Hi all,

This is a question where I am stymied! A potential client called who wants help with very troubling dreams related to past experiences. The client would like to work directly on the dreams - as well as the emotions that accompany them upon waking. Obviously, working to defuse the impact of the past experiences may also help decrease the frequency and impact of the dreams, but my question is, are there techniques that hypnotists can use to work directly on the content and impact of dream states?

The person has had therapy in the past, and may need to go back as well.

Any suggestions and comments you have will be invaluable! Thanks so much!

Fabulous! The Jabberwocky is a rich source of metaphorical tricks...

Amy,

I was trained in Gestalt dreamwork by Randal Churchill. He is an expert on dreams and his book, Become the Dream, is fascinating. I could hardly put it down. It will add to the great advice you've already received.

Katherine

Amy, I like Michael's 30-day ritual suggestion, as well as the lucid dreaming ideas (particularly the Vorpal sword). I once came over with a can of air freshener labeled "Monster-B-Gone" for a friend's kid with night terrors.... the only thing I would add is a way to listen to the message of the dream, if there is one. I believe that we have feelings for a reason - just as pain is often a signal that something is wrong.

Although often nightmares and phobias are just misaligned cues, sometimes things get worse because our subconscious mind will keep repeating the message until we get the point.

So in hypnosis, giving suggestions for a soothing ritual and for getting the sword and/or control of the dream, I would add some suggesiton that IF the dream has a useful message, the client's subconscious mind will find a better way to bring that message to the conscious attention. And sometime during the day, perhaps in the morning upon waking or perhaps at night when doing the bedtime ritual, some time during the next 30 days the message, memory or insight will become obvious. And then the dream, having delivered its message, can become something altogether new.

let us know how you proceed and how things go.... this is an interesting conversation.

cheers, Stephanie

Thanks Katherine and Stephanie! Great to have all this help. Thanks so much!

Just one thing - the air freshener - those are neurotoxic. These substances don't belong around kids or anyone with asthma, in particular. Published studies in Archives of Environmental Health show how bad these chemicals can be. Better to use a spray bottle with "magic water" or something.

If you've read Monsters and Magic Sticks, you may recall that the title comes from the story of a hypnotist whose son was suffering from nightmares and was convinced there were monsters in the closet. Rather than try to talk the child out of his beliefs, the hypnotist took his son to the hardware store to buy materials to make a monster-banishing wand. The two of them worked hard on it, and the hypnotist taught his son how to use it to banish nightmares. After a few nights, the boy was sleeping fine, and the wand was long forgotten.
