I just got a call from someone who talked like tweet bird.

I am thinking of suggestions to grow up is ok (Elman),

Change submodalities of feelings associated with speech impediment,

Increase awareness of parts of body and how they are used in producing speech.

Practice years of speaking correctly (time distortion)

Deep Trance Identification of a known, skilled orator (Cunningham)

This is just the 1st session.

Any other suggestions?

Vince, does this person have a fear of cats too? Seriously, its hard to say what might be effective until you do a full interview. I would be curious about (in no particular order)

a) client's age

b) what is the motivation to change?

c) what has he/she tried so far?

d) did he/she speak like a normal fashion and then revert to childlike speech or has this been the pattern all along? I would be a bit concerned in with the former scenario.

Curious to how this works out for you. Good Luck! Jim

P.S If you share any identifying data, be sure to move this discussion to the "safe place" on this forum.

Vince, if the case is "yes" in response to James' "d)" question, some parts work may be in order...

What James and Kelley said.

I highly recommend trusting that you have every tool/technique that you will need when it is called for and meet the client before deciding on how to proceed--

Warmest regards,

Michael E. in sweltering NYC

Jim,

Tweety bird was totally not afraid of cats! If this client is, then it would make it very interesting.

Client is coming in for a mundane issue with no mention of "tweety" talk.  Since I have the "hood" up might as well fix that too.  I'd be using 2-level communication on this one fer sure.

Kelley,

if this was a reversion to tweety speech maybe regression (if I were a regressionist, shhh dun tell Michael)

Michael,

Good advice

How about a reframe? Get them a job in the voice over department at Warner Bros?
Uh-oh...unless the client requests a revision, I'd leave the idiosyncratic speech alone! Besides, some of us find unusual voices and speech patterns rather alluring.

Hey Vinney from NYC-- Kelley is right on...

Please -- Stop it!  It is unethical to decide to "FIX" a client issue or speech pattern without being asked/authorized to fix it --

I think if you can see the mundane issue as the most important thing in the here and now……..maybe in the future, if the speech is as issue with the client, because you dealt with the mundane issue with passion and respect, you will probably be the one they come to with the next thing they want for their well being.

I agree with Kelly and Michael, excellent advice. And if the speech becomes an issue they want addressed, James has a good direction.

I guess I do "unethical" things sometimes.  Not my first nor my last.

Few years ago, I had an obnoxious, overbearing mom drag in her daughter for a "normal" smoking cessation.  I noticed she had cuts on her wrists.  When I asked her what the purpose of making her smoke she replied to cope feeling of X

Affect bridge feeling X and immediately goes to a minor camping disaster in girl scout.   Earlier ISE goes to molestation at age 6.

Took care of feeling X in past.

Took care of feeling X in present

Took care of feeling X in future.

Did not attempt to take away "copiing mechanism" of smoking.

Gave her some positive resource states.

Mom demanded refund because her daughter was still smoking.  No problem, I refund less than 1% of sessions.

99% of my fibro people came to me for weight.  I bet they can lose some weight with less pain now (thanks to my using Melissa Roth's protocol).

I did helped a widow beat insomnia by helpng her get remarried (Marriage and Family counseling?)

In some people's minds (maybe many people) I did (do) an unethical thing(s).  But I'm ok with it and that is what really counts in my book.

Mel Blanc could do thousands of voices and she ain't no Mel Blanc.

The quotation marks -- don't change the facts -- Deciding what's best for clients and not concerning yourself with what they are paying for gives all of us a black eye.

Good bye and good luck --
