Hello, my mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1988 and has not found any medicine that helps. She was on interferon injections, but they made her very sick. I was wondering if anyone has had success using hypnosis to treat ms, the disease or the symptoms? I've heard that very deep states of hypnosis(coma like) are conductive to impressive healing states. Any patter, links, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

-Thank you very much

I have a client that was diagnosed with MS and found out it was Epstein Bar instead... which has the same slight symptoms..Make sure she has the right diagnose...I have been working with my client for weight loss and I give her positive and confident affirmations for her health and well being and that has helped her in many ways. Even thou she has some negative thoughts they are changing with each session.
I have had several clients over the years with MS - 3 right now. I approach it from an autoimmune dis-ease and draw from Parkhill's Answer Cancer, Melissa Roth, Michael Ellner, Alan Barski, Roy Hunter (Parts Therapy) and others. I take two prong approach - one going for root cause and the other of getting the unconscious mind to work with and heal the cells and tissues rather than attacking them.
I can't say that anyone is "cured" but I have seen people get back out of their wheel chair and be active in life and others who are reporting no symptoms.
Jeremy,
I recommend that you attend my talk at the Global Hypnosis Summit on Immune Disorders for a generalized strategy and specific factors in the management of MS and other immunity related conditions. I also have a case video on the subject that will be available at my booth. I say this not to promote myself and my product, but because these tools have been very helpful for others.

For direct help now, consider that your mother has lived with this condition for over twenty years. During this period of time it is likely she has been through many bouts and recoveries. The chronic nature of the condition suggest changes over time and it is both of these dynamics, changes and time, that we as hypnotherapists are uniquely qualified to facilitate.

When you say that she has not found any medicine that helps, I read that she is suffering from vexing symptoms. The relief of suffering should be our first objective in any healing intervention. Common symptoms of MS are fatigue and weakness. These are best addressed through strength metaphors, such as Superman, Popeye, Godzilla, etc. She will inform you of her strength models through inquiry. Induce hypnosis and allow her an experience in her strength mode, then bridge that strength into her waking state, perhaps even through waking hypnosis.

It is essential that individuals with such conditions have tools that they can actively utilize. I train my clients in waking self-hypnosis methods to take command of their physical and emotional well-being. These methods include discharge, retrieval, and metaphor models. In our work it is common for clients to also be in pharmacotherapy with its own vexing impact and we can further empower them through tools to offset this impact. I recommend the use of faucets and therapeutic color breathing, as they can easily become automatic.

MS is a curious condition in which the immune system attacks the myelin which arises from immune cells itself. Current research suggests both diminished and over-activated immune responses. For this I concur that deep trance with an immunity reset is critical. I agree with the other posters that there are frequently trauma dynamics either on the front side or back side of the condition and these must be resolved.

I also cannot speak more highly of the importance of body-mind interventions in mind-body complaints. For years I have combined Reiki and Hypnosis and now call this synthesis Hands-On Hypnosis, to which I have incorporated acupuncture references. Perhaps the strongest for this condition is Stomach 36, just below the outer front of the knee. This point is regarded by East-West acupuncturists as powerful for the immune system and its Chinese name translates to "walk three miles". By utilizing these body to mind contact methods we help to anchor the mind to the body itself, thus reinforcing ideas into their physicality.

I would also recommend the Coue Method of repeating the affirmation "Every day in every way I am better and better" while holding each bead in a strand of twenty. It is a curiously potent method, particularly for such a complaint.

Hypnotherapy is one of the most beneficial interventions for your mother and she is fortunate to have a son who can help her. Be confident and you will do good work. If you would like help with specific symptoms, please post them for more ideas from me and others.

Keep up the good work,
Timothy
I would just like to thank everyone who has taken the time to answer my questions. Can anyone suggest a book or patter that has already been written for this purpose, or is this something I will need to write myself? Thanks again....
Hi Jeremy

Just to add to all the excellent advice that others have already given, I am working with several clients with MS currently and I have found that with all of them using a process of releasing past SEEs that may have contributed in some way has been enormously useful. There are some wonderful videos of Stephen Brookes and Ernest Rossi using a similar process to help a patient with AIDS increase T-Cell count on the BHR website. You might find it useful to look there. With very best wishes for your mother's improving health and well-being, Sophie
