of it is that what has been reported as results has been really positive... 70-80% and even higher success with clients losing weight over the 4 week period that most of these programs require.

As a hypnotist working with weight loss clients for many years I do know how to help my weight loss clients remove the negative feelings that have been causing them to gain weight. I also thought that my clients' smoking success figures were way better than my weight loss clients' results and have constantly been improving my programs.

There has been little written about long term results so far. And we probably all know that once the client is released from our care, their success will be mainly dependent on their commitment to themselves to stay fit, trim and healthy. We supplied them with the tool, showed them they could use it correctly, showed them how to replace those bad feelings with better ones, and in most cases put some kind of automatic generator of good feelings in place. I too would like to see some long term follow up stats, so I have started to put something in place to get that.

I initiated an initial test trial with a small group of clients and have been tracking them through an installation of a virtual gastric band. I have been extremely excited by the results so far, and I am only halfway through the program. This program is not for sale, it's just a test I wanted to do. As I became more interested in this type of work, I also got hungry for more info, and wanted more training on this. I was contacted by one of the developers of a virtual gastric band program who was interested in helping other hypnotists learn how to do this process. I put together a teleseminar with her and posted it on hypnothoughts in the trainings section here: http://www.hypnothoughts.com/group/hypnosistrainings/forum/topics/v... It's free and you can listen to the entire interview.
Dear CindyLou

You have posed a very important question as in what are the long term results of hypno-band surgery?
I don't doubt hypno-band surgery works and is indeed a brilliant idea with respect to all whom practise it, but is it sustainable in the long-term?

I am currently treating a client whom actually had VGB surgery just over 5 years ago. From my understanding this is now a redundant practise and has been replaced by lap-band surgery. Over 10 months she quickly lost weight from just over 200 pounds and went down to 140 pounds. Regardless of the VGB she started re-gaining weight which has now stabalised over the last 4 years to around 168 pounds . She is 5ft 2 inches in height. Sorry about the measurements but I'm old-school and struggle with kg.

She is absolutely miserable with her weight gain. From research it appears that many people whom have actually had VGB or lap-band surgery in struggle to maintain minimal diets in the long term regardless of having a small stomach. What appears very clear is that it is critical to establish root causes to eating disorders which are often related to to addiction driven by underlying anxieties and other hidden agendas.

My client has an addiction to 'mints' of which she can easily eat up to 6 packs a day. She was not following a bariatric diet Now after 4 sessions she is successfully following and planning a bariatric diet. Her addiction to mints however has been a difficult one to break but is slowly being reduced. She is now gaining more confidence and there are signs of real progress. Part of my treatment plan as she already was on a minimum diet was to introduce the idea of 'exercise' as she could not be asked to reduce her food intake any further. Following our last session she excitedly informed me how she had just booked aqua-fit classes. We had been discussing over the weeks forms of exercise which she could safely carry out due to her condition.
A healthy way to lose weight and to maintain it over the long term is not just about reducing food intake, but to combine it with some form of exercise.

Hypno-Band surgery sounds like a great idea but how feasible is it over the long-term to maintain a minimum diet?
From my clients perspective it has been extrememly difficult to maintain as it seems for many whom have undergone VGB surgery.
Surely dealing with root causes and promoting a healthy life-style is the better way forward for long-term results rather than promoting the idea of a smaller stomach.

Hi Angela,
It was interesting to read about your client. Just to clear up a common misconception, the Hypno-Band process does indeed address the root causes of the clients weight issues by using a combination of CBT and Hypnotherapy. It would be pointless to do otherwise. We also advise on exercise and healthy eating as an all round long term weight loss method. Many people seem to assume that all we do is "fit" the Virtual Gastric Band and leave it at that. Not so, as you would have seen on my presentation at the last HypnoSummit. While many therapists have created their own versions of gastric band hypnotherapy, I can't comment on their methods. I can assure you that the Hypno-Band is designed specifically to deal with the issues you highlight.

By the way. Hypno-Band is not a generic term. It is an internationally registered trademark.

Dear John

It is with regret that I missed your talk on the HypnoSummit. I have only been a member on this site for a few days. I feel greatly relieved from your response that you appear to have all angles covered especially as far as promoting exercise as part of your program. It is a well known fact that crash dieting, and minimal diets do not work in the long term and must be backed up by a healthy exercise plan due to the plateauing effect of long-term reduced dieting on the body.

My client whom has deep regrets making the decision to have VGB surgery has suffered various complications and illnesses as a result of surgery. Her position is that will never be able to undergo a reversal of this surgery as it is deemed a highly dangerous procedure. Lap-band surgery seems to offer far more flexibility than VGB surgery but still carries the normal risks of undergoing any surgery and mild to severe complications following the weeks of surgery. Clearly one of the benefits of Hypno-Band is that those risks are removed.

With this in mind it would be great to see collaboration among all hypnotherapists practising Hypno-Band to monitor long-term effects over a 2 to 5 year period. I can only urge those practising this procedure to come together as a collective and devise a plan to for long-term monitoring. Positive results may save many from making choices to have surgery which that they may later regret, and the associated health risks. (Somehow I suspect you already have this in hand)

If long-term effects do prove successful it would also justify a proposal be put to the NHS to offer Hypno-Band as a first alternative rather than offer lap-band surgery. This would greatly reduce the pressures on the NHS system financially and doctors alike whom are faced with many sufferers of obesity demanding the surgery without fully understanding the implications and risks of their choice. It is one thing to ‘believe’ one can endure a life time on a radically reduced diet, it is indeed another to experience it because one is left with no choice plus the potential health risks. I know my client can vouch for that and I doubt she stands alone on this matter.

I wish you and all whom practise Hypno-Band every success in the long-term. I was unaware that you are the man whom devised this technique until today. Now I am aware so I can only applaud you on your creativity sir.

With Regards
Angela
