I want to know how many of you work as hypnotherapists in hospitals. I get notes from hypnotherapists who are working in hospitals or in wellness centers, etc that are run by or attached to a hospital but I don't know where most of you are working. I am particularly interested if you are in a general medical/surgical hospital or in a specialty hospital such as rehab or psychiatric. How many beds? Are you seeing in-patients or out-patients or both? Who pays you? Are you considered a staff employee or an independent contractor? Are you calling what you do "hypnosis" or some other name, such as "relaxation therapy" or "guided meditation"?

Hi Mellisa,

I work at Northridge Hospital, In the family medical center, I work as an independent contractor, I get paid directly, abut I have an arrangement as how much I make and how do I charge their patient.

Most of my clients are out-patients, or I am hired to go to them privately.

I am called a Hypnotherapist, and when I am in a session, their is a note on my door that says, SHHHH Hypnotherapist in Session... ( PS: It is very slow even when working directly with doctors, clients don't want to pay, they want to be covered via Insurance, even though their doctor proscribes them, Hypnosis for stress reduction and relaxation)

I write articles about hypnosis that comes out monthly to get patience familiar with hypnosis, It also says at the front desk and almost in each exam room, here we offer Hypnotherapy and it says for what.

Hope that helps...

Hello Mellisa,

The last time I worked in a hospital was now several years ago.

when for a couple of years I ran a weekly 'Support Group'
for the Occupational Therapy Team,
in the city's main psychaitric unit.

I did very little hypnotherapy,
it was mainly groupwork,
teambuilding, trust building,
gestalt exersices, relaxation, guided meditations
music and art therapy, etc.
and facilitating a supportive atmosphere,
to help the threrapists better cope with their workload.
I had a fairly free ranging brief.

I was hired directly by the OT department,
paid out of their budget, as an independant contracter.
but the cheques came from the local health authority.

I did as a result of that, eventually see many of the OT team members,
their firends and relatives.
as private clients, for a number of different reasons.

Love and hugs,

Fable

Hi Melissa
I interviewed Judith Prager a while back (second one down) who spoke at the first GHS and has done some amazing work in emergency hypnosis.

She does a lot of work in hospitals which she discusses on the interview, but usually couched in terms of 'guided meditation' rather than hypnosis.

Cheers
Nathan

Here's the direct download link to the interview, to make it easier to find:

Hello Doreen. I have a question for you, if you don't mind. I was wondering what your experience has been in building relationships with doctors, and what advice you might have as to how one would go about that approach ? ~ Thanks , Steve

Hi Steve,

I don't have a medical background via degrees, but I have a lot of medical knowledge by attending the doctors workshops, where I have been Invited to attend, so it helps me to be Involved, and It has a lot to do with my car accident in 1999 where l had lots of pain and was paralyzed from walking or doing much of anything...and going from one doctor to another, and seen by many doctors, it helped me to learn and to know more about injury's, illness, depression and pain management, so I guess what I am saying is, that my relationship started before hypnosis and before I became an energy healer.

The doctors I am working with are the same doctors who use to tell me that i was spoiled and that nothing was wrong with me until they finally agreed to do an MRI, finding out that I was not spoiled after all...

And still getting to work with the doctors, wasn't easy, it took me almost six years to get in, and thanks to Scott Sandland It made it easy, because I tolled the doctors that I know a nice guy that works with doctors, and if they have any questions, they can contact him, they didn't contact him, but they agreed to have me twice a week working in their office, where before they use to send out their patient to me, and even then it wasn't enough, trust me, It is still the same, but I save money from renting an expensive office...

I also added them on my liability Insurance coverage, otherwise they wouldn't allowed me to work their..

Right now, I am working my way up, so I can get more hypnotherapist to work with medical office and hospitals directly, and I am planing to do a training where I am going to teach some medical background with other doctors involved, trust me I am working on it, and It's not an easy thing to do, there are too many rules and laws, but when me and the doctor figured out how to do it, I will help you all to make it an easy entrance for all hypnotherapist.

I also work for the Victims program and the Jewish Vocational services as a mentor, actually the JVS is something new, I started on Nov 23, 2009, and It's a nine month program, and this Monday I am giving a lecture with a short workshop to a group of 20 Women In how to Set Goals, and I am excited.

As to my experience with building relationships with doctors, it's not easy, but it is respectful, some are open to hypnosis, they also use me for personal Issues, they do refer me heir staff members, and where ever they go, they talk about how their patient come in doing not so well, and leaving so happy and relaxed, and I even get referral from the ER.

Basically my advice for now, is to get in touch with your family doctor, do it during your regular visit, give him some business cards, and find out how they feel about hypnosis, If they are open minded, then ask for referrals, If they are not, educate them, and Steve, before you know it, out of the blue, you will get a call that says Dr. so and so sent you a client.

Also, don't worry being perfect, do your work and let the doctor tell you how impressed he was with what you did to his patient, basically If you get one client a year, don't be discouraged, and see it as a good sign.

This days, I go to all training they recommend me to go, It is very helpful for me and for my clients as well, since I get to educate them about their illness.

Oh and clients call me Doctor, and I always correct them, No, Not a doctor, I am a certified Hypnotherapist.

Also sense of humor can help them remember you better, they just love me :)

I hope that helps....

Doreen, do you work in the hospital or in a doctor's private practice? Do you see in-patients in the hospital?

Thanks Fable, but I am looking for hypnotherapists who are currently working in a hospital as a hypnotherapist, seeing in-patients. Specifically, I am looking for people who are working as a hypnotherapist with the full knowledge and consent of the hospital administration, not someone who is working as a nurse or therapist and who helps patients with hypnosis occasionally or someone who works in a physician's office. I have trained dozens of people to do this over the past few years. I hear from them sporadically and they have told me they have gone to work in hospitals. But, now that I need statistics for a project I can't remember who they are. I also hear from others than those I have personally trained. I was hoping to find some of those people to answer a few questions for a project I'm working on. So, I specifically need hypnotherapists who are currently working in hospitals as hypnotherapists on a routine basis.

Mellisa It is not in a the hospital, It is in a medical center part of the hospital, some doctors have their patients in the hospital and they work at the hospital, but not me. I see patients in the medical center and at the hospital, but the one in the hospital is not a regular thing, I see clients only when I am hired by the family, I also work at the medical center twice a week , based on clients, sometimes I have none..

Thanks Doreen , for such a great response. It's always good to correspond with you.

I remember going to workshops with a lot of psycho-analysts. The last one that I went to was for facilitating ( M.B.S.R. ) ~ Mindful Based Stress Reduction, which is a Vipassana based meditation practice that was developed back east in Mass. , by Dr. Zinn .

The class was held at L.M.U. here by Marina Del Rey , by Trudy Goodman , and the jist of it was using a breathing exercise, to draw ones attention away from the mind , and to consentrate on the body.

I have had only good things to ay about it, so I'l just end with that for now. ~ Peace
