No, that's not true.

I think in some States in the US you have to trained before you can be an anything-therapist, but there's nothing to stop you becoming The Hypnotist.
It isn't true. It's a different discipline. You can be a hypnotherapist, and that's all. I am a Hypnotherapist, and have no training as a psychologist.
There is certainly a large school of psychologists who would like you to believe that you have to be one of them before you can do hypnosis. But it's nonsense. Most psychologists know very little about hypnosis, and the ones who do study it often operate from somewhat dubious premises.

Check your local state laws, though, about the term "hypnotherapist." Where I live, for instance, it's not entirely legal for me to use that term because I'm not a licensed health care worker--not that the police are very concerned with enforcing that.

In some countries it is customary to have a degree in psychoanalysis, to get insurance-coverage, but hypnotherapist still is a "free-profession", meaning that you don't have to have a degree, to call yourself one.
I do suggest however, to do a good study in the direction of hypnotherapy, because it will give you a firm grasp on what you can expect and an opportunity to network with colleagues.
Kevin, it depends on the state. Here in New Jersey you cannot call yourself a "hypnotherapist"or provide "hypnotherapy" unless otherwise licensed as health-care provider (medicine, psychology, social work, etc) however the title hypnotist is not restricted in any way. Your state of West Virginia may have different standards regarding the terms "hypnotherapy" or "hypnotherapist" however I am not aware of any US state that places restrictions on the "hypnotist" title. The National Guild of Hypnotists (http://www.ngh.net) provides state specific info. Best wishes, Jim
thanks everyone that was very helpful
