I really need some advice here, OK, my hosting company Ignores me, and I cannot save my website, I have signed up with another hosting company, but I have no Idea how to get my old web-pages information, so I can transfer the information to the new hosting company.

I have paid a lot of money to have this web-side and now POOF, It's all gone, I have also lost all my contacts, I am sad, and disappointed, I am outraged, I have been having problem with my hosting company for over a year now, and now that I got a new hosting company, I have nothing to transfer, and I have lost most pictures that I have paid a designer to do for me, I may have some but not all :(.

Any ways, a friend tolled me how to locate my website pages, but It wont let me copy my pages, I think it has a security code and I have no Idea how to do copy my information, I have Invested six years on my website, and now I am hoping to have someone directing me in saving what ever I can, so I can start all over.

Any advice will be appreciated, I really need help... Thanks Doreen Cohanim C.Ht

Doreen, I'm sorry to hear that.

I don't know how much this could help, but there are some archives left here:

Copy paste the above line into your browser.

Again, I'm sorry for the loss.

Who is your hosting company? I want to make sure I never use them.
Doreen, did the hosting company also design the website for you? If not, check with your web designer to see if he/she has archive copies of the files. I keep archives of every document and file I create for my clients.

And if you have a contract with the hosting company, and they're not living up to their obligations, it might be worth hiring a lawyer to send them a letter encouraging them to do the right thing.

However, you may need to read the hosting agreement (and the design agreement, if that's a separate company) to find out what you've agreed to. I've had several clients discover that they don't actually own their website designs or HTML--because they didn't specify that it was created as "work for hire" and the designer kept the copyright. Then they have to hire me to create a new site from scratch. (While that's good for my business, it sucks for the client.)

Doreen...I am so sorry to hear of your experience. I have always maintained control of my sites for this very reason. I don't know how to help, but I do want to offer support and encouragement. Many blessings...Zoilita www.zoilitagrant.net

I had a similar problem with a host who got mad i was moving my site and locked me out of my site. I'll ask my webmaster the site he used. There's some kind of archives of webpages system, though it's not super organized and you can'tget everything.

I, myself, have to request a copy of all my website files. I had forgotten to do that ....again. You don't realize how much you have in a website until it's lost.

Where is your host company located? Is there a disagreement between the two of you? Your website was very nice, I remember. It's too bad. Did you ever run out any hard copies of anything on your site that has a copy of the design that you might have tucked away?

Maybe we should start a business giving website owners an additional place to park a website as a backup? Actually, I think there are companies like that and that they are reasonable.

I created my new website on a wordpress platform so that I can make my own edits and I have access to it.

I'm really sorry you're going through that. Do you have an attorney in your family who might be able to mediate? Sometimes I find that that helps.

Aw, Doreen...that is just rotten news. It sounds like a bit of work ahead of you. Maybe you can barter some hypno with a student who doesn't mind re-typing some of your content. Just imagine how great your NEW site will be as it will reflect all of the positive changes in you of the last year!!
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help...

Best wishes,

Kelley
Doreen More to the point... Do you own your domain or did the hosting company get it for you. If you own the domain you can start over with it .... and people can still find you. If you don't then it is really problamatic. You should always back up your web files on a machine you can touch. That way if you are hacked you can be back in business quickly.
Kathleen's advice is very good and I an hoping you have the files at an independant designer. Let me also say that if you have to start over use a reliable web host like Bluehost. (Craig Eubank's recomendation) and commit to a web 2.0 format like wordpress or Joomla so that you can easily make your own changes and be independant of a web master.

Doreen,

If you Google your site and then click onto the "cached" version, you can then select the "text version" and copy and paste from there. At least you will recover your text that way and ignore my suggestion about re-typing!
Doreen,
If you can tell me how to view your site, I can probably recover it for you. Contact me privately.
As I said in my HypnoSummit presentation, I LOVE Wordpress and I recommend it to virtually all of my clients. It has evolved into a very powerful platform, and as Susan says, it puts you in total control of your site.

And though most people think of Wordpress as a blogging platform, you can do just about anything with it. I use it to create landing pages, squeeze pages, websites, online shops, membership sites, you name it. It's extremely flexible. And there are thousands and thousands of developers out there, constantly creating new plugins.

Speaking of which, one of the things I love about Wordpress is the automated backup plugin BackUpWordPress. Once a day, it automatically backs up my Wordpress databases and emails me a copy. I already have multiple backups of my images, etc. thanks to Time Machine on the Mac. I also use an automated off-site backup service.

As for hosting, I use Doteasy.com to host my sites--it's kind of like web hosting for dummies--and I'm very happy with them. They have very friendly and patient customer service and tech support people and a very easy-to-use control panel. It's probably not for power users, but for 99% of my clients it works great. (They also have a free hosting option that is good for simple websites, but you need a paid hosting plan to host a Wordpress installation.)
