Hypnosis and Smart Recovery

I recently found a Web site devoted to the application of Albert Ellis' Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy. This site is run by a non-profit organization of volunteers, and the materials on it are absolutely free, although they do accept donations. Despite the fact that it is primarily designed for recovering addicts, it is, quite literally, a treasure-trove of resources (worksheets, handouts, lists of irrational beliefs and ways to challenge them, etc.) for combating depression, overcoming anxiety, avoiding procrastination, identifying goals, and showing anyone how to live a happy, healthy, and satisfying life. I have spent many pleasant intervals browsing this site, www.smartrecovery.org, and I sincerely recommend it to all.

At the site, move the mouse arrow over to the heading that says Resources, and you'll see a drop-down menu. Cick on Online Library, and another drop-down menu will appear. Then click on either Tools and Homework or Articles and Essays (you'll want to check out both of them) and scroll down their entire length for a list of articles and handouts.

Many people believe that any other technique (cognitive behavioral therapy, rational-emotive behavior therapy, and so on) is made more effective if it is used in combination with hypnosis. The essence of the site is finding new, more adaptive beliefs to put in place to guide one's life in place of the old, dysfunctional ones that we now use. The beauty of it is that this enables you to identify the beliefs that are standing in the way of each individual client, so that you know exactly which beliefs to work on with hypnosis, and which new beliefs to put in their place.

It'll take some browsing to find just the articles and worksheets that you like best, because there are so many to choose from, but, like a fine restaurant, it's well worth some return visits.

Yeah that's a good site Don, thanks for sharing.

For those who may be wondering about how REBT may be integrated with hypnosis or how they are similar there are a couple of Master's theses on this topic available from cognitive hypnotherapists in the UK who trained under Windy Dryden in REBT. Here is the link (both the Hypnosis and CBT; and Hypnosis and REBT links open a Master's thesis in Word):

Can I ask actually, in the UK cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy training for hypnotherapists with an evidence-based focus is becoming increasingly prevalent. How much has such training penetrated into the US training market either as an addition to, or replacement for, psychodynamic and Ericksonian models? How about other countries?

Hi. Glad you liked the site. Hypnosis training in colleges in the U.S., unfortunately, has lagged. Steven J. Lynn has a large and active hypnosis research group at the State University of New York at Binghamton, with grant funding and a steady stream of Master's and Ph.D. theses. He is one of the editors of the American Psychological Association's doorstop-size Handbook of Clinical Hypnosis, which came out in January of this year, in which Steve and I were the authors of the the chapter on induction techniques.

The International Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, I understand, has a three-year backlog. I finally decided to say the heck with it, and I'm publishing my papers along with other commentary on my blog, www.hyperempiria.com.

A must read book for people who take the subject seriously I think. I hope it gives you satisfaction having contributed to such a wonderful book.

Hi Don,

Thank you for the information and website. You are very right to say that we can combine other therapies to get some great results. I do use different counselling skills in my initial consultation and while I am working with my clients. I have dealt with few ex-addicts who benefited with CBT + NLP + hypnosis combined together. I benefited from reading the general literature and this website has given me a different and very interesting view.

Hypnothoughts is a great invention, as is the Internet itself. Why wait for years for something to appear in print that people have to purchase in a bookstore or read in a library when anyone with a computer can have access to a Web site or a blog posting almost immediately? I'm sure that this will lead to even more rapid advances in hypnosis!
